What do you look for in a watch salesperson?
« on: August 13, 2010, 10:00:52 AM »
First and foremost no mention of which AD or boutique name, country where you encounter your experience is fine.

So what do you people look for in a sales person when entering a watch shop?
You dont care as long as max discount is given?
You like a knowledgeable sales which knows the watch movt, history, design philosophy etc...?
You just like them to be friendly?

What makes you go back to your regular AD or sale person?

Lets hear it

"You dont care as long as max discount is given"

Most of the salesperson is not WIS anyway.

my personal salesperson preference:

1) max discount (i'm cheapskate  :Dancing_banana:)
2) good attitude (not cocky, good follow-up, got patience  )
3) willing to give some free items like bags...(again, i'm cheapskate)
4) knowledge (since i always did my homework before going to buy, i also want to know how sincere is the salesperson for not telling me nonsense)

I think besides discount (if it does not defer more by 1%-3%) i will still buy from the person which gave me the best customer service.

Willingness to show me different watches even though they know (or might not) that i cannot afford now is a good sign.
I might not be able to afford a Breguet but who knows in the future. And thats when i will return to the person who served me best or was very patient with me for a long time although i did not buy anything initially.

I had to agree on this. I dont mind about the discount gonna give (but at least good dc lar). Most important is he is cool to talk with me even i dont look like able to afford those watches. Wear a G-shock go test drive patek... lol

Really pissed off when some of them look at your watches first before the conversation started. If you wear seiko or g-shock that time, u are bound to get crap treatment as in like "Why should I care to serve you if u are wearing "cheap" watch" :HammerHead: :HammerHead:

But if possible i rather buy the watch from independent shop instead of shop that have many gadzillion branches around. Cause the boss usually give good cs.  But still there are bad apples around lar  :HammerHead:

hmm, of course best discount is one of the major criterias in choosing a salesperson.

but i've met a salesperson which i must say i'm very impressed with locally. only 1 so far.
he's very patient and will show u a wide range of watches for as long as u r willing to try (or as many as he has in his store).
he'd even go as far as suggesting other watches which may suit u (which he does not have in his store).

after purchase (or right before/after), he even suggest what to get next to match the one i just bought.

he's the only one i keep back to, but not necessary to buy.
afterall, what's the use of a weak dollar when u don't take advantage  ;D

sincere, patient and good follow up are most impt to me. i just banned one of [Already said at the beginning please no mention of AD name - MWF mod] branch because of an inept salesperson. I'll not give that branch any business from now on.

max discount and friendliness are my main priority. also i prefer one who does not hawk over me every single time as if i am going to steal the watches. just give the customer some space. however, be ready to show the customers the watch if asked.

Agreed. plus point if they r knowledgable as well. I believe most WIS here know more than the average salesperson. To test them I normally start by asking whether they know what is the movement for that particular watch n take it from there.

1st of course.. maximum discount if can laa  ;D and approachable personality from sales person.

2nd ... dun lansi, sit down in your boutique, chit chatting away and look down on ppl... I may not be able afford the XXX watch with $$$$$ price tag sales person need to see future/  we may be able to recommend friends or fellow WIS to that sales person (passive free ads for sales person)

3rd... I think that there will need to be 2 ways communication here...for me, I will always respect sales person in any ADs or boutiques and not be a snob or a lansi person myself.

Note: sometime if sales person lansi.... we must lansi back  :Laughing_on_floor: if not where got fun :Dancing_banana:

what do i look for in a salesperson?

a. High slit skirt
b. plunging neckline
c. bountiful assets
d. knowledge - dun care.... i know what i want and i am not there to make friends  :Laughing_on_floor:
c. price - i am there to buy a watch and if it's between +- of my estimated price then i don;t really care much

 :Laughing_on_floor:

but truth be told... i don't really care much. everyone is there to earn a living. depends on how sincere he/she is honest and hardworking enough to earn it. if you are pleasant enough in your personality it'll show in your attidude. if not, too bad

I am not a big shot enough with copious amount of money to buy in a regular time frame from any person/establishment, so relationships are irrelevant for me and for the AD in my case.

so in my opinion..if you have the watch and i think the price is right... then that is the deal maker for me.

Must be very fast to close the deal with me in less than 10minutes, no matter how busy he/she is. Cos i normally sneak out from home with time left that less than 30minutes to rush back........ ;)

This  Though No. 1, 2 and 4 are more important for me than 3 since I don't expect much freebies if the sales guy is already giving me max discount.

