« on: September 15, 2014, 07:36:56 PM »
Why do some rubber straps have vanilla smell?
Asked a local ad who said the smell is usually a mark of genuity from most reputable brands
Not sure how true is that. Anyone?

Oris rubber strap always smell like a vanilla according to the AD. From my experience, it is true ,my late Oris Williams F1 rubber strap still smell good after several years. I will wash/rinse with water it after wear my watch especially under sweaty condition before storing my watch at night. That is how I do to prevent the sweat stick on that rubber strap  :D

I've asked the Ball AD previously when I realized that my Trainmaster rubber strap had a sweet vanilla fragrance, and was given to understand that vanilla essence was added into the manufacturing mix for a more premium feel. When I bought a new Hydrocarbon replacement rubber strap at Ball recently, it had the same vanilla smell too. However, I don't get the fragrance from my Seiko or G-shock rubber straps. So I guess it's a differentiation action by some brands.

Actually, that vanilla smell in the rubber is not the extract of vanilla. That is artificial vanilla fragrance oil-ethanol based. 1litre of the good grade real vanilla essential oil is about USD5k now, more expensive than some Swiss watches.

All natural rubber will add this artificial vanilla fragrance oil to get rid of the natural rubber nasty rotten smell (if you tapping rubber tree before you will know that nasty smell), in fact all tyres got this vanilla smell too.

But for synthetic rubber because it is not natural rubber base, it wouldn't have the natural rubber nasty smell so no vanilla fragrance oil needed.

Hope the above clear the doubts. But its eye-opening experience how the AD salesman really know how to "talk" anything to market their watch.

Always wondered how long the smell would stay on my Chopard Mille Miglia. Even after rigorous activities, the vanilla smell is still there.

isofrane has strong vanilla smell, and i thought it was because its new. Now that i know the smell actually comes from the ingredients to make the strap itself, i have no problem wearing more often without the fear of losing the smell.. lol !!!

The smell is forever there as long as the rubber exist. Because the rubber is fully mixed well with vanilla fragrance oil. Unless the natural rubber want to save cost and use very little vanilla or not mixing well with vanilla.

I have just sniffed my Temple Island black rubber strap sold for £155 and cannot detect vanilla. At the same time kids are sick for the last week and have passed some germs to me sneezing to my face
