Suggestion - what watch to get?
« on: October 15, 2014, 08:08:12 AM »
Hi guys,

I’m new to this forum so apologies in advance if what I’m about to post have been answered before. I’ve checked the forum and have seen a post similar to this, but it was posted last year so would like some updated views if possible.

I’m looking to get a new (not pre-owned) men’s watch within the range of RM5,000 to RM6,000, nothing more, but have no idea where to start looking and what to consider. Would anyone be so kind as to give some pointers?

I'm a beginner and have no clue whatsoever when it comes to watches, so would really appreciate any suggestions.

Any help is much appreciated, thanks!

The tag aquaracer looks pretty bulky/sporty. Tissot sounds good.

I'm thinking of something medium sized and dressy, with leather strap.

The Longines Legend Diver would the best best choice for you meeting all your listed criteria!! Go and have a look at it in real life because picture cannot do you justice of how the piece would look like on your wrist

If you don't mind midsize and rubber strap can consider Brietling Superocean

TAG aquaracer auto is good choice here if you don't mine the ETA movement. Its not thick (maybe 13mm and less), both sporty and dressy for everyday watch.

If you allow, take a look at German Watch.

E.g. Stowa, Laco

They are the original Flieger Fav 5
2 handful of Stowas, 4 Makara and 4 HMT...

Armed with that budget and like you said, have no clue whatsoever about watches...
It can be a deadly combo.
My suggestion would not be a watch.
But I would suggest you go around AD's and look for something that suits your budget.
Any particular brand that catches your fancy?
Jot down all the necessary model numbers and ballpark prices.
Then go home, log on... and search for those models...
Then read read read... then ask around at the forums.
Asking for suggestions on what watch to get on a budget but without a specific direction is too tough to answer... hehehe... for me at least.
Don't feel intimidated to visit ADs... no wrong to survey before splashing the cash...

Thanks fellas, very helpful!

I've heard from friends that the prices displayed at shops are usually substantially marked up, in that a discount will almost invariably be given.

Is that true?

For a new watch in the RM5-6k range, Ball and Longines have very competent watches in their range. Check out their catalogues and websites to see what attract you, mostly, buy what you like first and foremost, not for the discounts the shops can offer on some items. Good luck! ;D ;D

Such an open ended question will only land you with endless answers based on personal preference of the forum members here.

I agree with Chris here to do your home work, go to the AD to test some of the ones that catches your eye, and come back here to let the good fellow members here  to advise you on what's good and what's better.

With that kind of budget, TS would probably have a different idea of what he want after visiting ADs..

Speak from very experience watch hunter
I totally agree, the first watch is just a beginning of journey. I was once like you