To be frank, a good sales guy would be smart enough to give max discount if they know you are WIS because end of day, a WIS would know what the best discount in town is.

My best experience was when the sales person knew more about a watch that I had been researching. Pointed out small changes in an old and new model that I hadn't noticed. Happily unwrapped and let me try on the watch. Felt like I was talking to a fellow watch addict rather than a salesman.

True, it is kind of annoying if they gave you the "if-you-really-can-buy-now-then-I-call-my-boss-to-fight-for-additional-discount-for-you" sales gimmick. I tend to be a flipper so I buy and sell if I chance upon pieces that I like. Recently saw a Ball piece that I like and wanted to pull the trigger. I went straight to the point and asked the salesperson if he could give me xx%, and he said that it was not possible as Ball never gives such a discount. I told him that I have purchased 2 pieces of Balls at the same boutique previously and I know what was the common discount allocated. Then he played the sales gimmick above and wanted me to take out my credit card to show that I really wanted to buy so that he could speak to his Manager. Really young ciku. Then the manager saw me, came over to say "Hi, Dato!" and asked if I wanted to add another piece. You could see the young man's eyes widening for fear that I would complain about him. I ended up telling the Manager that the young man was serving me fine (give him chance lah); but when we were alone again, I advised him that next time don't insult the buyers like they must show the cash or credit card only could they talk about discounts. Times were not kind to luxury goods' purchases so CSR had to be top-notch or sales would be lost to other shops with better manners. Needless to say, he didn't get the sale.

First and paramount, I prefer to talk to a salesperson with good product knowledge. At the minimum, he or she should know as much as me. Even better if he or she knows more than I do. That way, I can learn something from the chat.

Secondly, I would want someone who is able to negotiate a reasonable discount with me. I understand that everyone needs to make their profit. At the very least, I expect the same discount percentage as other shops/boutiques. I have come across some sales assistant who are stuck up with the if you can afford it, you will buy regardless of the price.

Thirdly, it happens that stock runs out, system is down etc. So if you promise to return call to me, please do so. I will appreciate it.

Among all the comments. I totally agree with this 1.
I am also unable to regularly to buy watches and therefore, relationships are indeed irrelevant to me as well.

I seldom buy from shop only go look see look see and those who know me I mostly casual like fuck.

So most of the time in those big shop they no fuck me if I keep quiet.

But if I ask to see watches the reaction I got from them 50/50 la,  some very friendly some luke warm,  some black face.

But one particular in MV called AWG give worse experience,  i walk in wearing my SKX007, i ask to see the Alpine watch then I ask price n discount,  then one much senior sales guy gave me harsh words like its good deal already la that kind of stuff in unfriendly tone.

At first I just keep quiet ignore his rude remarks,  then I ask to see some BR vintage series,  then he utter something which I read it as if I cant afford Alpine then BR is off my range.

I say thank you n walk off quietly,  i can see from his eyes and facial reaction to his junior staff he feel triumph to demonstrate how he fenced off a poor ah pek who cant afford expensive watches.

Peter say it well most sales ppl are not WIS they don't undersand what a SKX007 represent XDDD

Well said bro. I will only go for the sales person that is sincere, polite and willing to serve, despite sometimes they are lack of knowledge of the watches that they are selling (understandable as one can not possess all the knowledge and details of so many watches). Therefore, I am always buy from those sales person who serve well and sincere. Just my own opinion..

I recall there was one salesperson at a boutique chain who was friendly and giving generous discounts. I was just into watches during early days and he was quite friendly in introducing types of watches. I was quite impressed that I got his name card and told him I wasn't ready yet but when I am ill get in touch with him. I did 2 years later via phone call and Sms, but when I inquired about a certain brand which I think the boutique didn't carry, he didn't even call me back and his Sms was sporadically disappointing. I remembered him and he didn't remember me. Nevertheless, he didn't get the sale. Sometimes remembering customers and follow up is even more important that initial impressions which didn't live up long term.

Having said this until today, I realized watch salespersons are like car salespersons, they just want to get he sale now and they never seems to remember you when you finally ready to buy watch/car which I find very disappointing. Now I just treat them as such and set low expectations. It's all about pricing now since they can't bring any value to the table.

i feel u, most of the salesperson nowadays has the thinking of "getting the sale now or never", some other time when u go back to them, they might be thinking that u r not a serious buyer, or, they r no longer working there anymore
