Patek Philippe - To my son
« on: December 12, 2013, 05:23:15 PM »
Hey gents

I recently recalled a Patek Philippe commercial some time ago titled to my son. Just wondering if any MWF members watched this commercial. Please share your thoughts. If you haven't please check it out on YouTube  8)

I take it that you gentlemen here will leave a watch to your son one day?

Personally I think it is a great idea to leave something that was once representative of you to your next generation. As for me...I am still thinking of which watch to leave for my boy...or does it have to be a PP...(then I will have to save like crazy for one)

I'd like to think that one day my future son will inherit his grandfather's PP (ad hopefully one from his dad, too!). I wonder how watch tastes would change by then...

I have 4 sons, so the idea of leaving them one Patek each is going to be an expensive one  :o

I think it would be safe to assume the Calatrava range will not change dramatically. Size however might be a different matter but seeing how Archie Luxury with his big wrists can still wear that small Patek and it still looks good

If you pass a Patek to your son and he did not know Patek, it would be your fault.  :D

Great advertisement tagline if you ask me. Makes the asking price more justifiable if you ask me....  :HammerHead:

To be brutally honest, if (a big IF) I do buy a Patek, it will be for all for myself.  :Dancing_banana: :Dancing_banana:

My children can work their @$$ off to get their own (if they are interested in watches at all) just like their old man.

I find PP watches are absolutely gorgeous and has all the authority to command such price and it speaks for itself.

I don't need their tag line to convince me more.

Nice PP ads.. except for the Twenty-Four. Why, I wonder, associate PP with debauchery (a young lady losing her PP at a sex party)? ??? I may have perceived the ad wrongly, tho. :-\

we r also advised to Begin your own tradition  8)

so need not worry abt passing it to ur son(s) (usually as advertised) or daughter(s)

u can keep it yourself even if u r single all the way  ;D

so u can begin ur own tradition in whatever way u want it to be. sky is the limit

well covered by their taglines in all phases of life

I doubt whether my sons would appreciate a PP. At this stage they would choose a G Shock any day.

Agreed. This is the mentality we should have. Parents nowadays are overly pampering their children. They think they are doing them a favour but in fact, they are spoiling them. This we have to learn from Warren Buffett.

Yes and no.  If you had grown up truly poor, you would understand the opportunity that arises from having a wealthy family.  Yes, a PP is a crazy OTT gift, and is definitely spoiling, but it's not really any different from, say, paying the deposit so your kids can afford a house.  I would be thrilled if, one day, I am able to help out my child financially in a way that my parents just couldn't help me.

I agree to a certain extent.
To help your child financially is a noble thing... only if it's done in the right way.
Those who grew up in financial difficulty will want to do much for their kids like they never did get in the past.
It's understandable.
But I am a firm believer that helping out financially is a dangerous thing.
As it can lead to a pattern and kids taking things for granted.
I would however give them a loan... with interest of course...  ;D

As to watches, I might leave 1 or 2 for them and that's it...
The rest I might sell it off a couple of years before going 6 feet under and take a long vacation with the money.
Selfish? Maybe... but the kids will need to learn to be a little independent and work hard for what they want.
Terrenceterrence "seriously, i think buying a watch for it's secondhand value is like getting married and thinking about divorce at the back of your mind."
