36mm dress watch, what's your thought?
« on: May 23, 2014, 01:26:53 PM »
Hello bros, today's trend seem like watches smaller than 37mm is consider small. Mostly are start with 40mm.
How many of you actually think that 36mm is still the best size for dress watch? Or am i the only one that going backward.. i found that 36mm actually more presentable than 40mm in the dress watch category.

Or maybe my view is different due to my small wrist? ;D

Even the size of 33mm-36mm dress watch are accepted by european, but i think mostly those who like vintage or classic dress watch.
Of cause, when you first seeing the 33mm-36mm side by side to 40mm, you will think it's small, look girlish.. but when you put on your wrist, it really look good. With 33-36mm, your watch straps actually sit better on your wrist, slightly curve, go around your wrist. not like 40mm, if fit on small wrist, the straps actually ended up 90 degree flat at both side due to the lugs already reach both edge of your wrist.

I also found that a 40mm dress watch, it might "accidentally" send wrong impression become a sport watch.

That's just my opinion...
i do have 40mm, 41mm, 42mm watch in my collection, i am referring a formal dress watch now.  ;D

Ermm, it pretty much depends on the size of your wrist and the design of your watch. For me, the min. I would go for would be 38mm but I have a relatively large wrist. 36mm should be ok for normal sized wrists as going any smaller will look kinda girlie.  It also depends on the design of the watch.  Watches with thin bezels, thicker lugs and lighter dial color (white, silver) will wear bigger than the size suggest. Also, square or cushion shape watches will wear a whole lot bigger than the number suggests.

I have a small wrist of 6.5inch,

36mm is the best dress watch size for me.

40mm is the best looking sport watch for me.

So it depends on your wrist as what the other member said.

Being wearing the the DJ 36mm for ages. Now switch to 40 GMT IIc, which feels slightly heavier, and more chances of knocking into things, compared to the 36mm. But both sizes fit ok.. ;D

36mm or less is still my preference.

But these days; the definition of formal wear is lost to most, so what do I know anyway.

I always believe that in any occasion, the attention should always be on the person, followed by the clothes and then finally the accessories.

Sadly at these day and age of "in your face" attention seeking and marketing, the reverse is the order of the day.

I got a 36mm. Even with a 7.5 inch wrist, it looks better as the curve of the strap look as if it is part of the cuffs.

I have a 6.5inch wrist as well. And I happen to think that the 36mm datejust is the perfect size for a dress watch. I am actively looking for one which is in decent condition. I have recently let go of a 42mm watch which I used to think was great and now just too big. The biggest watch that I have in my little collection is 40mm and I would think that it is the max size that I would wear. So in short...the 36mm is a great size, a great size indeed...

It really depends on a person itself, for the one that is a fan of big watch, maybe 36mm is a bit too small for a dress watch, but i would say that it really depend on your wrist size, isn't it abit funny for a masculine 180cm guy wearing a 36mm datejust ? For me i'll go for 41 to 44mm. Just a cent of mine

There are new Grand Seiko with size less than 40mm. But the price is much more expensive than its 42mm predecessor .

Is it signaling the reversal of trend from big size to smaller size?!?

36-38mm is the preferred size for a dress watch. 40mm is too large.

Maybe I am one of the exceptions. I have a 6.2 inch wrist but the smaller size I have is 39 mm and never had a 36 mm. Think that this size may be too small. Btw, I even have a 45 mm...

45mm is not for a dress watch right? The watch loses its elegance when it id too big

My dress watches are in the range of 39mm - 40 mm, nevertheless, I wear 45 mm to work occasionally (office attire).
