Leather Straps !!! Humidity !!! Sweat !!! Solutions???
« on: February 08, 2014, 02:07:29 PM »
Hey guys!

I been thinking about this. Since it is humid in Malaysia and it's damn hot outside how do you take care of your leather straps.

Do you just replace it with cheaper strap? Some pieces like the AP ROO come with some super sexy straps. But replacing those worn out strap with the original strap cost big $$$$! AP ROO fans what do you guys do?

I don't have any watches on a strap in my collection and was wondering how you guys deal with the humidity and sweat.

I always replace original leather straps with affordable aftermarket ones
As I love watches I don't believe in wearing ori leather straps on a basis especially
The Malaysian weather

Wah good idea man! use the aftermarket strap to preserve the ori strap. But the thing is the piece might not look as good bro. Ori strap looks damn nice. But sadly when the thing gets worn out it sucks......

Gents, my very humble opinion is this, why bother with how the humidity affects your straps? Would you bother how your car tyre gets worn out the way you drive your car when you drive a Porsche or Ferrari? While I understand that the straps are not cheap, they do last at least five years, maybe more if you rotate your watches. So stop worrying about something not worth
worrying about and enjoy your watches...

Are you married? Make sure you don't overuse that commodity too in case of resale...

The ROO straps are quite hardy as long as you don't immerse it in water or swim with it. To me, getting them changed is a small amount relative to the watch. The inside of the strap appears to be lined with fabric so wiping with a damp cloth seems to clear up any sticky feel. I don't get into extremely sweaty sports with it on so can't say what would happen if you're soaked in sweat.

Man your rich. I am poor lol.

How often do you have to change the strap? I am thinking about adding a strap piece to my collection someday.

Have not had it long enough to gauge wear and tear. I'd say it pretty much depends on how often the watch is worn and how sweaty it gets

Hi theseira, you can opt for rubber strap n it will also last longer than the leather. the ori  rubber strap from ap only cost a fraction( abt rm 700+ for the deployant clasp fit ) from their leather, so does those from Pam. regards tony.

My advise would be just enjoy it. I mainly have leather strap watches. Only one watch with rubber strap for certain wet and dirty occasions.

1) I try to rotate my leather strap watches and let them 'rest' in between
2) I try to wear them not too tight to allow some air space between my skin and the lining to allow sweat to dry quickly
3) Deployant will typically expand the lifespan of the leather as compared to tang buckle (less tendency to bend the strap and create cracks). Having said that, I still have tag buckles on my dress watch as they still look sexier...

Leather straps are natural materials. The longer you use it, the more comfortable it becomes, just like a shoe. Some OEM leather are expensive, but spread out the cost of the leather strap over the number of days wearing it (say a lifespan of 5 years) and it's really nothing. I think it is worthwhile given the comfort and how good it looks.

Needless to say, if it is an expensive watch, the price of the leather strap is usually insignificant compared to price of the watch. If it's for resale purpose, the main criteria is the condition of the watch, not the strap.

I personally prefer straps after my sweat,it'll look more season and comfortable for daily use,but if you mind, may consider to replace it with after market or ori rubber straps which I do this often. And I'm a diver and I used to dived with my leather straps, can say after few dives into salt water it'll become more hard and size may from 26mm become 24mm :p, but I bough some olive oil that really help to prolong the straps, and will apply it after each dived with my leather straps.

You may try to search those oil or grease online to apply it once a week,I believe it give you an extra coating to prolong and protect your straps from sweat and water.

Hope this help...:) have a nice day

Olive oil seriously  ??? ???

Any chance you could post some pics of your strap and advise how long you had the piece for.

Interesting about the oil treatments.. so instead of sweaty smelling straps, we have oily, olivey-sweaty smelling straps??

I guess a baby smelling strap would be better..

Perhaps, some baby powder after baby oil will take care of the oiliness. ;D

I wash my watch everytime after i wear it hard either leather or stainless steel i do the same. Dry it using cloth and apply leather care which you can buy from shoe store montly.

For normal wear i just clean it using wet cloth. If super hot day, i will choose to wear those with s/s strap.
