He is a natural rock-star!

I met an old friend...

had a great dinner...

talked all evening about his great-grandchildren, racing greyhounds, Lange and Albert Pellaton...

Admired his own creation, numbered 1/50 (wow)...

Thank you guys,

I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures. It was an exciting event to share, especially for all watch lovers alike here.

I apologize that I couldn't elaborate much on the first posting. As you can see, the event was held in what seems to be an underground wine celler of the hotel. We were surrounded by countless bottles of fine wine and chess, required to steady our hands during the watch making session but reduced my written vocabulary during the time of posting...

Hassan, the celler master comes from a long family generation of winemakers.

Kurt Klaus is a gem of a guy. Not only is he a fine watchmaker/inventor but he is a down to earth, humble, enthusiastic and friendly person. His achievements would have earned him the right to be as arrogant as he wish,  but here he is, before us a humble sweet old man who has all the childish enthusiasm and energy towards watch-making, and clearly not afraid to share and spread that passion.

of all days, my selphie lack of focus... oh well :)

There's a lot to tell, and such a story is best shared over a cup of coffee with inserts of body language and humorous demeanour to convey the spirit of the experience. I'll do my best here to highlight our encounter.

1. What he does for kicks..
... creating more prototypes of complications? Wrong. I read somewhere that he loves to collect Russian nesting dolls but he emphasize on his love for Greyhound racing dogs as a pass-time activity. This explains lots of web pics where he would walk his dogs around Shaffhausen during random encounter with fans. He would bring his dogs around Germany and Belgium for dog racing and in Europe, it is purely for entertainment and leisure and no gambling is allowed. He's clearly a dog person...

2. He's a Great-Grandfather.
... 2 great grandkids to be exact. He is reducing his travels to spend more time with his family nowadays.... Oh, and Mrs Klaus travels with him too...

3. Siderale Scafusia...
... His opinion on the piece: "It's an understated complication, though not an easy watch to use. IWC has the capability to make seven (7) pieces a year, provided they can find enough buyers for this... "

4. His favourite modern IWC (besides PPCs)
... IW5463...... Can't argue with that.

5. He's a foodie...
... He was trying to control his diet, but he did managed to finish 2 whole steak fillet that evening, as his way of complimenting the chef....

and I think he finished this faster than me....

6. His favourite part of the PPC...
... is the moon-phase, he actually uses it. On a seperate note, he remembers fondly on how he developed the first portofino IW5251.. something that we both are passionate about...

7. His thoughts of Albert Pellaton...
... the comments that would always comes from Albert was - "this is very good, but I think you can do better...."
... "since back then, we believe firmly in creating a watch for life"...

8. His thoughts on German watchmaking....
... great pool of talent, and he would elaborate on how he had to drive from Schaffhausen to Dresden weekly to train 2 engineers for Lange back in those days with JLC parts on modern watchmaking. He proudly claims on conceptualizing and conceived the idea of Lange 1 (KK is sort of like the biological father of the ALS signature model, in a way) as well as the sax-o-matic.

9. When I showed him a picture of a Pallweber pocket watch...
... he explained that it was one of his earlier task when he was a young watch-maker that he had to repair numerous Pallweber pocket watches, one of the more difficult mechanism to fix. He would add that he was successful in fixing all of them...

10. He happens to have good selling skills...
... "Vat do u mean you don't ave a Perpetual Kalender, come young man, letz try dis on u!"....  :o

Thanks for reading...

He he, no lar. Not that crazy. I just happen to live here.

how to get this kind of invitation huh?  :Praying:

I've invested time and energy in creating a good relationship with the IWC crew here, most of them whom I know on a personal level. In fact, my transaction/purchase (only 1) with them is insignificant compared to the other clientèle they have, and I'm certainly not worthy of say being in a VIP list. I trust that they, in their goodwill, recognize some of us who are true fans and hence privileged enough to be part of this close knit appreciation event.
