Aviator Watches - How Renowned Are They?
« on: December 02, 2015, 09:28:42 AM »
Hi everyone,

Thought I'd just ask you all here what you know about the Aviator brand? I was fortunate enough to own one earlier this year, but I know so very little about it as I don't see too many shops in Malaysia that sell it; nor do I see people wearing them.

As far as I know, it's got Russian originality but has been joined with Swiss-quality precision - hence the 'Swiss Made' words on later watches such as mine.

May I know what you think about the brand? Is there anything unique about it apart from its perceived pilot watch appearance?

Maybe this thread will interest you:

PM me if link get removed if its not allowed.

Anyway TLDR from what i read, if its auto version made by Volmar, then should be good, if Quartz version by Scorpio then best to avoid.

Personally, i would never buy a watch with a name of "Aviator"

But from what i read, some people love the brand. How much will this baby cost?

I have the Aviator Aircobra Quartz. Pretty well built. I think this brand origin from Russia but nowadays it use swiss movement. Love  more true Russian watches like Sturmanskie or  Poljot.

Thanks for sharing the link! It's an Automatic (with 7750 Valjoux movement), so it's safe to assume that Scorpio is nothing to be worried about. From links I found elsewhere, it's around RM8,000 - RM8,500. But there was another website that said $3,240 brand new  :o Not sure what currency it was referring to, though:

Not too sure about the appreciation/depreciation value on this particular Aviator.

Please excuse the extremely noob question coming up: But including Aviator and CCCP, what's the hierarchy like from top to bottom in terms of how they are perceived in value/workmanship/'status'?

I suggest you save up and buy an IWC, their Pilot range IMHO is the best there is.

Not really sure a hierarchy for those brand because I think CCCP is a true Russian made just like the Strella, Sturmanskie and Poljot. If you want the Russian watch, try to find the one that use Russian movement. They have a interesting feature like mechanical alarm and at a reasonable price. They also have a chronograph with two subdial using Poljot 3133 movement. Just my opinion on this matter  :) You could also look at  the Alexander Shorokhoff Avantgarde Collection, Chronograph C01. Might also suit your budget.

Correct me if im wrong, if i'm not mistaken Aviator used to be a Russian watch brand but it had been bought by german company. One russian watch seller told me so. Or mybe he mixed up with something else.
