Hi Guys

Has anyone consolidated recently?

I have sold off my RG Daytona and replaced it with an SS SubC date. Now my collection is like this in order of acquisition time:

Milgauss GV
SS Daytona Black Dial
5711 Patek Nautilus Blue Dial
SS SUBC Date

I feel this is not optimised for me yet. Ideally I would like to have a 5 piece collection (the fifth being the grail). Which would look like (I am basing this on my current realistic situation):

1) 5711 (the only piece that could replace this would be a mint 3700 or 5711p, I have considered a 15202 and I really love it but after thinking for a long time, my collection only can have either RO or Nautilus, so at the moment really happy with this no changes here)
2) Sub <-- maybe replace with a 1680 red or a smurf either or leave it as it is either way Sub is a must have in my collection
3) Milgauss <--- thinking of replacing with a IWC BP/PP Calatrava/PAM 127/217 not sure about which to get here still thinking, really need to a get an iconic classic piece here... more options/planning/time/thinking/research required here.
4) Daytona <---- very happy with this piece, could only be replaced by a vintage Daytona or platona or if rolex release new SS Daytona with ceramic bezel and bracelet)
5) grail and final piece - this I have thought about carefully and the time of acquisition would be when it is like GFC or bad economy world wide. When an event such as a GFC happen again I plan to hunt for the grail, Ideally I plan to have it before I hit 40 which is 10 years from now!! I am considering PP 5131 or PP 5070 or PP 5970 any one of this 3 will be good enough for me.

For me 5 max.

Have any of you guys though about your collection? anyone consolidated or kept the collection growing? how many watches is enough for you guys? how would you round off your collection?! any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Am always consolidating . Problem is when the numbers become too few, i start buying again on the lower end spectrum and consolidate on those pieces again. Case on point, i sold my Big Pilot and Rolex Explorer 216570 for a AP Royal Oak 15400 recently. Thereafter i purchased used Omegas as beaters and now am looking to trade those in for a Rolex (again). Even I do not know how many watches i want. I know I like choices. Have always looked at obtaining a Lange to round up my collection. Best of luck in your efforts of consolidating.

For someone with impressive selection, should have the banker's selection yes?

Hey bro Gmac you have some serious watches man.

The BP is so sexy. I always think about it when I think pilot watch.

Do you still have your nautilus? I think I saw you had a few AP's a ceramic Daytona before?

Yea still have got all those you mentioned. Current stable is down to the PP 5711, AP forged carbon diver, AP RO 15400, VC Overseas Chronograph, Cerachrom Daytona, and the Submariner Hulk. The rest are part of or subject to a consolidation exercise.

Consolidation of watch collection is quite a difficult task to master. I tried to follow the basic tenet of: one for formal wear, one business sports watch and one rough use watch. But it never really sees the light of day...

Good luck with your consolidation. To be honest, I think having 5 good pieces in a collection is better than having 50 worthless pieces

Growing old is compulsory. Growing up is optional!
PP Calatrava 3919R

Yeah I think less is more also for normal people like us. Unless of you have more of the grails pieces.

I was thinking of consolidation not long ago.

http://www.malaysiawatchforum.com/index.php/topic,14119.msg121599.html#msg121599

Even then, I doubt if I can pull it and hold on to smaller number, but higher end pieces.
I was right, I can't. I realised that I need variety and here I am, back in minor expansion mood again

Just when I thought i'm done with my current 11 pieces then an itch got me...i'm now exploring indie brands...but that indie piece will burn a hole in my pocket so i'm consolidating again by trying to sell my Blancpain FF (Dark Knight), Breguet Type XXI and JLC Navy Seal Alarm then add $$ to get that piece.

As of now I own:

PP5711
VC Overseas
AP ROO
IWC Portuguese WG Perpetual Calendar
A.Lange & Sohne Grand Langematik
Harry Winston Midnight Big Date
Hublot Aerobang Skeleton
Rolex Hulk
Pam270
Blancpain FF (Dark Knight)
Breguet Type XXI
JLC Navy Seal Alarm

Aiming for a DeBethune....

I guess i'll stop at 10 timepieces....

Limit to 5 good watches? Sounds good in theory, but personally, not gonna happen...... I quite like the diversity in collection no matter whether it's cheap or expensive....

i have trouble consolidating. I somehow develop a love for most of my watches , whenever i wanted to sell them and at that very moment when i took them out, my heart somehow sunk and ng seh dak. But i have to admit some watches i do want to get rid off but have no time to do pictures and postings.

The problem i have is , i tend to develop too much love in watches, regardless of made. Its the feel thingy .. lol. I hope this won't happen in choosing my wife next time...or else i am going to get into deep trouble ! lol !!

And Seira you have a solid collection over there and for me i will have choosen the 127 fiddy over your milgauss. You need a pam in your collection and 127 or 217 is a solid one, especially with the amount of straps that are available ! of course the calatrava is a beauty too i would want one myself too. Maybe pam for now and calat. for later !

For the past year or so I have been trying to consolidate my collection. Currently I have 12 noteworthy pieces (this is after getting rid of tag heurs, tissots, siekos and an omega). Still I feel it’s a few too many. I agree with other members of the forum that it is better to have a few really nice watches than many regular to ok watches (this of course depends on the individual to categorize). Just yesterday I gave my wife my 36mm Explorer 1 that she wanted for some time.

Many members have mentioned that 5 watches are enough for a collection. Somehow, for me the magic number is closer to 10 as a few watches were gifted my mother (submariner), wife (JLC master calendar – wedding gift) and one piece is passed down by my late grandfather (Omega seamaster of the 60’s). This leaves me with 7 more watches to keep of which 2 are AP royal oaks (the moon phase day date and the new 41mm in white), a Rolex yachtmaster,  Pam 392 and 512, PP calatrava, JLC reverso 1931, omega constellation.

Now I want to get the ALS 1815, a VC patrimony and also Rolex daydate. In order to get these, I will surely have to sell a few to consolidate. The problem comes here as to which ones to keep and which ones to get rid of.  I have decided to get rid of the Pam 392 and constellation, but the others are tough to part with.

If I really really need to consolidate my collection, out of 30 over watches, I will probably keep the following watches:
1. Rolex Explorer II
2. Seiko MM300
3. Seiko Orange Monster
4. Citizen Eco-Drive Minute Repeater
5. Tissot Carson 18k Gold
6. Oris big crown date pointer
7. Epos Originale
8. Titoni air master
9. Ball mad cow
10. Ball mad cow TMT

Having flipped some 40+ watches over the years, I could say with some degree of conviction that I have been able to keep my collection consolidated to a certain no. Of course, there were still some impulse buys here and there; but I would generally flip it off to keep to the no. that I have in my mind. It's a revolving no. but I have been able to advocate enough discipline to stick to it over the last 8 months. There is one grail watch that I really liked and would like to buy; but have always been putting it off as I had kind of promised my better half that it would be the watch that would eventually cap my collection. Anyway, I found that flipping watches and making new friends with the other collectors (except for some really fussy ones) over sales, had been pretty enjoyable thus far.

Rolex | Omega | Bell & Ross | Panerai | Seiko | G-Shock |
