Exercise caution when you purchase via online forum
« on: October 27, 2010, 06:57:50 AM »
I came across a post by Michael Sandler on Timezone in which he cautioned fellow members there against making online purchases without due diligence. I thought I would share an extract from his post highlighting the pertinent points. On Malaysia Watch Forum you can refer to the "Recommendation (Good Guys)" board in the Classifieds Section for seller references.
Caveat Emptor.

Quote
Be extremely wary when dealing with a poster who has a tiny handful of posts who is selling watches at prices that appear to be too low. We have already had a number of people here who were ripped off because they were simply not careful enough. They did not properly verify references (remember...references can be very easily faked with fake email addresses), and they rushed into a transaction without making sure it was legitimate.

Other things to look out for:
- Sellers who are brand new to the forum and who will not provide a verifiable address and phone number
- Sellers who seem "evasive" when questioned
- Sellers who can't answer questions about the watches they're selling
- Sellers who, through email, use language or syntax inconsistent with the language or syntax in their posts
- Sellers who will not provide photos of the watch they are selling to verify they have it. A good check is to ask for a photo of the watch with the time and date set to something you choose. Don't choose 10:10. A legitimate seller who is new to the forum should be willing to take a photo or two to verify he/she has the watch in his/her possession.

In most cases, the scammers have used Yahoo, Ymail, Rocketmail or Gmail addresses, but be wary regardless of the email address in question. More often than not, they are posting more commonly seen brands: Rolex, IWC, Omega, Breitling, Patek, etc. Often they are posting verbatim copies of someone else's posts. They aren't even writing their own ad copy.

Ultimately....if the deal doesn't feel exactly right, walk away. Prices which seem too good to be true generally ARE too good to be true. You're not likely to get a legitimate watch on the Sales Corner or Showcase for $1000 below market value. You're much more likely to simply lose your money. Several already have.

Please be careful! Being hasty or thinking you need to rush because it's a great bargain is exactly what the scammer is hoping for. Don't let your guard down.

Ah thanks for the tips.

How about if buying from the bay? If the seller is rated "power seller" is it considered as safe trader?

I don't have much experience buying from Ebay so I really cannot comment on that.
Maybe some other sifus here can help to advise Abel here.

another good advice would be to pay via paypal as opposed to wire transfer. "Power seller" or not, i dont think that would be a good benchmark to determine a genuine seller. just my 2 cents.

Good Advice...

Thank you Sire...

But the bad thing now would be, the fake seller also read this and they can improve their scam by knowing what we are checking...sigh...

Good advice indeed. Paypal does offer some buyer protection so it's a good choice whenever it's available.

How true. It's very difficult to keep them away from our forum. That's why it is important for us to be vigilant and to report any malicious activity to the MODs via the "Report to Moderator" option at the bottom right of every post.

Well done Peter. You're the only one I know who keep such precise count of his Ebay transactions.  :D
1 bad experience out of 100 is not too bad but it goes to show that even Power Sellers are not to be 100% trusted.

Easy to keep track coz i got 99 feedbacks until i stopped using ebay haha.

Not much that can be done actually. The other side say they did send and i say no. At the end he got a bad feedback and i lost out on usd50.

I've never encountered problems with ebay yet (fingers crossed). I experienced 3 items that didn't arrived from 3 different sellers. 1 gave me a full refund, 2 resent the items which eventually I received in the mail.

A note to anyone who intends to use ebay/paypal, if you didn't receive items, you can open a dispute case.
If the seller sold you a fake watch and insists it's genuine, Paypal can't help you and will ask you to settle it with the seller.
If the seller sent you an empty box, you're screwed which is the case with a Seiko member on WUS forum.

On sales forums, it's not just the buyer who has to be vary of the seller but if you flip watches, you should also be vary of the buyer. A buyer can scam you as well. I receive emails from strangers who are "extremely eager" to buy my watches and I often prefer not to deal with these kind of people. They are often from certain countries which I won't mention here.

One other thing you could do to verify a seller/buyer on sales forums, is to ask to be added as a friend to his facebook account. Once added, you could see whether he's a real person or not, with real activities, updates, etc. You could also do a search on his email, genuine parties would show some results. I believe many of us here or in other forums would have a facebook account.

exercise cautious and of course "buy the seller".

payment should be via paypal (through CC).

This is to protect oneself if in case paypal refuse refund... we can always have a 2nd protection from CC.

sorry if i missed out on anything and if anyone would add to the above.

cheers

Ha ha. That's a real motivation for future sellers to start accumulating their posts on Malaysia Watch Forum.

Its not a problem buying watch online... it just risky... I encounter a couple of problem receiving a broken watch & some is not as described. As far as I experiences, all sellers refund back my money back if got any dispute or the item as not described & need to be sent back.

Just adding some extra tips buying on eBay:
1. Always buying from a seller with rating more than 95%
2. Check the number item the seller had been sold.. the more the better....
3. Check the feedback. Dont buy from the seller with many negative feedback... of course this will effect the seller's rating also. The more negative.. the lower it will get.
4. Only pay via paypal. Safer.

Some good seller also got a 'batch' POWER SELLER... This seller definitely can be trusted. Otherwise can use some tips above before buying... Some items that I bought, I didn't receive.... open a dispute.... & the seller refund my money back... So the tips above really useful to find a good seller to deal with. Buy with confidence.  ;D

It just my 2 cent experiences. Maybe some member has any tips to add. Thanks...
