For GS, you can get lots of poison from this forum (i supposed u already poisoned by recent beautiful reviews by the moderators.. ;D)

For Rolex, it is a no-brainer. every collector should at least have one.

For other brands, accumulate as you make more money to please yourself...

I think the Zenith Captain (Elite) is a very, very nice entry level timepiece. Check it out, after the usual discounts, it doesn't cost as much as many people imagine. On the other hand, IMHO the GS is for hard cores and die hards (you know, those with the Pandora Box's lid blown away and have no chance whatsoever to turn back in this life or the next  ;D), so it's better you ease yourself into it instead of making it one of your maiden great watches in your collection.

As an owner of a few GS apart from other Swiss & German watches,  I can only recommend that you have to be 100% sure that a GS suits your personality and therefore you will very unlikely sell it.
If you have any doubt whatsoever, then I do not recommend a GS for you because if you decide to flip it, the demand and therefore re-sale value of GS in Malaysia is still very poor not unless you decide to sell it in Japan or Taiwan where it is held in high esteem.

If you google enough, you will find that its either an undiscovered, undervalued gem to some but to the majority, it is just a ridiculously over-priced Seiko. That is a choice only you can make.

I wouldn't agree with what Enkidu says abt being hard core. Most GS owners I personally know appreciate and own other fine high end Swiss and German watches as well.

GS like Panerai or Rolex are just different flavours. I have a GS but I still continue to buy other brands of watches other than Rolex and Panerai. I am not a die hard for any brand for the matter. I am a sucker for technically sound and well made watches within my affordability.

Hmm... guess gonna have real headache choosing then... lol... after thinking hard, came down to three models "SO FAR"  :Laughing_on_floor:
Zenith Captain Power Reserve (white dial), GS - SBGH001, or a pre-owned datejust II - 116300 (silver dial)

...
To be fair, Seiko has not put in the same effort to blanket advertise the GS line in the mainstream international media outside of Japan (and maybe Korea and Taiwan), so most people on seeing one would just assume it's "just a Seiko." It's a brand awareness thing.
 ??? ??? ???

In fact, if and when Seiko decides to go wholly international with it and challenge the top Swiss luxury watch brands, I would think Seiko should spin off the Seiko GS line into a separate name like how Toyota "spun off" the Lexus line (while still owning it) to avoid the Toyota name and challenge the likes of BMW/Audi/Mercedes.
 :Startled:

Incorporate all the top end line into a single Credor name?

A fair statement.

Incidentally another MWF member gave a similar suggestion just earlier on today in another thread and my own personal opinion on it is stated here a few hours ago:

I was in Japan for 3 times this year. And believe it or not , i was so so tempted to pull the trigger for a GS, i spent hours of 3 of my trips at yodabashi and bic camera, trying and looking and admiring. The gs does looks different when wore on hand you have to feel it to appreciate it's zaratsu polishing. Which i believe will shy the rollies sport watch. However the only thing that is keeping me from pulling the trigger is the "price" and brand name and resale value. Yes i am kiasu i admit.  Not saying it does not worth for what it is , just that seiko is too well known for it's mass market watches.

Until today, GS still remain in my wishlist. I am sure i am getting one in near future but just not for now.

SBGR081, i love you .. !  lol

I'm sure price is no issue for you as you have a PP or is it a few PPs, a few Rollies, PAMs.
So its only the brand name. Resale value depends on where you put it up for sale.
By the way you should go to Wako in Ginza, Matsuya or Mitsukoshi which sells the Master Shop models which Yodobashi and BIC Camera are not allowed to carry as they do not have Master Shop status. Master Shop models are the higher range GS. The SBGR081 is also not a Master Shop model.

Seiko itself acknowledge that its GS brand is not well known enough, and therefore it is addressing it via new investments and expanding distribution. Historically, its watch making capacity (a combination of automated part production, machine finishing, hand finishing, movement adjustment) can only fulfill demand in the Japanese market. It was only in 2010 that GS was made available internationally after Seiko made the necessary upgrade in production capacity.

AFAIK, there is no plan by Seiko to consolidate its high end products under a new brand umbrella, as in Lexus, Infinity and Acura for Toyota, Nissan and Honda respectively. In fact, Grand Seiko, Galante and Credor are already sub brands positioned in that segment. Seiko knows that its premium brands appeal and are already known to watch connoisseurs - maybe it is fine with the status quo. It it worth noting that the size of Seiko's watch business is small relative to its printer business under Seiko Epson. And that revenue from selling premium watches will always pale in comparison with selling affordable (but value for money) watches. Maybe, its priority is different compared with the car manufacturers who wish to directly challenge the likes of Mercedes, BMW and Audi.

I think Seiko has a long term plan to make GS a well known brand for its high quality (and sparkling) finishing, its movement accuracy and its reliability, as all GS owners will know - just that it is not doing it in a big hurry for the abovementioned reasons.

....
