Serious diving watch
« on: February 02, 2015, 09:43:15 PM »
Hi,

Any diver can recommend a diving watch with depth gauge, temperature, ascending and descending around RM1k or less? Preferrably, you have used them before. I am know Sub or Panerai are made for diving but I am not referring to them. I know Sunnto and Citizen make dive watches (some call them dive comp). Suggestions? Thanks

And save battery too.. Normal suunto D6 or D4 will take u around RM160-180 per battery change which normally will last u a year and a half or less depending on ur dive frequency. I think Zoop is a winner. But it is not for style. If one wear that and went shopping, sure become center of attraction  ;D

Just to add on. U might wanna check for Cressida Leonardo. I don't have direct experience to it but do have a friend using it. Seems that he's very happy to use that in replacement of his D6i.

I'm have no experience with Citizen Eco-drive. But if I'm not mistaken, it's an advance dive watch, not a dive computer.

All divers watch have this basic similar feat, 60mins rotating bezel. Although we have many diver watch lover around, not everybody knows how to properly use the rotating bezel. For a serious diver, this rotating bezel  is a serious thing when you want to determine the safest time for a diver to be at CERTAIN depth. U have to calculate it by using a dive table a.k.a RDP and use the watch as a tool to 'remind' u of the time.  However, dive watches are the last thing u would opt to if u were to use it for diving. Long ago, dive comp are scarce and expensive. So, the most practical, people use a dive watch (very popular Submariner at this time)

In modern time, we have dive computer to help. People dive for many reason and most - for fun. Having to calculate and recalculate for each dive is no fun. It is also less practical because sometimes u want to go deeper or shallower depending on what u gonna do underwater. Therefore,  dive comp helps a lot.  It calculates at real timing the safest depth, the safest time,  it notify safety stop or deep stop if needed and it will calculate ur minimum surface interval or us will risk herself to DCS.

SERIOUS diver, go for dive comp. One interesting thing, I've yet to see any diver brings any expensive dive watches for diving. Most is the famous sskx007/009 and that's very very seldom. Same goes with having a 500m/300m/200m/100m dive watch. We just appreciate the technicality and the complexity demonstrated by the watch.

So from you said, basically, all real diver watches are purely aesthetical or at most serve as backup watch. I hear the same comments before from another diver, just to be sure before I commit myself to another watch that I seldom use. I get the cheapest but functional. Not gonna wear it in the street.

Thank you guys for your feedback

Not that accurate but u can say it that way bro. Functionality and practicality almost does not exist except for some small numbers of hardcore die hard divers. If I have a Sub or even an Orient Ray, I honestly will not.. never bring it for a dive. One. High chance it get scratches. 2. High chance it got off my wrist and lost forever. Searching for something underwater is the last thing u wanna do  :o

I highly recommend the zoop for that. Last u the money and less maintenance. Puck is not bad. But I personally go for zoop which most DM are using. Cressi Leo is not bad of a style and functionality. Puck of Mares looks good and if u take care of it it will take care of u but Zoop is really the zooplankton of all from my opinion.

Just my opinion bro  ;D

I have a CITIZEN Promaster Eco-Drive AQUALAND Titanium Divers Watch JV0055-51E. Slightly above your budget (<MYR1500) but can do a lot.

It has a current depth display in analog to 100 m on the left of the dial. The same orange hand that shows the depth level also doubles as a reference for the energy storage in the battery when not in the diving mode.

Between the 2 o'clock and 4 o'clock position is a large window where the digital information is presented. It is able to show the date; day; dive data such as water depth, temperature as well as logs of dives; world time of 42 cities; and 3 alarms.

I know this watch has many important readings important to a diver. I find it quite impressive. However, I am not an experience diver and do not know what is missing features from this Citizen compare a dive comp say, Sunnto Zoop or D4i. Apparently, the dive comp can, and I quote

I don't think the citizen can do that though it has a "ascending too fast" alarm.

If u are going more serious in diving, one day u might wanna do NITROX or gas mixture. A dive comp helps on that.  Not to forget, the algorithm will also calculate and tell ur deco.

But truly I'm also impressed with the Eco-Drive functions after doing some reading although it is not a dive comp.

I am a dive professional (an instructor trainer, actually) and own/run a dive center.

For what you describe, get a Suunto Zoop or a D4.     Watches are well and good, but if you are a beginner diver, you want one device which gives you all the information that you need:  depth, time, ascend rate alarm and most importantly, no-decompression time, which a watch will not give.

I occasionally wear a watch when i am diving - but i always have a Suunto D9TX on my wrist when i get in the water.  That is the only piece of dive kit i travel with, as well (along with my u/w camera).

As long as there is "diver" marking on the dial to indicate the watch is ISO certified. I will go for it.
