Title: What was your first dream watch?
Post by: Kennypane on October 25, 2012, 05:53:58 PM
I had to dream realistically. It was back in 1998, I purchased this from Woo Hing. If not mistaken they had a shop in Jaya Supermarket, Section 14, PJ. The building is now gone making way for new developments. 14 years now, this watch is still ticking.

It has gone through battery changes. The tritium completely deteriorated from the hands. It evaporated and I had to send to an old uncle to clean the inside of the mineral glass. It was Tag first Formula One watch if I am correct. Endorsed by the late Legendary Ayrton Senna. There used to be printed ads of this watch with him as the ambassador.

This watch has gotten a teeny bit too small for the wrist. It sits in the drawer sadly most of the time. My only Tag. I did sell a silver dial Tag 2000 series once about 7 years ago. I wore this Tag with pride then. Like the big white logo of Tag Heuer in a shield / emblem printed on the dial.

Hope to see your first dream watch. With a little story behind it would be nice. Cheers. I used to wear a Swatch before this dream watch.

My dream watches were a Tag and Explorer 2. Surprisingly, I do want them when I can afford them now. Probably, Explorer 2. That time I would really "die" for a Tag is not for its price tag but now I am almost certain I don't want a Tag.

It was the Explorer 1.
Took me more than 10yrs to finally buy it. Sold it.
Then got an even cooler one!

I like Tag Carrera the classic looking ones. Especially the chronographs. The modern ones too bold and avant garde.

Man i still remember my high school or college days where the Tag 2000 was like THE Tag to get.
I ended up with a 4000 series as a college present instead.

But still kicking myself in not getting a mechanical version though.

This is weird cos everybody's dream watch was a Tag. Amazing how powerful Tag's branding strategy was.

partly also becoz rolex was beyond reach. if i ate white bread and drink plain water, I can buy a quartz tag with my 3 months salary. i didn't find how much an exp2 would cost then becoz i didn't find out. i hv myself to blame becoz i kept telling myself i can't afford it.

yea in terms of advertising and marketing such as endorsements i think Tag has done it quite well that's why ppl usually start with Tag but eventually move up to finer watches depending on how much they're willing to invest

My 1st dream watch was a Tag. I bought a Kirium and I wore regularly for 9 years until I bought my GMT II. Now, I wear the Tag once every couple of months.

Well on the topic of Tag, my dream piece would still be the 6000 series which Senna had actual input on.
Then there is the ACTUAL one that he wore.
And then there was the ad with him and the basic model F1 series wayyy before.

Yes i am a fanboy. :P

1st up the only model which he had input when he was still alive.

Now this one he actually wore and certified by Tag. Not a real looker but i think for his fan is collectable.

Tags sell well here in Malaysia as mentioned by someone, its all about marketing. For a company that do not make most of its watch parts, they have been succesful.Thing is the yanks do not think much of tags and used ones go cheap over there

I guess the interest in horology here in this country only picked up very recently say after year 2000? I am just guessing and anything prior is all Tag Heuer only. Yes? No? I only got interested in 2003.

Hi, Meor,
I guess you meant the Ebel 1911 dress watch.  Yes, really loved those in the 1990's but just started my career so did not have enough spare cash to get one those days. My dream watch those days? The Omega Speedmaster Professional.

mine was a seiko kinetic auto relay , it was the 1st auto relay watch fr seiko that I was so fascinated by the power reserve and auto time adjustment when u 'reactivate' the watch back. Took me almost a year to consider and almost all my bonus $$ that time to get it . watch is still with me till today almost 15 yrs later. Only send in once for servicing to replace the kinetic battery.

True enough. I was a fresh grad then. How to wear Rolex, LOL or even dream of AP, JLC, IWC, Breguet, Blancpain, Patek...nah, maybe an Oris but Oris never advertised. What about Omega? Why I did not think of Omega then? Probably it would have cost me 3x my salary. Eat white rice only and drink tap water to get one. These brands mentioned in the 90s their design so so only. Maybe both Omega and Rolex design stayed the same throughout.

