Need advice/comment - Zenith related
« on: March 08, 2015, 10:07:50 AM »
Dear All sifu's, i'm currently hunting for a pilot watch and my friend recommend Zenith pilot type 20 GMT. after some browsing and research, i found that the Zenith type 20 annual calender took  the place the GMT.

Need advice/comment - with the price range of the type 20 annual calender, is it the best in its range? (compare to other brands)

fyi, i prefer big size watch

The type 20, if I am not mistaken is an annual calendar + chronograph watch. It's very nice as it is running on an in-house El-Primero movement (high beat rate). It is the cheapest in-house annual calendar watch around. And the movement is very reliable.

Very much value for money. It is on my short list of watches to buy next.

Edit : the watch is running on Zenith cal. 4054, which is similar to what is used in Captain Winsor Annual Calendar. The cal. 4054 has a 50 hour power reserve, single barrel design. It is running on 36,000 VPH which makes it an El Primero movement, with glucydur balance wheel and kif shock protection system. It's a very thin movement at 8.3mm, even with two complications stuffed into it.

The watch itself is 48mm diameter with a height of 15.8mm. This is a truly in-house complicated watch that is selling for a lot less than other in-house watches which features an annual calendar and chronograph.

I prefer annual calendar to perpetual calendar as annual calendar is easier to set when the  watch stops. Also, adjusting the date is only required once a year at the end of February.

Many perpetual calendar watch is using a single corrector now to advance the date/day/month in a single push. Very convenient

The single pusher also poses a different set of problems. What if you over advance the date? It would take ages to get back to the correct date.

Annual calendar is the way to go, imho.

You simply can't go wrong with the Zenith Pilot Annual Calendar if the watch is not too big for your wrist.  The design and the big onion crown could be an acquired taste but I totally love how it looks.  Spectacular value for money as the watch is running on the legendary El Primero with an Annual Calendar module co-designed by the brilliant Ludwig Oeschlin.  Buy it!  You will not regret it!

I'd suggest u try hit the Pilot Montre d’Aeronef Type 20 GMT. I personally like the big numeral font with the massive crown.

I would pick the Annual Calendar too.
The price is not too far of a difference.
And the GMT Type 20 is not a true GMT simply because it does not have a date. Abit weird...
