automatic watches and changing the date !!
« on: August 16, 2016, 06:17:06 AM »
i just like to ask what is the SOP if an automatic watch stopped because i didnt use it for a period of time, do i have to wind it first then change the time/date or change the time/date then just wear it again? also, i read that you cant change the date of the watch if the hands are in the 9 o clock to 2 o clock position.

You need to wind the automatic watches before wearing. It is good practice if u don't change the date  from 9 pm to 3am although u can do it on some watches.

I was told itz better to set the time to 6.30 then only wind the watch so that less "harmful" to the watch.
Is that true?

Here are some excerpts of a Grand Seiko manual as well as a Ball watch manual on the dangers of adjusting date function when the time on the said watch is within a certain time period. As for winding the watch, there should not be any problem winding it any time.

Oh crap i did just that. At 12.30am last night i noticed that the day wheel was hanging halfway when i expected it shouldve just clicked into the next day, so i went and adjusted it.

Hope i didnt spoil anything inside. Will keep in mind to only adjust the next morning

In the condition where the watch has fully unwound and time has stopped, my usual practice in adjusting time/date is to run the time through the next 12 oclock to see if the date changes, this allows me to then set the correct time according to AM/PM, then only I would set the correct date.
