How did I end up with 2 watches within a week?
« on: September 10, 2014, 11:26:32 PM »
After much deliberation, I finally added a Rolex Sub C to my humble collection about a week ago.  I promised myself (and my wife) that I will stop buying watches until I reach 40.  Never anticipated that I will break that promise in just a few days.  I was in Bangkok for a business trip last week and stumbled upon the GS SBGA105G Limited Edition of 500pcs.  It was love at first sight as it is simply stunning in the metal.  The blue sunburst dial is out of this world mesmerizing! I could not resist the temptation and sadly, gave in to its lure.   :HammerHead:  Oh well, I once again promise that I will not buy any more watches until I reach 40.  Let's hope that I could keep my promise for more than a couple of days this time around! ;D

Here are the obligatory wrist shots:-

Hahahahahahaha...I made similar promises to my wife. No more watches for at least five years. But after that promise was made, two other watches was added. Good luck keeping that promise. Nice watches btw...

At this point, you can make all the promises you want and your wife is already bracing for the next incoming watch in the next couple of months. She knows you better than you know yourself.

I would make a similar promise to my better half and every time I broke that promise, she’d say “See, I told you…”
I could only put on a guilty smile…

Anyway, that SGA105G is gorgeous! Congratulations and enjoy it.

Just remember to do something nice for her later, like a romantic dinner, wearing your new GS!

Hahaha. Rolex vs. GS?  Hard to compare the two watches above but here are my general take on Rolex vs. GS:-
1) The Rolex bracelet with the glidelock system is in a class of its own.  The clasp is also top notch.  The GS bracelet is also pretty well finished with the 5pc link system, enabling each piece to be individually polished. The clasp is however a more simple affair.  All in all, Rolex probably shades GS in the bracelet/deployant department.
2) The attention to detail of the GS is incredible!  The polishing is of course remarkable and the finishing of the hands, case, markers and appliqués could not be faulted even under a 10x loupe. Rolex looks relatively utilitarian in comparison.
3) The dial finishing on the GS is something to behold.  Nothing really special about the Rolex dial.
4) The movement finishing on the GS is also gorgeous.  Movement finishing on the Rolex?  What finishing?

When it comes to attention to detail and overall finishing, Rolex is not even on the same page as the GS.  However, Rolex is not just a name game as it does have its own merits.  The Sub C on its own is very well made considering it is mass produced.  The bracelet, cerachrom bezel, smoothness of the crown and the iconic design makes it a very desirable proposition.  If you are one who appreciates the finer details in watchmaking, the GS will be right up your alley.

i think many of us have same experience... probably not within 1 week.. is within 1 year...

i think we should read the " advise on Buying watch " thread every day to remind ourself of
this expensive hobby
