I have been a lurker at this forum for some time. Recently I have an itch to get hold of an Omega Speedmaster after seeing a beautiful original Speedmaster on someone's wrist. I have done some research in the Internet and have basically targeted the ceramic Speedmaster with the newer 9300 movement. However there is no appeal during a check at an AD last weekend. Now I am considering to get hold of
1) the "more original" 42mm Speedmaster Professional with manual winding
2) the 44mm Speedmaster with the 9300 Automatic movement and date
I am more of an automatic watch with date person and I am pretty fix on the 44mm Speedmaster with the newer 9300 movement either the s/s or titanium version

However any comment or feedback from sifus on the Speedmaster in terms of movement and history background is most helpful before I pull the final trigger

While I may not be a sifu, I am a traditionalist. I will vote for the manual wind speedmaster professional any day. An icon of the watch world. Almost anyone that I know who loves watches will have three watches in their stable. A sports Rolex, a grand seiko and an omega speedmaster professional.

I agree manual wind versions are the way to go.
But the Speedmaster '57 is a close second...
At 41.5mm, it wears better, features a new movement with a date as well.
The 44mm ones just wears kinda big for my taste...

Hi mate, im no guru but i learnt a few things throughout my years of collecting. If you:

a) Like a piece - in this case, the new ceramic speedy.
b) Keep on looking a that same piece.
c) Can't sleep without thinking about that piece.

I'll say go with whatever that you like. Be a champ, use it, enjoy it and do whatever you want to do with it.

Thank you all for the valuable feedback. I have noted the history behind SMP during my research on the Moonwatch which true enough is reflected in most on the feedback.
I have bad experience with a manual wind IWC Portofino 7 days that I acquired this year. The crown is of good size but there is a need to apply quite an amount of pressure and also there is a lot of winding required especially from low reserve to almost full reserve to the extend that it hurts my fingers most of the time. This is in comparison to the effortless needed to wind my Omega SMP 300 which explains my preference for automatic watches.

Anyway will check both the 42mm and 44mm Speedmaster again when I have the time. Will appreciate recommendation from fellow members on the AD, Grey dealer or used watch outlet to best hunt for the Speedmaster.

with clear caseback, none.
1861 with ceramic bezel, got but only limited edition snoopy models.

If I am not mistaken, there more variation of the 42mm Speedmaster Professional.
1) Hexalite, S/S bracelet, non-transparent caseback (Model: 311.30.42.30.01.005)
2a) Hexalite, Leather strap, transparent caseback (Model: 311.33.42.30.01.002)
2b) Hexalite, Leather strap, non-transparent caseback (Model: 311.33.42.30.01.001)
3a) Saphire, S/S bracelet, transparent caseback (Model: 311.30.42.30.01.006)
3b) Saphire, S/S bracelet, non-transparent caseback (Model: 311.30.42.30.01.005)
All of the above model is package with special boxes and 2 extra Nato straps. Anyone interested can definitely find the above models from the Omega website

Here is the picture of the Hexalite, Leather Strap with transparent caseback from the seller that has sold this pristine piece to someone that has contacted the seller before me.

Went to shop and tried out these. Personally I prefer the straight lugs, hands and more 3D dial of the 9300 '57.
But surprise that they are quite light in weight... Too bad didn't see the bracelet version of the '57.

They are same priced.

What is your choice?

imo, the regular 9300 speedy looks abit unbalanced after being used to seeing the manual ones that everyone is used to.
its basically a combination of a larger dial, with subdials that are about the same size as the older ones, and this creates more bare space on the dial.
the '57 9300 has a design that looks abit more classic in proportion as they made the subdials larger, and which i would prefer but only for the black dialed version.

ya, that one.
just the main issue is finding one now in good condition whos hands, logo etc that dont show signs of corrosion.
else thats rm2k worth of parts to be replaced...

I actually also found the crystal at the back is too large as being seen from the side of the watch, kind of less solid.

Also do check out First Omega in Space, which reissue based on speedy ref 2998.
I like it very much, IMHO, one of the best reissues speedy. Priced much cheaper than 9300 '57.

I only a manual winding speedmaster . open back case. Certainly not the original moonwatch since some debate it should has a solid caseback . It wears pretty nice on my 7.5 inch wrist and its one of the most comfortable watch i have. However having said that, it might not be a good daily beater since you have to constantly wind it every 48 hours and some might not get use to a a watch without the date function .

But if i was given a chance to choose again between the 44mm and 42mm. My choice is the 42mm and it will certainly be a keeper in your collection . It's still look nice wore by a 70 year old man . Timeless ! =)
