It was Speedy that brought me into the world of horlogy.
But, am speechless when I see this 'new' Speedy released in Basel 2014.

Laser engraved PVD dial
Titanium case
18k gold hands, markers and matching bezel
Same old calibre 1861
Nato ........  ???

  • Success. It's a mind game.
Wickedly cool... and I thought it was hard to make the SM any more enticing.

this particular Speedmaster going the B&R phantom and Hublot route?
Omega now becoming followers of trend ?

Up until now the Omega re-issues looked good........
Personal taste and preferences evolve over years, hopefully not 1 full circle otherwise it means we haven't learnt a single thing.

Me too, it was Omega Seamaster brought me to horology, ever since then, I buy here and there, sell here and there. And somehow one of the Omega always in my case. The Speedy is classic

On first glance, I like how this one looks but the more I look at it, the more I feel it has somewhat of an identity crisis. It's on a NATO strap and looks like a tool watch or one that is suited for casual wear but then it has a gold bezel, with gold hands and indices. Hmmm.. a rather odd combination, although admittedly it looks good.

Looks horrible! What happened to Omega? This colour combination is sacrilegious as it completely ruins the dial legibility which used to be a strong feature of the Speedy :-(

OMEGA held an exclusive event to launch the OMEGA Speedmaster Apollo 11 45th Anniversary Limited Edition with probably the world’s most famous living astronaut and brand ambassador Dr. Buzz Aldrin. The two-part event included a media reception at the OMEGA Boutique in Orlando located at the Mall at Millenia followed by an exclusive private dinner at the Kennedy Space Center.

During the private dinner reception, OMEGA displayed a history of Speedmaster watches where several guests had their picture taken with Dr. Aldrin. In addition, Dr. Aldrin spoke about his partnership with OMEGA which has lasted more than 45 years. The astronaut wore the OMEGA Speedmaster on the lunar surface on July 20, 1969 during the landmark Apollo 11 space mission. The OMEGA Speedmaster became the first watch to be worn on the moon.

The Speedmaster has been the official watch of NASA’s manned flight program since 1965. Since then, Dr. Aldrin has worn a large collection of OMEGA watches including the OMEGA Seamaster Diver which he wears on his deep sea diving trips.

“I am reliving a lot of great memories tonight. It is hard to believe that my long-time friend and colleague Neil Armstrong and I were launched into space for the Apollo 11 mission by a Saturn V rocket from this exact location 45 years ago.”

The OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Apollo 11 45th commemorates the first lunar landing and celebrates its link to the iconic chronograph that was part of the adventure. Recalling the colours of the moon and the Apollo 11 lunar and command modules, this Limited Edition timepiece features a 42 mm completely brushed case with a touch of gold.

The case is crafted from lightweight grade 2 titanium - inspired by the troves of titanium ore that cover the Moon. This timepiece has been produced in an edition limited to 1,969 pieces; reflecting of course the significant year that man first walked on the moon.
