Hello, asking for advice.
« on: February 08, 2014, 09:03:03 PM »
Hi, I am new to watches, couldn't call myself a watch enthusiast, thus i am asking everyone for a few advices for my first luxury watch.
I'm still a student, working as a part-time for a watch, so my budget is slightly low, a merely RM5000.
I have a few options,

Maurice-Lacroix pontos day-date. The original price was around RM7500 but its reduced to [mod : pls dont post discounted rate on the forum].
SevenFriday P1. Around RM3500, not sure if its a good buy and worthy of its price.
Ball trainmaster eternity. Original price was around 7000 and is reduced to [mod : pls dont post discounted rate on the forum].

Would be thankful if anyone would suggest me to go for something else, or advices on the watches listed above.
Thanks a million.  :)

Tough question. Because your budget is quite tight and I understand your a student so its quite hard.

But if I am in your shoes I would get a G-shock. IMO its trendier and much cheaper and better then the brands you mentioned.

I would then save up to over 17k+ or so and will be scouting the second hand market for a mint Rolex Submariner. And if you somehow have to sell off your subby in the future you won't be losing too much money. Where as those brands you mentioned are very bad in the secondary market also bad in terms of desirability and recognition.

I already have a G-Shock. In fact, I have a few other watches like Seiko and Fossil.
This one is the first luxury watch I'm buying, would be investing on more watches in the future i hope :P

I,personally don't believed in buying watches that have a good resale value vs. buying a watch that I really like.
If you restrict yourself to only those "good" resale watch, you'll missed out on owning a lot of really great watches out there.
If you have a budget of 5k,than scout around for a watch that has a good discount to meet that budget.
In the mean time work hard(and smart) to increase your financial status so that you'll be able to collect your watches along the way.
MY motto, when the going gets tough, work harder you owe it to yourself to have the best things in life.

hi,
Not to rub it in but all of us have been where you are now.
As a student all I wore were Seikos, Citizens, some Swiss brands that have gone bankrupt like Pagol, Titoni (not the same Titoni today) and Omega which was loaned to me by my brothers…
Having hindsight now I realize that I made many mistakes in my watch acquisition journey. Of coz we never had the advantage of internet to get info so easily.
Also there weren't so many ADs and pre-owned shops like today.

My advise is.. RM 5000 doesn't buy you much nowadays.
Since you already have Seikos (they are good watches for their price points- I have 9 regular Seikos and some GS as well so I know what I'm talking abt)
I'd suggest you save up to abt RM 10K and buy a good pre-owned piece like a Rolex, IWC, Omega to start your journey.
Keep those for good and add on better pieces as you become more financially strong.
Just so you know I disposed of >40 watches over my entire watch journey losing a lot of money in the process and all those watches disposed, were bought BECAUSE I didn't know better then… about movements, abt the actual history of the so-called watch makers (mind you I didn't use the word 'manufactures') and I was taken in by all the advertising hype and 'star' endorsements in the magazines...

Just my opinion…. IF I were you , that is...

I wish I had someone to advise me when I first started…30 yrs ago

I don't know your personal situation but when I was a student I spent what little money I had partying and chasing hot young poon.  Not sure why you'd need a fancy watch - the girls don't care.  You only get to be a student ONCE (unless you're Rodney Dangerfield).  Don't waste your cash on watches!

Buying a watch depends very much with what you want. Whether you want to sell it off at a later date or whether you want to keep it. If you plan on keeping it, get something you like. Go for resale value if only you want to trade it off later.

LOL! Didnt know you could do so much with RM5000 these days. Much to learn we have from Enkidu Master. In this one strong is the Force.

Students these days and those of yore days are like a world apart. My watch then was probably RM50.00 only...

Mike, go get your G-Shock and G-spots! Have fun!

But if you really want to buy a nice watch to reward yourself, choose one that you fancy and fits your taste/character. You're still young... it's ok to follow your whims and indulge yourself once in a while (or thrice according to Enkidu).

talking from hindsight…
If your wrist is not too big, you can start off with the following pre-owned
Rolex 6694.. 34mm.. you can get a pre-owned for between 5-6K but its manual wind, no quick set date but it is a classic and will never go out of style.
IWC Mk XV or XVI abt 5-7K depending on condition.
Omega for RM 5-7K will probably be ETA based 2500 movement models, not the in-house 8500 or 9300
I didn't recommend a pre-owned Grand Seiko as most ppl can't accept a 'Seiko' costing 4-5 figures… but preowned is pretty hard to find anyways
That's another great watch where I own 6 pcs, bought brand new

The above is a good start, better than most of us when we started…

there are too many 'nice looking' watches but watches with solid proven in-house movements and that will never be out of style, are few and far in between….

No, sir, please don't get me wrong. I have no intentions or whatsoever to argue at all. I'm here to plainly ask for a few advices on watches.
It really is good advices from everyone, and I really appreciate it.
I haven't made up my mind, I am considering on everybody's advice.
Just, IF I made up my mind at last to get a watch instead, which one is the best one for me to buy?

I'd fo with none from your list to be brutally honest.

Instead, I'd go with either a) pre-owned Omega Seamasters or, b) Longines Legend Diver or, c) a pre-owned Ball engineer hydrocarbon

But that is just me if I had RM5,000.00 and I intend to buy a watch.

Your ONLY job in this world is to make sure that you are happy

Then the LLD with date goes for 4.6k pre owned or about 5.5k new.. I have the same dilemma when I started...then I just read and look (repeat that many many times) before I finally buy my watch....
