Which Panerai is recommended for a Start?
« on: May 26, 2010, 10:23:28 PM »
hi! Sifus and friends.

well! basically im saving for a PAM....well! for me budget is an issue and i think my choices are more likely tied down to this 2 models.

PAM000
PAM005

but my preference is the PAM005/ PAM111/ PAM117

however, i guess i wait for some one to sell then i buy from them, pre-owned or maybe grey mkt stocks (with warranty of course).

but any suggestions? heheheh...

by the way...whats the difference between PAM000 vs PAM005? (besides PAM005 having seconds on the dial)

case difference? size? thickness?

guess you prefer something with a second hand. from your choices.

if you intend to have a more versatile watch, stick with a S/S. but if you rotate between a few watches then the Titanium watch is good to have.

a S/S watch would dress up nicely with no nice gator/lizard straps. would go well for any formal occasions.

as for me i prefer the base models. all the models u mentioned share the same cases, so sizes, thickness is the same. movements are more or less the same as well, after all it derives from the same base movement. the difference is just the sub second hand.

the base logos are quite rare and hard to get your hands on. especially the Zeros. most purist would have that in their collection eventhough it's considered as the lowest end of all Pam models. infact i was looking for a Zero before i got my 112.

the Fiver looks real sporty to me. i would prefer it over a 111. again the fiver is quite a rare find with the production numbers of the logos far lower than the rest of the bases and marinas.

for me if you put a base logo Zero/Fiver on the table next to any historic models, i would reach for the logos straight away. those models are way more far and fewer in between. u do not get much chance to see it in the wild. i've only seen one Fiver over here in the public compared with tons of 111 and 104. also the logos are cheaper and gives more bang for the buck. the novelty of the clear casebacks would wear off quite quickly IMHO.

of all the historic series, the most common is the 111 with the highest production numbers every series so far. but i anyone knows why the current L series only runs 500?

is it true they are going to go all high end or going to abandon the historic series because of ETA going to stop supplies as rumoured? but then what about the rest of the models that uses the 7750 and other ETA calibre?

the Marinas would look smaller than the Base. The fonts of the Marinas are smaller to accommodate the sub second hand and not to mention to squeeze in an extra line of word on the dial. although with the size of the watch the term "squeeze" would be an oxymoron. but u get the idea.

so few question u got to ask yourself:

1. Nine or Sub Second hand?
2. Sandwich or Sausage?  :Laughing_on_floor:
3. Clear or Solid Caseback?
4. SS or Titanium?

try googling up some comparo photos and walk into any shops to try out all the models if you can. you'll know when you find the "one" when it sings to you on your wrist.

cheers

hope it helps

my 112 saying hi  :)

Go for the logo if you can get one.. the only 2 model with logo and filled lume...

some AD think that panerai will discontinue their the based model once their in house P.999 hit the market... but i think it will wait another year or two..

both logo are not selling at retail, mostly... all grey market will goreng them and some AD might too (but hard, very hard) and if not, no discount given..

i owned 4 pam and by far the zero is my favorite ;)

good luck!
scott

hi! sifus!

okie...i think i got good advice here! well! i think i'll am for the PAM000 or PAM005, if i got a chance to buy them..found a few in HK, brand new retailing for RM18K...that truly insane...hahah! like you guys say! grey mkt...goreng the prices....

anyway! might try and look for second hand....good condition one lar...this one is for the keeps...will not sell this no matter what..since this is the first PAM i want to get...i want it to be memorable...

by the way! like scott say, maybe in a few years time, Panerai will be able to run in house production at a high scale...hence they dont have to depend on getting their movements from ETA...but i think all this is marketing...they just want to differentiate their brand...with all range completed with in-house movement. well! i think this is a very good start..but price will bound to go up...

thanks guys....from your advice..its clear that i should get the logo as my starting point....well! i like both...but i do prefer the sub second dial...

See that you going for the luminor models. No radiomir? my first pam is the 210 ;D but between the pam 005 and the 000, i'd go for the 000. i never like the sub second but that is just my personal taste. i know many others who like the sub second. anyway, whichever pam you choose, know that it is a watch of immaculate quality. cheers.

sifu,

like i mentioned price is a big factor for me...
for my understanding...

PAM000/ PAM005 - Pre-owned should be around SGD5200 - 5800 (but how much does a brand new cost?)

what about PAM111 and PAM112? i think PAM111 is one of be the best selling model..if not mistaken.

by the way..whats this PAM240..and doesnt it cost damn alot.?

sorry i havent been to any AD, paiseh to enter...dont have the money yet! hehehe

new revised prices for 111 is 3900 euro so it should be dbl of that.

last time i checked it was 3400 euro and singapore selling round SGD6800.

if it;s still that works that way..the new 111 price should be SGD7800. bros. correct me if i am wrong

the price of 000 and 005 should be close to the pre-owned prices u stated.

just to share some of the legwork that i did locally and online.

first of all, check out the RRP prices here : http://www.paneristi.com/reference/pricelists.html

locally i think there're 2 ADs that i know that carry but dont have much stock so let's not worry about them.
there's another dealer selling grey market pams which has quite a number of BNIB pams (no used though).
for them, pam 210 and 111 and others that are not "luminor base models" u get a 10% discount.
the pam 210 works out be below 15k, and 111 below 16k. that's if they have stock, but the last i checked, they had a few.

as for 000 and 005, these are selling at premium roughly about 15k or so. i'd get the 111 in this scenario.

if u want to try the international scene, well used 000 and 005 are selling about US$3.3k ~ 4.5k (very big range pending on condition). these are normally US or HK based sellers.

singapore is also a place where u can find a lot of used PAMs but price seems to be higher, but may be safer since u can physically view, verify and collect.

lastly there's a few singapore based used pams collectors (like jwwatch and visiotime), their prices are like the used market but u're buying from a shop.

whoops i forgot to to add a bit more.

go for the sandwich dial, pay a bit more it's worth it.
i went for a 104 as my first (because i needed a date and sub-seconds for a daily work watch),
and everyday i smacked myself cos the painted dial didn't look as good.

finally bit the bullet to upgrade to a 312. been happy like sh*t ever since i get to awe at the sandwich dial.

also, i have a pam 210 for *casual* wear. it's ok since i don't care if the time really works  ;D

for me, the sub-seconds and date is important for work. i keep looking at the watch whenever i'm writing a cheque or doing banking and when there's no date, i'm lost. ( i know i can look at my phone, but i just never do)
as for the sub-seconds, w/o it, i'm always worried it's not moving, so with the sub-seconds it just puts me at rest :)

Crown guard Vs no crown guard
luminor vs radiomir

base vs marina
no second hand vs small second hand at 9
no cosc vs cosc

contemporary vs history vs logo
painted dial vs sandwich dial vs filled Lume dial with logo
automatic vs handwind vs handwind
non see through caseback vs see through vs non see through with logo
date vs no date vs no date

so it's up to what u like n what is your budget?

I choose pam111 because I like the
crown guard, sandwich dial, see through case back n small second

so choosing a 1st pam I'll say base on budget, design n availability .... + patient!

+1 vote, i totally agree (if u dun need the date, that is)

anyway it does have everything one would need from a pam, sandwich dial, see-thru caseback, sub-seconds, crown guard (all luminors have this anyway) and last of all, u get a 10% discount since there's no premium for this model, ++++ there's ready stock for BNIB locally :) no need to wait.
