New Seiko Sumo (SBDC031) Cant change date
« on: August 26, 2016, 08:47:17 AM »
hi all, .. so i've just bought a seiko sumo ( sbdc031)  roughly a week or 2 ago.
I've only wore it like less than 5 times. So, recently i was checking the watch,  trying to turn the crown to set the date and time.
And then only i found out , i couldnt change the Date , at all . I've never change the date before since i bought from the shop. ( And i cant recall whether the salesman actually wind and changes the date for me when i bought it in the shop, or he changes the time to change the date). Normally, i'll just wind and change the hour/time until the date changes to the next day. (because its normally 1 day apart from the real date , cause i seldom wear it . Not my daily watch.). And only yesterday, i've attempted to change the date directly, since the watch date and the real date is few days apart, and then only i realized the date wouldnt move .

My procedure , to change the date :
Crown position:
0 - unscrew the crown
1 - pull out once ( 1 click ) date changing
2 - pull out twice ( 2 clicks ) hour/hand changing

I first unscrew the crown ,  pull it to 2 , and changes the hour so that its after 3am . I parked the hour hands at 6am.
I push the crown in , and the time resumes. And then i pull to position 1 ( 1click ), and try to change the date ( turn clockwise ).
The date wouldnt move....

The date only changes , if i were to wind the hour pass 12midnight . After 10pm it started to move, and by 12am it completed the date change.

I'll be bringing back the watch to midvalley to have them check.

So my question now is , what are the possible options i can request from the shop ?
1) Do they allow a 1-1 exchange ? Since the watch is still very brand new, and only like 10~12 days since i bought it from the shop
2) If they offer to claim under warranty, is there any risk involve? ( long waiting time , possible scratches due to repair? )
3) I'm guessing this should be a defect on the watch ?

First time buying a mechanical watch, i guess maybe is a mistake onmy part, of not checking the watch whether it can change the date before leaving the shop ... sigh =(

Hi bro,

If you did read the user manual that comes with the SBDC031, which has a 6R15 movement.

You will notice that to change the date:

1) Pull the crown out to 1st click.

2) Turn the crown COUNTER-CLOCKWISE to change the date.

From your post, it seems that you were turning the crown the wrong direction.

Try it out and update us.

No damage is done when turning clockwise, as the gears will disengage when turning it clockwise.

Just a note of advice, set the time at 9am, then change the date. Better this way.

Counter-clockwise for date, and do practice Jeep's advice to ensure that you don't get caught changing dates during the pantang times.

Glad to hear that everything's fine. Congrats on your purchase btw.

Its ok, we all make mistakes from time to time. Further, each movement has its own way of operations.

You're welcome.
