Prediction: which watches will be highly collectible in the future?

I believe value retention has a lot to do with the brand's marketing strategy. Take all the famous vintages like Rolex, Seiko, PP etc - the perceived value is primarily due to the efforts of the respective brand to sustain their franchise value.

Case in point is Pagol. Excellently designed and made that many of its models continue to still work today despite the fact that the brand/company died decades ago. Unfortunately, since no one is flying the flag, interest in the brand only evolves around a few watch enthusiasts with directly affects the price.

The watch design itself is equally important. If designed for a finite lifespan such as using plastics or resins then the likelihood of value creation is smaller if compared to watches designed to last forever.

Anyway back to the topic. I don't think Rolex watches in itself are collectable, save some. Rolex watches maintains its value better as compared to other brands. But within Rolex itself, there are models that are collectable, 5512, 5514, 5517, 1675, 16550 are some of the models that to me are collectable. But like most vintage Rolex, you got to pay to play....

Many people view it as the monetary value retention.

But I tend to look at its intrinsic value other that pure money factor such as rare art deco, precision and technology advancement...etc.

No matter how , a certain level of durability is a must.

I can't imagine if a super brand old watch with oxidized hands with ugly discolored dial till its watch brand logo and wording are unrecognizable and beyond repair. But people still continue chasing it and say it's so beautiful.

Sorry, no offense. I personally think it is "The Emperor's New Clothes".

Unless that old watch has a special sentiment value, then it would be the exception.

"highly collectible" if you are to refer to to retain value in future, then I would say is PP, Rolex and Panerai basic and Ltd edition model.

For me here are my list narrowed down from the year 2000's onwards (also not including limited editions):

Patek 5070
Patek 5970
Patek 5131

Those above are really solid but very expensive.

For cheaper alternatives:

Patek 5711 blue dial stainless steel version
Patek aquanaut 5167 stainless steel version

ok others, I been monitoring AP's all of these pieces gone up a lot in price over the years, I think who bought at retail early (like 5+ years ago), the 3 AP pieces below all earn money.

AP 15305 stainless steel - I have seen this rocket in price. Had a chance to buy this around 35k AUD before.
AP 15202 stainless steel - same rocket in price.
AP 15300 stainless steel blue dial - also rocket in price.

ok for PAM am not an expert here but if I were to buy I would go for a 000 base.

For Rolex:

zenith Daytona's have potential
sub kermit also good but need careful cause a lot of swap parts going on to create the franken Kermit.
pepsi GMT also quite good

I think newer ceramic pieces will just find a base second hand value and will be holding that value index to inflation/retail price increase.

it used to be the collectible ones werent thought of as collectible back then, but rather the fugly ones no one wanted.

and buying a watch just based on value retention is kinda stupid.

Theseiri, ...... 5970 & 5711 are easily attainable, the former ain't practical, the latter suit any occassion. 5070 is rare & far between. 5131 is not value for money. 5167 is just an ugly mole.

Well, I guess is Nokia handphone with clock inside..  haha.. just kidding but if u have a nokia handphone, keep it nicely.

For future resale value watches, I think mostly all should agree is Rolex. They are not the most expensive watches around but a lot still could afford for it.

I suppose highly collectables means high appreciative monetary value.
If that were to be the case than....all those limited editions Pateks,AP,Panerai.
But if highly collectables for the enthusiastic I would say casio or swatch

To really maintain value, the watch you buy must be kept Prestine in its box with the plastic wrap still on. It can't be worn but just admired from far.

This is the SOP by some watch collecting consortium when buying unique watches for investing purposes.

For hobbyists like us, I don't think we can be this disciplined.

I would rather buy the watch magazine to admire the watch up close!
