Which Rolex would you choose?
« on: March 25, 2014, 03:20:59 PM »
Hello fellow watch kaki's!

I am a soon to be Rolex owner, the search was a tiring and interesting one. I went to 4 ADs and 3 grey dealers in my quest to find the Rolex sports model which I liked the most.

Among the other models I considered were:
116610LV (Hulk)
116710BLNR (Batman)
114060 (No Date)

Unfortunately I was shit out of luck, all the AD's I went to did not have stock for the Hulk, Batman, Sub Date and GMT2 (most had the No Date in stock). I eventually found the Sub Date and GMT2 at a grey dealer and compared both side by side. Honestly I was completely torn between the two.

As both were pre-owned pieces, I wanted my first Rolex to be a new one. So I continued my hunt to search for the best possible price for the 2 models. Some AD's put me on the waiting list, most wanted to charge a premium price. In the end I found one (who is a mwf commercial poster too) who could order a brand new one for me at a really good price.

I banged my head on the wall, considered the pros and cons of both the Sub Date and GMT2c and flipped a coin between choosing either one.

I have placed a deposit and am now waiting anxiously for the piece to arrive, in the mean time let's have some fun by guessing which model I eventually chose / which model you think I should get.  :Jumping: :Jumping:

Hi there,

I recently went through the exact same experience u did and that was about a month back.

No AD i went to has any stock and the ones who did told me they had it, are keeping it for after rolex increase the price ( this was for the batman).

I finally found the batman at a grey dealer and tried it on only realizing it wasn't the one for me plus the they are selling at a very high premium.

If you are still deciding, do consider trying it on your waist first the reality vs Picture can be very different.

If you had already bought one, i am guessing the Hulk :) cause its the best looking one to me yet.

Congrads btw

Yes yes, I eliminated the Hulk and Batman because none of them had stock for me to try.

I could have ordered it but I am not sure if the color would be right for me. I did manage to try a 16610LV (black dial / green bezel) didn't quite like it.

So in the end it was a coin toss between the GMT2 and SUB Date.

Also another interesting thing is, around Malaysia I usually see people wearing Subs but when I was in HK every where I went most people I saw were wearing GMT2c, like even the sales guy for bonjour was wearing a GMT2c. I did inquire about watches, AD's in HK are willing to give 5% discount on Sub Date, whereas KL it is premium price. In Msia one of the AD I went to offered 5% off on GMT2c but they didn't have stock, none of them gave discount on Sub Date.

My vote? 116610LV aka Hulk.

Batman looks interesting but the premium is not worth the look. I've seen it on wrists and tried it on. Absolutely not worth the asking premium.

FYI, the Hulk has been around a lot longer than Batman and prices look stable. Since you're focussing only on Rolex, you appear to be someone who abhors speculation. If you want to save a few K, then stick with 116610LN but buy at a discount from RRP.

Question is, do you want to join the crowd? I've seen black Sub Date on wrists and it's not as amazing as seeing the Hulk.....

Oh.. and the colour of the Hulk? Sometimes almost black but in good lighting, a very dark green and in the sun, an amazing green shade and you can just make out the sunburst pattern.

The GMT2c has a very nice bezel (or read as attention getting!) and maintains value if bought at the right price. We all know how important status is to people in HK (and value as well!)

I have no doubt in my mind the Hulk (or any Rolex for that matter) is an excellent piece. Thing is I have already made up my mind and when it came down to the wire it was a choice between the 116610LN and 116710LN. There was a moment when I had both on my wrist and still couldn't decide.  :Laughing_on_floor:

It was only after a cooling down period could I decide which one I wanted more. I will of course explain my rationale later when I finally get the piece, for now lets just see what the popular vote is.

For wearing it everyday, Sub Date no doubt, as GMT2C is scratch magnet due to its partially polished bracelet.

But comparing side-by-side, I prefer the look of the GMT2C.

I just recalled over the weekend saw one chap wearing a GMT I noticed the bracelet with so many scratches and is no longer like it used to be.

I was wondering if this is how he care for his GMT.

i would go for the GMTII.
IMHO it is the most beautiful Rolex to date.
With its GMT bezel and maxi dial, it looks bigger than its size(40mm)
the only down side for me is the center polish link.

Looking at this, you already have a dress watch, pilot, diver, beater and tool watch. What you don't have is a world timer and I would think that it is the GMT that you have in mind...

For a 3 hands Rolex with date... I would always go for the Yatchmaster preowned. What's not to like? Platinum bezel and dial, rounded polished case and the most comfortable model to wear among all the diver type Oyster cased rolexes.

As for the duke out between the maxi cased sub date and GMT, I would take the GMT for it's cheaper price and added function. Not that many companies out there does an independent detached hour hands like Rolex.

Always nice on the wrist

Good that while opinions were against your choice, you still went for it. That indicated you really like it.

Thanks!

The reasoning was pretty simple:

1. I love the Sub, but I think it should be simple. Planning to get a 2 liner no date sometime down the road (No Cyclops!)
2. The GMT2 is fantastic and has a nicer wrist presence (read: looks bigger)
3. I can scratch a GMT complication off my "To have list"
4. With the Cyclops the clean dial of the Sub looks a little off, whereas the GMT2 is already "busy" by design with the bezel and the 24hr hand
5. That Bi-Directional bezel is a simple and elegant innovation, you can tell 3 time zones just by rotating the bezel
6. The detached hour hand is great when travelling (although tbh I don't really travel between timezones that often... yet)
