I am back
« on: April 06, 2016, 11:11:25 AM »
How times flies…

Malaysia used to be a tax free haven for watches but not anymore.

Since the implementation of GST last April, watch acquisition has gone down trend. At least that’s my view. Coupled with the unflavored exchanged rates, watch aficionados finds the current prices not attractive anymore? Maybe then, another new batch of watch enthusiasts emerges from the new horizon?

So, what now?. Are you prepared to pay the extra percentage to get your next holy grail or are you looking elsewhere, overseas buy or perhaps online buying from international community?
Watch lovers with deep pockets should have no issues but people like you and me..(”grin”)

Nowadays, a simple Rolex Air King (14000) takes approx.. RM9-10k after some hard bargain. These model can be had for just RM6k plus…earlier. And that the common scenario. Heck, now its even difficult to own a nice mechanical Oris (where got quartz Oris).

But look on the bright sides, more people are now looking at the AP, Hublot, PP and whats not..(”grin again”).
The current ‘Steel bezel’ Rolex Daytona are nowhere to be seen in an AD. Believe me, these models will ‘shoot’ up like crazy (once they stop productions?) and people are now waiting for the newly introduction of the up and coming ‘ceramic’ bezel Daytona. Just like the Exp 2 (40mm) these 2008 up models are costing a bomb.

So, for the more or less the same amount of $$, I would rather go for the used Daytona than the current new‘Batman’.

Above are my personal views.

What say you?

You've hit the nail on the head David. My previous purchases of watches through the internet used to get delivered to my doorstep safely. Nowadays, post GST, every time a timepiece gets delivered to Malaysia, it gets 'stuck' at Customs Complex KLIA and the ONLY reason for this is that you have to go and settled GST. Any good deals or bargains obtained from overseas web stores gets lost through GST...Imagine if you purchase a 10K watch, you end up handing over 0.6K. Arrrggghhhhh!! For us who are not privileged enough to make overseas trips, this still seems to be the only option. Go figure!

Thanks Chris/Tony/others

A long absent is I am trying to stabilizing my 2nd career after my official retirement from the corporate world.

After some initial struggling, I am more or less find lights at the end of the tunnel.

Now passion cum business for those who know me. Finally paid off my liabilities. For most Malaysian, house hold debts like housing & car loan takes the big chunk of our earning and left with pitiful disposal income. And with this petite disposal, (we) spend on our passions.

Maybe, for online purchases, ask the seller to describe contents other than watches/timepieces. Try put 'meter gauge' or something to that effects. No?

Back to watches...Besides the new Daytona, the new air king and the exp 1 looks nice too. Personally, I prefer the new exp 1 compare to the more busier dial of the new airking. I heard that Lady datejust (26mm) is going to phase out. And introduce the new lady date just (28mm). How true is this?. Just imagine compare between a rolex timepc, 28mm vs 31mm (boysize). What says you?

Ya.....I was about to order a watch from seiya japan and then i thought about the "stuck in KLIA to pay GST" issue.  My trip to and fro KLIA will cost me another few hundred ringgit!

Rolex 2016 is a lot better than Rolex 2015. Some models that makes one sit up and pay attention. Cellini is nice too.

MYR is also gradually improving. Last acquisition was before currency meltdown and no more since then.

Maybe it's time to get back in the game.

Yes rm has improved and now is usd1 = rm3.9.  If buy overseas then exchange rate is favourable. But  local prices didn't drop. They stay the same

Someone predicted rm3.70 to a dollar in the next 2 months. Don't whether its true.

Fat chance, that prices at AD or GD would soften their prices in the near future. Remember these business input their stock not long ago.

Business man have their overhead to look after. Yet sometimes, you find both watches of the same model quoting different prices, why?. Because one model input with lower cost than the other. Fair watch dealers did that. They pass the saving to the consumer.

But then, some models are very much lower than its counterpart. These you have to watch out. As the sayings goes; Good things not cheap / cheap things not good. They must have a price..

The present Cellini are indeed mouth watering and of course they cost a bomb to many. The models have had their own followers.
Recently, I had the good fortune to acquire one cellini danaos 4233 at a good price. Even the buckle is of solid 18k. (which retails at rm4k? at RC). Sold it at a neat profits, though. So its high time to looking around for these past cellini. You be surprised how reasonable prices these model quoted.

Don't know whether the SS Daytona price can hold not, I expect it to go down when they start shipping the ceramic model because the ceramic is so much nicer and it will always look new apart from the scratches from the polished centre links.

The SS Daytona besel is a scratch magnet and really you can't do much once its banged up and it cost a bomb to replace the bezel. Having said it still is a very nice piece. I disclose that I own an SS Daytona but prefer the newer Ceramic Daytona due to the fact that the besel won't get scratched easily and will always look mint.

Hope the Malaysia currency can recover, however I have lost faith in the country and the ringgit.

My top pic for basel this year is the Daytona followed by the explorer. both top pieces. Tudor also very nice bronze bay and upgrades to blackbay.

very impressed.

I agree with you here. The top picks for this year's Basel is the Daytona-C followed very closely by the explorer 1. The new hands make the whole outlook of the explorer seem more balanced, and the lume on the 3,6 and 9 makes it a pleasant difference. The Daytona...the only thing that went through my mind was "wow"!!! I was never a fan till I saw pics of this year's release. Rolex has finally listened to the watch fans out there and produced a Daytona C in SS. And with that white dial and black sub dials with the the black ceramic bezel...a beauty. Which only brings us to the most important question...when will it be till normal people like us can have a chance of purchasing this beauty without having to pay above premium to have it?

Hold on to your ss Daytona. Once the AD exhaust their existing stocks, the replenishing models are the ceramic ones
Meaning these ss model stop production?. Your guess is as good as mine.

Someone mentions here, ss Daytona -bezel is like scratch magnet and cost a bomb to replace. Wait till you hear the replacement cost of a ceramic bezel. Even my omega sea master ceramic bezel takes rm2k? to replace. These ceramic bezel would not fade but can cracked, unfortunately.

Shouldn't be as bad as the cost for a ROO ceramic bezel eh?

Everyone is so happy about the ceramic bezel being near impossible to scratch but no one seems to mention that it can chip or crack. You can polish ss if you scratch it. I think the ss model will hold it's value

Yea definitely not selling my ss Daytona the problem I have is that the serial number is my birthday. Can't sell due to that.

The ceramic bezel more ex but chances of it getting damaged is minimal in my experience compared to the steel getting worn out.
