Watch Snobbery
« on: June 08, 2015, 08:03:02 PM »
Hi guys, I just want to share my experience today on a watch forum. I'm just venting a lil. The world over here is a much better place.

Scenario 1
There was a chap discussion an entry level Swiss watch at a certain budget and Tag Heuer was brought up. It was bashed as usual especially the Formula 1 range in which it was mentioned as cheap and o no value. I mentioned that I found the newer Formula 1 range to be of good value as it now came with an automatic movement at a very affordable price range. The reply that came was:

"Hahahahahahahaha

Tag anything and value for money don't belong in the same sentence. Hilarious. Now that Tag is moving down the food chain, its even worst."

Scenario 2
A chap offered his Explorer 2 for trade. I offered him my Explorer 1 for trade, bear in mind my Explorer 1 was a newer model than his. His reply was "Who wants to go backwards?" That to me was pretty insulting.

Anyhow, I will refrain from posting further in that watch forum.

A more refreshing read on MWF than there.

We all have to start somewhere. My first brand new Swiss watch was a Tag Heuer and it brought me to lots of other watches thereafter. I think that Tag Heuer is a value-for-money marque, and I also shared your thoughts on the F1 series. Similarly, I owned both Tudor Pelagos/Black Bay and its elder sibling, but I personally wear the Tudor more as I felt that it was a more updated piece and I simply love the understated elegance associated with this marque. Your E1 is part of Rolex's historical piece and the chap owning the E2 was only belittling his own lack of knowledge, when he belittled your offer. So no point fretting over it but to just wear your E1 proudly and move on.

Those people clearly know less about watches than the average WIS. That's just the thing about forums, anyone and everyone can join and post but doesn't mean all stuff is gold. I say don't take it to heart and just move on :)

Those people there... are also here :-)

Back when I was in college, I also wanted a Tag; many of my friends had it gifted to them by the parents. When I finally saved enough, I went for an Omega. Do I still like Tag? Not really.. apart from the few models that age quite gracefully, the rest of the range seem to "expire" very quickly. Again, I'm more an aesthetics person, not so much a movement kinda guy.

My first swiss watch was a Tissot Automatic, and the second one was a Tag Formula 1 (quartz). I had both these watches for almost 11 years (just sold them recently). The resale value wasn't great, but do I regret buying them - No. At that point that was what appealed to me and more importantly could afford. From there on I moved to Omega, Rolex, Panerai, Patek's and so on. But till I had the Tag, I would always wear it once in a while. So I say you buy what you like.

Regarding the Explorer 1, i think its better than explorer 2 (specially the 36mm version).

Cheers

People have different preferences and tastes for a reason! Some may not like tag or any other watch but some may love it.....

GNR: It is nice to read this post. We are only human.

IMHO and without getting into the details I would disagree that a newer explorer rolex is worth more than an older rolex explorer ii. This is also the problem with watch trades as there is usually imperfect information between seller and buyer. Experienced collectors have their own networks and usually avoid the normal channels.

Actually I would this as an opportunity to make a friend and to learn something new by asking for more info.

Just my $0.02.