After his unfortunate tragic accident, Tag continued to his signature in green on the dial of the Link series Chronos. Agreed, the greatest with F1 technology unlike today's. Do u think he is better or Schumi better given the same car?

Now u r talking. At least something different. Manual wind some more. Good taste u have. I only realized the stories behind Speedmaster post year 2004 I think. From having a bit of interest in watches. I used to hunt for used watch mags cos cheaper. Started reading IW, QP, Watchtime, Revolution, Timewerke, Chinese mags for pics, and others.

I was drawn to the Speedy Pro after my good friend received one from his uncle a late 70s model all banged up. He sent to Swiss for repair. Cost quite a bomb. It was his graduation present. Lucky b@5tard!

Yes. Remember that one. Some rainbow color indication somewhere on the dial! No I think it's yellow red black color or something. After that came Sportura series which I thought were damn pricey.

Tag Heuer Quartz that was given to me in 1991 when I graduated from U. Still have it. Long out of production and I haven't figured it's proper name and catalog #. My old watch from Form 3 through University was a multi-function digital Seiko.

Tag Heuers are (and still) kick ass for the younger generation looking to move away from their secondary school Casios/Swatches. It was my gateway drug that introduced me to watch collecting...

Back when I was a fresh grad, I yearned for the Kirium. Obviously, it was too expensive for me back then and I ended up buying a fashion brand watch with a similar look. Fifteen years on, I started collecting them. Starting with one, I now have quite a few of them. They are "small" by today's standards (38mm) but I still find them attractive. Also, since they are not that popular now, they are also relatively affordable to collect, which is great for me.  ;D

I guess Kiriums would qualify as my "dream watch" back in the 90s.

However, if you ask me now what is my "dream watch", don't quite have an answer. My taste and target change all too soon. At the moment, I am hooked on Omegas but sometime soon, I hope to pick up a Zenith Striking 10th and a Rolex SeaDweller / Daytona. I wouldn't mind a Pam as well. However, right now though, I am dedicating my energy on chasing down a Speedy Pro 863 (or a 1863 if the 863 proves to be too elusive), with the aim of modding it with a Panda dial.

If u r looking for lemania 1863 it's not that elusive cos they are still selling it, no? The difference between a 1861 and 1863 is the latter having the plastic brake lever on the chronograph second being replaced with a steel one, gilt to rhodium, 17 to 18 jewels and that's it. 1863 was introduced for display caseback.

You may want to share where you obtained the above information.

First, I thought the metal part is retained in the Cal.1863? The plastic part was a new development which went into the Cal.1861.

Second, I thought the "1" was added to both the Cal.861 and Cal.863 when Omega / Lemania changed the plating of the 861 AND the 863 to rhodium in 1997/1998?

And third, are you saying the Speedy with Cal. 863 did not come with display back?? I thought the display backs were already used on the 863 from the 1980's?

I was too quick to answer you as I was in the hair saloon. My bad. Enkidu is absolutely right. I have read the same source from late Chuck Maddoxx. Why chase after 863? The gold plated movement? I remember the panda dial was issued for Apollo version for Japan only. You should chase that one. Just a thought.

As we talk about Speedie Pro there's a nice one for sale at Members Pre Owned. Through to the original well, closest in modern day watches.
Title: Re: What was your first dream watch?
Post by: timenut on November 18, 2012, 02:25:52 PM
No worries. Hmm.. why the 863? Well, I just find the gilt plating more aesthetically pleasing.. and with a display case back, it's perfect. I also wouldn't mind a 861 or dare I hope, a 321. Very likely though, I'd be "settling" for a 3572.50 with a 1863 movement, as those are more readily available.

I hope to have a Speedy with this dial some day. It originally came with the Speedmaster Pro Mitsukoshi 3570.31 (LE of 300). Sold out very quickly and almost impossible to find on the used market. Quite a few Speedy lovers have modded their Speedies with this dial.. I plan to do the same mod sometime soon once I have tracked down a suitable "candidate" for the transplant.  ;D

My first dream watch was this automatic Omega Constellation Chronometer day-date with grey dial when I was in secondary school wearing Citizen, Seiko, Pagol, Sandoz and Titoni (some on loan from my elder brothers).
For some reason, I never wore a digital quartz watch even though some of my classmates had Seiko digital quartz with lots of functions..
Subsequently I did buy myself a gold filled Omega Seamaster day-date analog quartz with my first ever pay...

