my companion to the shang hai expo
« on: October 31, 2010, 10:31:39 AM »
Last minute before the Shang Hai Expo closing, my boss asked me to go and visit with his son & daughter. Since this is an official trip, I cant bring my wife…. So hv to bring my second wife! My watch!
Guess who is the lucky one? i’m not choosing it blindly….. below is the criteria

1.   Since shang hai same time zone with us in Malaysia, so no need gmt function
2.   Comfort throughout the journey
3.   Weather forecast raining, so water resistant + non leather strap
4.   No official meeting, rubber strap is ok
So I chose my Ball engineer hydrocarbon TMT, it not only fit the above… but also good for night reading & the thermometer can tell the sudden drop of temperature which weather forecast indicated this will happen!

Here we go, this is the hotel my boss friend booked for us in Shang hai

Hotel ticket

Room

No complaint, quite convenient, train station within walking distance… a lot of shopping centre nearby as well!

Day 1 after lunch, we already can’t wait to go into expo, through train, we go into the gate 2, its Sunday, huge number of visitor…. Around 1 mil. If not mistaken, 1st time experience a zig zag q like that….. took about 20 mins, we r in, here’s the view from the purpose built passage

The china oil pavilion

The night view

Some others pavilion

Spotted A vintage fine Russia table clock in the civilization them pavilion

After quick dinner we moved to the shopping area by train

He is excited seeing the neon lights

Brought him to see these

Nothing worth buying…. Because there r Taxes on luxury item in china

More night shots there

Day 2
Start with some salty soya milk

It serve no purpose without this

Then we take train to go into expo again, Monday less ppl… hurray!

Asia countries zone

China with its 2 specials

The big china pavilion, the waiting number is gone in the 4am, so we can only admire from far

But we r lucky to get the waiting ticket for Macau pavilion

Then we walk to check out the most expensive pavilion…. The Saudi arab pavilion, look at the q…. 9 hours q time

Just can see from far

The korea

Kazakhstan

Japan

Uae

Taiwan

All these above big big one… q time is bout 4 hours… so I only manage to visit a few small small pavilion like Pakistan, Nepal…..

Temperature check….. 20 degree

Never mind, treat myself some good food for lunch
The ‘bao jiong ngao yuen’

Its really juicy inside

The crab powder ‘tang bao’

Climate change, dark falling… we move to Europe zone

Temperature drop suddenly…. Freezing…

Thermo shown 15 degree on my wrist… I believe if I take off my wrist… it will be around 13-14degree
Didn’t mange to get into those big countries…. Average for germany, Switzerland, England… q time is about 2-4 hours…

So I went into those smaller pavilions like
Monaco

Serbia

Denmark

Luxemburg, Latvia, netherland.....

The night fall….

The one with money decided to go for dinner at, ‘xin tian di’

We get into a very famous shang hai dish restaurant…
The red dates with glutinous rice, not so sweet…. I like it!

The ‘grandma hong sao rou’… if u can eat fat meat, this is good! I particularly like the fu cuk that braised together with this fat meat…

The crab yellow tofu… this is too good….

Fried ‘bai he’ n zuk sheng

After dinner, all shops already closed

Got to fight for taxi here to go back to hotel…. Plenty of illegal 1, but we dare not got into those

Day 3
After breakfast in a modern café along the way to train station, we go into expo around 930am

Sunny day

We went 1st to south east asia zone…. Visited the expected pasar malam Malaysia pavilion, Cambodia…. Then we q for new Zealand instead od longer q australia pavilion…

After that We visited alot of small Europe countries pavilion again

We move on to AMERICA zone…  as expected, long q at USA, so I go into Canada, Columbia, argentina….. + south Africa at the back…. Skip mexico,
brazil…. N chile

Lunch, others got into burger king because that’s the only restorant no need to q… since I hate fast food, so I went to buy this Tunisia short rice cook with their spices n its fried chicken wing

After lunch, ppl push me back to the old town since they knew I never been there. The famous tourist spot, cheng huang temple

Plenty of street food here…

But I didn’t buy any… was thinking to buy the famous nan siang bao…. But the q is very long n I’m running out of time…. Only manage to try the red dates milk tea…. N buy some packed food from this so called 100 yrs old shop… damn expensive

Then for dinner, we were treated by our boss old friend in a local like shang hai restaurant… Hai Sang Ah Su if not mistaken… they ordered us a lot of local delights + rice wine… forget to take photo of the cold &  dishes like cold fish, fried pigeon, sue chye….
Here are the main dishes

Shanghai famous crystal prawn…  no taste, but crispy, serve with vinegar… not what I like… dare imagine how they make it

Shanghai famous hong sao meat, not so fat, not so sweet…. This is a must try dish in shang hai

Typical shang hai dish as well, chewy tofu skin with Chinese ham…

Restaurant Signature braised ribs with pine seed… if u like big grilled rips… this is a Chinese version!

Fried crab with pepper n salt…. Good for serving with some beer

Steam duo bao fish, I ate this once in kajang 7 yrs ago… this is good, sweet, crunchy….

Dessert (wine glutinous ball) ‘jiu niang wan zhi’ I love this…. If I’m not as full… I would hv eaten 3 bowls!

After the dinner, we walk to shopping centre near hotel (tian yin qiao road)

A lot of branded things…. I only bought this at the road side fruit store when we walk back. The Fresh dates which we cant find it in malaysia

Last day, again we walk to another nearby shopping centres before we catch the flight… after some discussion, we decided to try the floating train

The only thing I bought to for myself for this trip is this…. The 3 in 1 magazine

Chris, thx for sharing. U make me miss for holidays trips again.

Did u take these photos with ur S90? Nice ! But I also can tell that u stitched some of the wide angle shots instead of the "sweep panorama". I doubt the S90 has this feature.

Sweep panorama feature is important when having sight-seeing trips. Sony & Fujifilm cameras has this wondeful feature. Not sure about the Lumix Lx5. Mmm... must find out before buying it. :Praying:

Wow, great post Chris.
With this kind of report there's no need to visit the Expo in person.
I was actually hoping that you could verify the reports of leak in the Malaysian Pavillion. I guess you did not make it there.

Chris, if the M'sian Pavillion is as bad as you described then I'm not sure if we want to be associated with it.

As a Malaysian I do not like to see that pasar malam in the Pavillion but the Chinese may happy with it
n the Minangkabau building design still unique n better than the Cambodia, Indonesia, Brunei....
Just that as a Malaysian we thought it is not creative enough!

No heavy rain...
But was told the building almost can finish in time, it's not feature in the earlier print out..,
So I'm not surprise if there are leakages from roof, the roof was not constructed with conventional material anyway!
