Shipping off watches
« on: March 08, 2016, 08:28:05 AM »
Hi everyone,

In a midst of selling 1 of my subs to the States but it's my first time doing so..any tips on shipping? Which courier to use and insurances necessary? I've enquired with DHL n it costs about 800+ for insurance for a 40k watch.

Also how shud I package the watch? It doesn't have a shipping case, only d normal box.

Thanks n great day everyone.

Hi Rolexer,

My business ship stuff all the time with express courier companies to Europe, US, Australia.

I assume that cost is not an issue since it's a high value item and with reliability, security being top priority. In which case, I would ship with the "big boys" like DHL, FEDEX, or TNT.

From my experience, TNT offers the best rates. However, this is coming from the perspective of a corporate account where I enjoy good corporate rates.

If you have a trusted friend that does a lot of express courier shipping like me, with a corporate account, I will suggest you "leverage" on his rates and ship using his account.

As for the packaging, invest in a good solid materials that you should be able to source easily. Your watch box should be placed inside another solid box for protection. Take note that the packaging will be travelling half way across the globe and exposed to various climate change and potentially high humidity/condensation can occur.

However, you want to keep the box as small as possible (without compromise to protection) because the size of the package will affect the overall courier charges.

Cheers and all the best!

BTW - why did you sell to the States? Was it better price?

I have no experience with packaging, but isn't there a risk with shipping Rolex watches to the States?

There used to be restrictions on importing Rolex watches, and though there are reports saying this has been lifted, you may want to think twice.

Thanks for your detailed feedback. Was really a thorough insight. Guess am just nervous because i've heard of cases where there are disputes with insurance claims from the courier companies.

After comparing various offers globally, the States and HKG offered the best deals, most likely due to our currency situation.

Hopefully the watch arrives there in 1 pc.

Thanks again

Thanks for the heads-up.

I'm selling it to a reputable dealer over there, so i guess he knows what he's doing (i certainly hope so).  ;D

Ah! So the dealers overseas are offering more for the watch than local dealers?

Sorry, if you don't mind, can share with me which Rolex model is this? Just curious. Thanks.

I used DHL to send to Japan. Cost about 200 inc. insurance for a 4k watch. Took just 3 days to arrive safe and sound.

Thanks, good to hear that. Did you stuff the inside of the watch box fully?

I use bubble wrap inside the watch box, and some more bubble wrap outside.

i used to love EMS malaysia coz can insure for any amount..until they changed their policy to only allow purchase of insurance from a main shop. tracked n registered took anywhere from 5 to 12 days

DHL can be bit shitty when it comes to insurance amount, sometimes even won't accept 'higher value' items. their shipping weight jumps in 1 kg increments. mind u, this is for a non corporate account.

i prefer TNT now. fast, can be insured up to 2500RM lol. in the states..once it hits the ground..it will be transported by fedex.
shipping weight goes in 500gm increments.

find out from the buyer if he wants u to declare full amount..most won't for tax purposes. I ship there a lot, i insure and declare to the max i can..and cross my fingers the fact that its registered and tracked it will get there safe. so far so good

am having some issues now however with an incoming..seller shipped using registered USPS..its been 3 weeks and its gotten lost in the states we believe...
