For discussion sick, to fuel up the forum:

I browse facebook and saw an ad where six of my facebook friend like a replica watch ad.

The ad show an IWC watch with price RM600. Off course its a replica.

So I go into the fb page (26k likes) and it even said at its "about" in Bahasa that they supply branded and high quality replica watches.

I am a bit puzzle as to:

1) why these people (including my friends) openly support replica?

2) will your perception against these peoples (or friends) changed?

3) will you tell your friends off about its illegal to buy a replica?

*im not looking down on people who wear replica, its just there are always homage brand, so I seriously dont see any reason why one need replica, except the need to show. More so, why bother "like" or openly "support" such business.

Each and everyone have their priority and it's not yours or my rights to critise people on wanting to support replica watches.  As long as they don't try to sell replica but claiming it to be the real thing. .... in that scenario I'd voice out and rip his balls apart.

I imagine people who wear replicas do so because:

1.  They want that look.

2.  They don't want to pay the ludicrous luxury brand mark-ups.

3.  They don't give care about wearing fakes.

I try to judge people on how they treat others and the environment, not what they wear.  Some great people work their arses off every day but for charitable causes and can only afford a $20 Casio or replica and some people who collect Rolex are just trashy entitled spoiled arseholes who never did a full day of work their entire lives (Mummy and Daddy paid for their watches).  I'd rather have a pint with the guy wearing the replica, personally.

Type of people who buy replica goods:-

1st type: Want to show off, can't afford to pay that much.
2nd type: Want to show off, able to afford to pay that much (but too stingy to pay), and though nobody will notice they are wearing fake.
3rd type: Don't know what are they buying, as long as it looks OK and the price is cheap.

I once was a buyer of replica branded shirts and belt and belongs to 1st type, yes, i was a cheap @ssh*le.

I have few friends where they totally have no idea how to differentiate between a replica and a genuine products.

Once I argued with them, because they are saying the replica G-shocks selling at those Kiosk is the same selling in the G-Factory.

For collection purpose:
I don't own replica pieces because it has no value. I am a collector and I only collect pieces that have good value retention and demand. That is why I only bought in Rolex and Patek.

What about others wearing replica:
Well it does not bother me! If they want the look its all good, but for me I want the look and the value. No value not for me.

Would you like to collect stuff that has no value?

A never-ending debate. I have bought homages, but I have never bought fakes. But, what my friend wants to do with their money; this is their personal choice. Although, if they did ask for my opinion, I would be against the idea of buying fakes - perhaps pointing them towards something more affordable, or a homage. After all, they most likely just want the "look" and are not for "collection".

I think for most of us in this forum, and amongst our peers, almost everyone can afford a RM500 watch; if they're too thrifty to buy a G-Shock or Casio, then don't imagine that you will be able to change that mindset :-)

I believe that people that go into replica are those that are misinformed...
I mean how many time have we heard:-

"replicas are 1:1 like the original"
"even seasoned pros cannot tell the difference"
"some pawnshop in some country got scammed by a replica watch coz they can't tell the difference"

These stories seem to validate the quality of replicas.
We have to bear in mind some people do not dare to walk into high end AD to check out watches.
Again, with snobby AD stories posted around, can't entirely blame them.

So they end up in forums. Replica forums documenting how good the replica industry is.
They take comparison pics. And yeah... some look really convincing...
They they thought... why spend a huge amount of cash when I can get the exact same thing for less...
That's the mistake there.

If my friends were into replicas, I would try to share my knowledge with them.
Try to understand their intentions for choosing replicas.
And if possible, change their mindset towards replica watches.

Some of my friends are rich enough to buy the real deal and they have the real deal.
But everyday, they wear a replica just because of fear that they would damage the original...

Hanz, most of the fakes I've seen are just rubbish.  Not replicas, because that implies 1:1, but poor copies.  BUT, the top fakes these days are actually pretty much replicas.  Aside from the movement, the quality of the top fakes is actually very good, pretty much the same as the real deal as far as I can see.  I'm not just talking about Rolex and PAM, either, which are cheap and easy to fake.  I saw a fake Hublot 7750 in Hua Hin that was really, REALLY convincing.  As in, if it was sitting in an AD and not a street stall, I would believe it was real.  Even the movement was excellent, possibly a genuine 7750.  Or at least a very well decorated clone.

As has been mentioned, I wouldn't expect a watch enthusiast to collect fakes, or even buy one fake.  We like watches, so we want the real thing, regardless of cost.  But for a member of the general public, I can totally understand why they might look at one watch for $5,000 and a similar one for $500, and take the $500 watch.  Most people just don't care, and why should they care?  I don't take orders from corporations an lawyers, I don't care if Richemont says Fakes are For Fake People or whatever, I buy the real thing purely because that's what I want, so why should anybody else what some corporation says they should do - nobody wants to be a corporate bitch!  They probably think WE are nuts for spending 10x on ostensibly the same watch.  Maybe THEY are right!

One more thing... while I couldn't care less if somebody wants to wear a fake watch, its a TOTALLY different thing trying to pas off a fake as the real thing.  If you try and sell me a fake, you'd better hope that a) you do not live in Australia or b) if you live in Australia you'd better have protection.

IMO...i got no problem with some of my friends buying fake/reps...what i hate most is those who wear obvious fakes but still insist that it was authentic...

Well well well, i gotta admit i was 'a traitor' before. The main reason i bought one (oh gosh!) was that i afraid to lose the genuine ones i own. We live in KL, and one must agree this isn't the safest city to goes around in ur branded bags and watches. Especially eating time at night in Jalan Alor (food) or even evening stroll in beaches in Penang. The copy was so good (shame on me) i once accidentally wore it into an uptown AD without gotten kicked out. Well, it doesn't last long when i went for a swim with it. Alas...

Don't get me wrong here. I don't buy watches to keep them in safe. I used and rotates them extensively.  Beaches, seawater, water themepark, diving. I used the watches for the reason they're made (3 Submariners, last count).

I don't worry of scratches on my watches, but i do worry of being robbed of one. We all have heard of such incidents happens to our own circle of friends, don't we? Scratches cost hundreds RM, an accident knock or fall cost thousands,  but being robbed cost tens of thousands.

Anyw, the emergence of high quality replicas does concerns me. So my options are to collects non- popular models and limited editions. Kermit, Hulk, Blue TT, Gulf Monaco, Maurice Lacroix Squellete etc etc. Those can't be replicated well enuf so i guess I'm playing safe to avoid being called of wearing replica.

Moral of the story? Wear fake will only avoid you losing your watch but it will not stop you from getting harm

To each his own. I know of friends who are in to really "good" replicas. I don't judge him, nor do I bother to tell him off. I won't even bother to educate him as I know that he knows his stuff. It was a PAM that he was wearing, to which I commented...nice watch. And his nonchalant reply was...it's a grade 1 fake. We both had a good laugh. He took it off for me to have a look at, I gave it back to him after I had a good look. And that was that...topic closed. We continued to have our coffee and chatting about all things else.

eventually after lots of poisoning, he eventually bought an original which was a seiko.
