What do you think of this watch for my 40th birthday
« on: May 06, 2014, 03:34:38 PM »
  or

I tried this not so long ago and I like it because it's something different from my current pieces. However, i'm worried about servicing (for example local AD decided not to carry FP Journe anymore and now servicing of any FPJ watch means to send to Hong Kong boutique which is really inconvenient) and the watch may be a piece of junk if the company closes down. This will be my first indie timepiece and i'm uncertain if i'm prepared to take the risks given that it's priced pretty high for a titanium watch. I've been thinking if I should get this piece or perhaps something mainstream like Omega DSOTM/IWC Port Perp Cal or the brown limited edition vintage ingenieur/GO Panoinverse with date which is more pocket friendly. I also fancy the new Omega Lunar Dust but the watch will likely be available in 2015 which means I won't be able to get "special" watch for my 40th birthday.

My ultimate grail is a RM10 or RM30 but i'm "ball-less" to pull the trigger and i'm sure I'll get a earful if I get it (for a long long time).

I know I've to decide eventually but I think it's a good idea to get some thoughts from friends here.

Cheers

James

I was just browsing the DeBethune collection in Sg and I must say they look incredible in the metal!  Extremely contemporary with an unmistakable design language.  The DB27 is a gorgeous watch!  However, at that pricing, there will be tons of other mouthwatering options. The Lange 1 comes to mind.  However, the DB27 is absolutely gorgeous and I would not hesitate to buy one if I could afford it.  However, there are the usual risks associated with buying an Indie brand.

Omega, IWC, GO all in the same breath as deBethune?
James, you already have a very impressive and esoteric collection.
I think you'd be diluting it with any of the Omega/IWC/GO choice.
You should not worry abt the deBethune servicing.
Whichever watch you own, you still need to send it back to the manufacture e.g. your HW?

That's just my opinion…..
good luck and if its the deBethune, I'd love to see it in the metal…. the others? not so much as I can see those anywhere, anytime and on most people's wrists…incl. my own as I have watches from all those 3 brands..good solid brands no doubt but lacking the panache of the deBethune…or best said by the French…je ne sai quoi

For your 40th milestone watch it has to be something really special…
You can get a Omega/IWC/GO for those other lesser occasions….

Personal taste and preferences evolve over years, hopefully not 1 full circle otherwise it means we haven't learnt a single thing.

James,

I have try that particular piece many times and every time I do the love dwindle. I would suggest give it a few more try as you said it's a big leap. Money is one thing but ruining a special occasion of buying a wrong watch is traumatic.

While you at it. Have you take a look at Moser?

Thanks Tyler. Yes I should try it a few more times again. I like Moser but i'm looking for an automatic movement with date. Moser doesn't offer that as yet in any of their range.

Thanks Joseph. I'm still hunting for that "special" watch...

HW - at least I know it's under Swatch Group which has a service centre here so it's a bit more assuring.

Thanks for all the advice guys...

Here's an idea, why not wear something as old as you?

Not necessarily a vintage but 70s theme mechanical watches.

GO Panorama Date 70s or TAG Monaco are just examples...

If you can fork out for a rm or debehtune , I see no reason not buying a pp 5970 or 5270.i personally prefer the 5970 more and at 40 , 5970 will mark a new stage of life :p

5970 maybe easily attainable by you, but, I have owned a series of 4 PP, but, the AD still bypassed by request for a 5070 or 5970!

Great, spider boy. The local AD seems to have pigeon eyes, only cater for the cashless so called VIP?! Can you pm the HK's grey dealer contact to me pls, tqsm. Seen some in the States, but, annoyed by its 9% Sales Tax! Btw, how much did you pay for the 5970J?

The DB is outstanding but, if I'm being honest, it is way too big for your wrist.  Sorry.