In circa 1990 a gold filled Omega Seamaster Day-Date quartz was selling for a princely sum (in those days) of about M$900-1200, if I recall correctly? Your first pay check must be pretty princely as well.... ;)

They still look good today although a bit tad small but they are ok. Today I had first hand experience winding my grandpa Datejust. My dad left it idle and it stopped. Unlock the crown it pops out and the spring mechanism still shows solid tensile strength after so many years.

First pull I was unable to adjust the date on the Datejust. My dad corrected me. Dumbass me wind it forward to adjust date. Nope. It has to be wound counterclockwise. First time I see when it reaches midnight or slightly past midnight the date ch-change confidently. Amazing. The power of Rolex I admit. Lovely watch.

For me, it was what I always saw in advertisements from (if I remember correctly) Newsweek, Reader's Digest and National Geographic..

"the Oyster Perpetual Superlative Chronometer... Officially Certified.. Day-Date"

The other one was ".. you never really own a ....., you just take care of it for the next generation"

Good advertisements are powerful aren't they?

I guess the interest in horology here in this country only picked up very recently say after year 2000? I am just guessing and anything prior is all Tag Heuer only. Yes? No? I only got interested in 2003.

Back 2000, lot mature successful man are looking at Rolex, Omega.. For youngster, all Tag :)

I still remember, it almost all flooded by replica Tag watch at Petaling street that time..

i guess, my dream watch was Swatch Chrono and TAG was heavily marketed back then towards youngsters. other brands attract older successful people. (+30s)

Thats the traditional design kept's their value.. i guess..

My first dream watch was the Tag Heuer diving watch 2000 series, black dial, steel bracelet (running on battery, that time i don't know), i saw my manager wearing this and i got to know the watch brand "Tag Heuer", it look so smart and solid for the watch, since then, i set my aims to getting one by working hard on my career to reaching a status where i deserve to own one, that's my very first dream watch.

Years pass, the watch was discontinue production by the time i would like to reward my self after all the hard work with this Tag Heuer 2000 series, and, i start to look for Kirium, but Kirium discontinue too.

Eventually i own my first mechanical watch "Oris TT3" and follow by "Tag Carrera (special edition)", Before the Oris TT3 I'm wearing a Swatch Irony.

Back to school time, few watch's i own and some still with me till this day
The Beatles Watch Limited edition (with guitar shaped wooden slide open box)
G-Shock
G-Shock G-Cool (not sure any ones here remember this G-Cool?)
Spoon Watch

Watch to me its not only a time keeping machine, it also means a rewards for an achievement in my goals, more importantly watch to me is a machine that should "solid" enough to be a "companion" that able to follow for whatever things i do and wherever place i go..Just like what mention in most of the sport watch advertisement tag line..

:)

Was never much of a watch person before this. I went through the various swatch but still envy those rich kids with Tag and Gucci G watch (came out during my high school years and some rich boy had it) but was too oblivious to take note of the different models.

Buy yesterday I tried on this and do dream about owning one to complete the oyster collection. The Marc Jacobs

During my schooling era , when the 1st indigo watch was lunch ( I think timex) , everyone was going crazy about it , everyone want 1 . Bought a preowned guess indigo that time , I remember wearing it to sleep just to play with the indigo feature , g-shock came later with the indigo feature .

NICE!!

What's the asking for that? The endlinks look a little worn though. Or maybe it just needs new spring bars?

Already wearing a TT most of the time, might as well go full monty into YG. What Hanz said was right, with the gold prices today and factoring in per gram price of 18k YG, you are actually paying for a discounted YG bracelet with an attached calibre  :Laughing_on_floor: just the chinaman reasoning talking here.

Furthermore; trust me, I already look like a ah beng. Might as well complete the look.
