Should I stick with 42mm or go higher to 45.5mm?
« on: October 03, 2014, 12:04:47 AM »
I recently sold off a couple of watches, including a Seamaster Professional; and almost immediately have an itch towards the Seamaster Planet Ocean XL. My AD promised me a very special discount for the PO of my choice, and it looked like a no-brainer to get the PO. However, through time, I have also found that the watches that I tend to wear often are in the range of 40-42 mm; while those bigger than that tend to spend their time in the winder or got flipped off after a while. From the pictures below, do you think that I could pull off the 45.5mm PO, or should I stick to my current stable of 40-42 mm watches?

The most comfy of the lot in the ADs were the Liquid Metal Chrono, although that was at a RM10k premium compared to the s/s PO. Another consideration was the Pelagos, which was at a good size (42mm), in titanium and very tool-like with no bling at all (could be a pro and/or con depending on the situation). From the pics above, which do you think would suit me better? This would likely be another watch worn on rotational basis.

40-42 mm seems to be a good size, looking at the pics. However, only you can decide what's right for you. Wear what you are happy with..

All nice Omegas... difficult to choose eh. Don't get too big, the PO chrono is very thick.

IMHO, if your wrist is not big enough, 45.5mm will look like you are a kid and you steal your father's watch to wear.

If you got a wrist circumference of 7.5 inch of above; the 45.5 mm should look fine (I got a 7.5 inch wrist).

However, the best test is to wear it and see it for yourself. Happy hunting!

I got a wrist size of 6.6 inch and I fit well on a 45mm  Radiomir. I tried on the 47mm Luminor 372 and 47mm Rad 424 and it fits well too cause the shape is slightly different compared to the older models. So better you try them out and see for yourself is best and don use the number to help you decide your option straight away.

Good luck!

From the pictures below, do you think that I could pull off the 45.5mm PO, or should I stick to my current stable of 40-42 mm watches?

I feel the 45.5mm is rather large even for my fat wrist......

The PO is a rather tall watch, the 9300 POC is even taller!!

i had a 7.25" wrist and wore a 45.5mm PO XL...now my wrist shrunk to below 7" so my PO also has shrunk to the 42mm.
but also note that the measurements for PO that omega states includes the crown guard.
so based on bezel diameter...the XL is 43.5mm, while for the 42mm PO it is 40mm.
that is also why most feel the 42mm PO wears smaller, as they expect a 42mm watch, but in actual fact it wears pretty fine.

now if you are willing to top up abit more, a good compromise is the PO GMT :D

anyway...this is a 45.5mm on my wrist.

and this is 42mm...yes...not a great angle...

but as can be seen the main difference is not really the size, but something not so noticeable unless its on your wrist - the lug to lug length.
the XL is about 52mm, while 42mm is a very wearable 47mm.

Hi :)
Finally u pull a trigger on PO, either one size is nice, for me I settle at 45.5mm with my 7" wrist, 42mm seem small on me
Can't wait to see your review on it :)

Thanks for the insight. My other diver biggies included the 44mm Steinhart Ocean Forty-Four, 45mm Edox GMT-Class 1 Titanium, and 46mm Citizen EcoZilla; and this was how they looked adorning my wrist :

Honestly, they were probably too big on my wrist- to borrow the description from one of our fellow bros i.e. like borrowing your Daddy's watch; which was why I wasn't wearing them much. But I inadvertently purchased back biggies, although with non-diver variants such as 46mm Bell & Ross BR01-97 and 47mm SevenFriday P3-01.

I do like the BR though, and try to make it a regular wear. I like the PO being big and macho, but I don't want to have another white elephant in my collection. Hence, it was good to hear the view of the PO-owner. The high discount given on the PO was also a pull-factor towards it.

To be honest, I am most comfy with the 40-42mm diver genre, but getting the Pelagos would add yet another ETA 2824-2 (not that it's really a con as it's a dependable and robust Swiss workhorse) into the collection.

Hmmm, I guess I'll pop by the AD to have another try on 'em watches during this long weekend break. But I roughly know what I should get for a long-turn wear.

A fellow collector highlighted that the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean XL 2500D would be a more wearable and comfortable watch compared to the PO XL 8500, as the former has a thinner movement and therefore, would fit under the cuffs better.

I called my regular AD if they have the PO XL 2500D but was informed that they do not have ready stock- after all, the relatively insignificant new street price difference would have most collectors going for PO XL 8500 being an in-house movement.

Well, I am not a movement snob as could be seen from most of my watches bearing ETA or Selitta movements; so it wasn't a deal-breaker for me. Searching online revealed that the PO XL 2500D could be had for between RM13k - RM16k street price. And perhaps due to a stroke of luck and with the stars lined up perfectly, a gentleman from MWF had a relatively new example to let go for another Grail. It was a hassle-free meet-up with the gentleman and I spent some time detailing the watch last night.

I now have this piece of watch as featured in James Bond's Quantum of Solace (his was with white numerals) adorning my wrist, and I simply loved it.

So I got to have my cake and eat it. Planet Ocean XL 45.5mm - checked. Able to fit under cuffs easily - checked. A good price to boot - checked. What more could a WIS asked for
