Any good watch for kids under RM500
« on: May 23, 2014, 04:06:28 PM »
Any recommendation for good mechanical watches for kids under RM500 (if there is such a thing)? I paid a good RM100 for a Casio quartz but the watch is not up to par at all.

Try Orient or Seiko 5. Great value for money.

Will Seiko 5 or Orient too big for kids? What is the average diameter?

For kids, G-Shock lah. Kids at young age will not appreciate any mechanical or analog watches even if you give them Rolex they won't appreciate it. But if you give them G-Shock, they will treat it like their baby because its digital (Once me) :Laughing_on_floor:

I used to think that too buying G-shock or Swatch or even Ice watch. But if the price is almost the same, might as well get a mechanical watch. Save $ on batteries.

Servicing a mechanical watch could cost twice more than a set of new batteries..

Really depends on how old are your kids. Some parents will still refer to their sons and daughters as kids even when they are 30+.  ;D

Looks like many are in favour of the quartz.

Anyway, where can I buy Seiko 5 in Malaysia? PM me if you can't mention publicly.

Thanks.

Panlex, that is a Seiko 5, model number SNK805.  It's about 35 mm diamater so suitable for kids.  It has a display caseback as well  so your son might get a kick out of seeing the movement in action:

If not, plenty of change from your budget to get him a G-Shock, and you can keep the 5 for yourself (it's actually a really nice watch).

Jomashop currently has them for US$58, which is outrageously good value.

My kids below 10 usually just wear Swatch. Bought one 2-3 years ago and has not needed a battery change yet. They don't use it daily of course so it's in pretty good condition.

Teens I would suggest Orient over Seiko. I bought a Seiko 5 and my teen wore it a few months and the rotor came off. I also find Orient has much better quality over Seiko in the same price range.

For the price range, Orient's quality is definitely better than Seiko. For example, the differences between the bracelet of a Mako and something in its price range, maybe the Baby Monster. Mako definitely feels much more solid and heavy than the Baby Monster.

Couldn't agree to this, because my watch when I was a kid didn't really made an influence to me.
My first watch was a free gift, not even branded. Wore it for quite a long time and it ran out of battery and never had a watch ever since. Then when I was in high school, I always run late, thus I knew I needed a watch and bought a G-Shock myself, as it was a trend during that generation
Soon after, I did well for my PMR examination and was gifted a Seiko from my father, and that was when I started to have my attention towards watches.

My 5-yo son was having replacement Daiso watches that costed RM5 per piece- very cheap disposable units. Then he got his Thomas Japan watch and love it to bits. Then he started to want to wear my "watch with the G" as he calls it simply because of the illuminator light (although I think he wears the watches really smartly). Now, I got him a Gooberz military watch, which has illuminator and mini torch/pointer and he simply adores it, especially when he goes to bed. I think you could consider the Gooberz- it's got lights (kids dig it), water-resistant feature and is only around one-fifth of your budget.

A basic G-Shock, it's hardy and recognisable among kids.
