The way I hear it, Casio G-Shocks and Pathfinders (Pro-Trek here) are very popular with the regular troops in the Middle East and Afghanistan.

However, elite units like SAS, SEALs and Rangers do not use them in the field. It seems that the electronic beeps, alarms and flashing lights (dial illumination) are things that will get you killed in high threat situations. Soldiers have enough things to do as it is than to remember to switch off their watch alarm. Elite units prefer to use Luminox (H3) or similar type watches, basic three hand dials to time themselves. Anything more sophisticated, they literally do not have time to use.

Just something I remembered reading on the net on some watch forum.

I like the latest G-Shocks. I especially like the huge new GX-56.

My Casio GS-1050:

I like it because it is incredibly functional and makes a great travel watch (the digital interfaces allow easier access to all the features than if it was all analog), and it has a solid steel case with screw-down caseback.  Just a great all-round watch.

i checked one of this out today at g-factory.
walked away completely dissapointed.
the UV light is ok, typical modern casio either 1s or 3s duration...no more 5s like older  g-shocks.
what bugged me was the lume on the hour hand didnt light up, perhaps uneven lume application...so needless to say in the dark its pretty damn hard to tell the time.
the pic shown above makes it look better than what i saw...

I like G-Shocks but I've been rather hesitant about jumping in. There are just soooo many models! I'm afraid I'll get obsessed and start buying more and more!! Hahahahaha! I can turn into quite the watch slut.

Look for the GA110 collection, a great place to start for you. Lots of variation, mostly very colorful, even the black and white variant is cheerful. (Btw, that is called the maharishi LE, recommend you to get that too). I also take note that you like big watches, so they will suite your taste too.
