Are watches important to men?
Definitely.
Girls can wear accessories on their wrists like bracelets, bangles and so on.
Middle aged... well matured men do not wear bangles and bracelets as accessories as they serve no purpose and look tacky with working attire, professional environment and even formal occasions...
So we have watches... they serve a purpose, looks good, and fit in the whole wardrobe.
I for one do not feel comfortable not wearing any watches... it feels naked... even I know that I can just whip out my phone and check the time... a watch on the wrist is still better.
Terrenceterrence "seriously, i think buying a watch for it's secondhand value is like getting married and thinking about divorce at the back of your mind."

This thread is going to ruffle a lot of feathers....

 :Laughing_on_floor:

Hahaha....if anyone feels hurt or has his "feathers ruffled" by all the bantering in this forum, he must have a real bird brain.

But don't ever ruffle the feathers of the big birds like the cassowary, eagle, condor etc....

I rate (luxury) watches in the same group as fine wines/whisky, sports cars, gourmet's foods, collectable antiques, holiday homes, mistresses  :P......etc

Not the important and essential items, but life will not be as 'interesting' without (some of) them.

In my humble opinion, there are roughly 2 types of men who buy watches; first type will buy a watch that is liked by others (i.e recognizable brand like Rolex, Panerai and Tagheuer), the second type will buy a watch that they like.

Maybe if I'm spending 20k on a watch I might as well buy something that people know right? Or not.

As long as you do not mention the the sacred "P" brand, it'll be fine.

What do you think of people who were these?
In no particular order

1. Glashutte Original
2. Omega with Co-axial
3. A.Lange and Sohne
4. Phillp Dufour
5. Christophe Claret
6. Sarpaneva
7. MB&F
8. Breguet
9. Blanqpain
10. Jaquet Droz
Each handmade watch is sold with part of the watchmakers soul. The effort to make the watch perfectly flawless like a gem, takes a lot of the watchmakers concentration. You pay for the "Loving attention" they give to each movement and watch.

And as for yours truly.............

Functionally to tell time - yep, it's crucial to be punctual with just about the only punctual thing in Msia -movies that always start on time
Aesthetically to look, feel good - nah, my bald pate does a better job
Insanely to have sold a kidney to buy one - nah, could do with another kidney for yet another
Financially to harvest a return from a lifelong collection from a Christie's auction - yeah, just enough to cover Christie's cardiac-arresting fees

1. GO - good taste. dare to be different. Refined workmanship.
2. Practical fella.
3. ALS - sick of Patek.
4. Big show off. Does not mind if the watchmaker is the other kind.
5. Complicated man.
6. He is a wolfman. What's the big deal with a moon face on a watch. Beats me. No practical reason whatsoever.
7. Child play. Who wears a watch which looks like spaceship and worse u wouldn't want a panda sitting on your wrist. Silly man. Dreamer.
8. One who don't give sh!t about resale value. Wears what he likes and he knows what is Quality. Refined man.
9. Follower. Just because Fifty Fathoms. Can be judged as those who wear Breguet.
10. Dunno anything about watches. Follower. No one wears JD anymore. If the brand still around or struggling?

Apart from mwf members I know, none of my other friends have the remotest interest in watches or horology.

I do notice a certain trait however.
Most people whom I know love watches are generally the mechanically minded, DIY, home fixit types who also love cars, cameras and any other hobby that involves mechanics.
There are always exceptions of course e.g. almost all my photo kakis have no interest in watches too.

The friends I have with no interest in watches are similarly disinterested in the other items mentioned above. They seem to be more earth bound such as golf, property investments, stocks, travel, fine dining.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Personal taste and preferences evolve over years, hopefully not 1 full circle otherwise it means we haven't learnt a single thing.

i like watches and cars, not DIY and other mechanics. i like property and share investments, not travelling and fine dining, and no golf for me.

So i think quite difficult to conclude from here. ;)

I think I can be the exception? I love photography...I love talking about property investment. I love golf, I also love tennis...I don't love cars as a hobby as I look at cars as a tool. And in Malaysia, a nice car attracts too much unwarranted attention. I like travelling and I love a good meal paired up with a good drink. May it be whiskey(single malt only) or wine...I also enjoy the occasional beer.

Maybe I am just weird...LOL

As for me...I think I might have too many interests which is a really bad thing to my account balance.  :Blue:  Let's see, apart from horology, I am also crazy about traveling, fine dining, photography, cars, hi-fi, fashion, stock investment, Lego!, home deco, movies, music...etc!  This is bad.
