What is the ideal no of watches for you ?
« on: October 08, 2014, 08:36:56 PM »

sometimes, I am curious how many watches we should own at any point of time ?

For me,  the collection should include a diver watch eg. submariner, AP; casual watches
eg. G-shock, suunto;  classic eg. IWC, JLC, etc, Pilot watch eg. Bell & Ross.. Daily work
watch  eg. Tag, omega, Ball, longines, maybe Quartz watches ;  luxury casual watches
eg. Panerai, BR, etc.

so for me, i guess the answer is 5-6 watches

what about you ?

I guess some people are contended with just one watch their whole life.
Some might be happy with 5 or 6 time pieces.
Some might have more than 10 or 20 or even 30 ... it's these guys who got bitten by the bug that collects watches because of their passion for these mechanical thing that ticks.
There is no fix formula on how many watch a person should collect.
Enjoy the ride bro while you're at it.

Having lots of watches is not the problem, finding the time to wear them all is.
Growing old is compulsory. Growing up is optional!

i think 5-6 is a good number but by the time we've accumulated up to that count, we'll be itching to get another 2-3 and then stop. But when we've done that, we'll probably be itching to get another 2-3 and really stop, which I think we'll be itching for more by the time we get to that.

Personally from experience you'd tend to trim the numbers with increasing age. So quality over quantity -just my take.

For me,

Automatic/Luxury watches: *This is directly proportional to your wallet. The thicker the wallet the larger number of collections.
? chrono watch
? classic  watch

Quartz
1 chrono
1 classic

Digital:
2 sports watches

From the beginning, i thought i want to have at least 12-15watches and stop there. Indeed a year later i had about that much of pieces..but when the buying frenzy stopped i started to thin out the collection, so i gave some of the watches to friends, relatives, and the better ones to my sons. Now I just want to have 3-4 pieces of quality watches ( and i have got two already) that i really love and have the time to wear , and enjoy them on my wrist.
1. a dress watch ( Glashutte original sixties Blue)
2. a diver (  Rolex SD4000)
3. a sport watch ( AP royal oak ? or a Pam 590 ? )
if i settled for three, that will be the collection .
May be a fourth when i hit the jackpot.
4. PP 5940 or Lange Langematik Perpetual Calendar ?
But i really hope i can be a one watch guy..

Average looks like 4 or 5 watches in collection
now tend to release a watch before getting a replacement
trying to manage the numbers as too many watches can't all have wrist time

furthermore the other half started nagging
he he

Looks like we are in the same boat.

I'm a Diver watch lover (as with most mates here, I think), so I would probably leave about 3-5 pieces of Diver watches in the collection. So many to choose from... how to limit to just 1 or 2 pieces? And newer, more attractive pieces are released ever so often.

For Aviation, everyone needs at least 1 piece of BR, so that's that.

For Dress, everyone needs a Datejust or some classic 3-hands simple dial watch, so that's that.

For Vintage, some likes it, some detests the TLC involved. But I think that everyone should at least have 1 piece to add some colourful story to their collection.

Most collectors probably would have at least 1 piece of G-Shock (Quartz), Chrono, Sports, and the likes, so I would propose that one buys a 10-slot watch and winder case; and try to limit within the number.
Watch hobbyist @ andywristwatches.blogspot.com. Current faves in my collection :

Rolex | Omega | Bell & Ross | Panerai | Seiko | G-Shock |

Less is more guys!

Ideally I am thinking 3 watches for me will do:

Patek Nautilus 5711 (diver/dress/hipster/cool)
Rolex Daytona (chrono/daily)
PP 5970G (my final piece!) I am dreaming!

If I have to be a one watch guy, I would pick 5970G!
