Shipping watches to Langkawi?
« on: July 27, 2016, 01:26:21 PM »
Hi guys,

Have anyone tried shipping your expensive purchases (watches) to a Langkawi hotel?
Can we skip GST by doing so?

Theoretically possible since Langkawi has tax free status

from http://gst.customs.gov.my/en/rg/SiteAssets/specific_guides_pdf/Import.pdf:

"If goods are imported and subject to warehousing scheme, GST is not chargeable until the goods are released for home consumption from the warehouse.

GST is not chargeable on goods imported from a place outside Malaysia to Labuan, Langkawi or Tioman (known as designated area)
????unless the goods are prescribed to be chargeable to GST by the Minister. However, goods supply from a designated area to Malaysia is subject to GST as if the supply were importation of goods into Malaysia."

Hey, thats a great idea. Watches are already duty free unless you're referring to the GST. I plan to buy a watch from UK but isn;t sure will there be GST impose on it? I have asked few people from industry and some say yes and some say no.

Not sure if Langkawi works. But GST on watch is definitely yes. The custom will charge the GST if you insured and declared the watch value. They will literally ask you for money upon delivery

Oh thats a bummer. The savings after shipping and GST wouldn't make it attractive to buy from overseas. Its also risky to not have the watch insured for the full value just incase it goes missing in the mail.

If you want to escape from GST, best to import the watch to an address in Langkawi or Labuan. Then get someone or yourself to pick it up there. Hopefully you don't get stopped at the entry point coming home.

For the last year and the half since GST was implemented, the customs operations at the packaging centres with regards to GST was still work-in-progress. They have now streamlined the operations and it would now be difficult to courier through a watch without being detected and charged for GST.

I would also recommend that you don't underpriced the value of the package. It would be better for insurance as well as for GST calculation. Customs can, if they do not believe the value on the manifest, to revalue an item based on their understanding for GST purposes.

If you do sent a watch for repairs overseas and it got stopped on the way back, bring along all the documentation to proof that the watch was yours in the first place and the purpose was just for repair.

Okay, so there is no GST is send to Langkawi? No problem, I can travel there and wear the watch back on my wrist. Need to find a postal address there that will receive the watch for me.
