Would like to know how much damage to your watch can you take before you get really mad.. I for one am fine with hairline scratches and desk diving scratches but i cannot stand to receive a ding to my watch. Hence everytime i walk past someone or near the wall, I would put my hand behind my back. However if the watch has a ding when i bought it pre-loved, i can accept it but i dont like to take 'fresh damage' to my watch. What say you guys on the matter?
-
I'm fairly cool with the little dings and scratches, I take it as a part of everyday use. However if I drop it or knock it against the wall due to carelessness and there is a noticeable chip or something, that would hurt :/
-
i purposely scratch my project watch case, crystal and strap to look old...
i paid a mat salleh to make my watch dial and hands look aged....
i bought aged leather to make its strap....
-
Part of life....screw it i say....

That's the way...

i've given up on being fussy...can't afford to keep polishing the watch if there're scratches or dings..

After a while, you will get use to it, but I still rub like hell if the first hairline spotted on my new watch, then my son will ask me, "why keep rubbing the watch, want to keep it shine" :Laughing_on_floor: :Laughing_on_floor:

This is a classic mate!

Used to bother me but nowadays I like watches with patina and wabi. The more beaten up the better.

I guess many can accept damage here and there on their watch. I am just finicky after all. What if someone carelessly ding your watch real bad, can you just walk away from it if the dinger just nonchalantly walk off like nothing had happened? Can you just walk off not feeling the slight bit annoyed? Why i mentioned ding is because to repair a ding, the steel has to be ground down to a certain level unlike a simple polish to remove scratches.

In short, just say ur grail which u bought brand new for a week and it got scratched or chipped real bad. Do you feel "it adds character to the watch"?

Yup, I can walk away... after I accidentally drop a gas tank or something equally heavy on his fingers... ::)

Just read in another forum where the author asked whether scratches adds character to your watch. I love the one reply where he mentioned," does scratches add character to your new car?" :Laughing_on_floor: End of the day, i still think the general consensus is to avoid any damage on your watch but accidents happen and we should not be too bothered by it.

For me, i'm so bloody fussy. Got one tiny hairline on the bezel can caused me sleepless. On and on try to rub it and pray that it can go away.
Just hate it when you taken an extra precaution not to get it scratch or what not, but it will soon happen. :'( :'(

was like you once but it turn out to be very frustrating so i change my opinion on accidental scratches. Cant be helped and cant be avoided.

I feel that if I scratch or ding a beater myself, it's ok. However, if someone else does it, I get mad :Scolding:
The worst part is that you won't be able to say anything. If you do, they'll give you a funny look and say something along the lines of 'It's just a watch'. Annoys me to no end.
I do, however, like to keep my dress watches looking pristine. No point in dressing smart and then coupling it with a beaten-up watch ;)
A well-aged watch is a totally different matter. I love patina and it can make a rather ho-hum watch something to be truly proud of. It shows that the watch has a "pedigree"; a throwback to a time when things were better produced and watches were something to be handed down from generation to generation.
All the best,
Gavin

ouch...that is really painful. A polished case some more..Going to get it polished?

Nope, leave it as it is. Adds character to the watch, no?
-
Dings and scratches really annoys me.. Just need to be extra careful. If possible, Change the metal bracelet to leather strap.. :) and wear the watch under the sleeves..
-
character? That would be one character that i wished i did not have on my watch. The ding looks deep.
-
hahahahaha. Hobbit. I wont get too unset when sxxx happened. Its part of life. But from your watches, you look to be rather 'careless' to be a watch lover???
-
The moment I saw the ding my heart sank . sori to see tat happen to ur precious watch
i still can live with light scratches but not ding or deep scratches, i will get upset but not losing sleepz over it hahahha

Hahaha perhaps I am. I use to work on planes and when I was working I have my watch on all the time. So there are times it will get 'caught' on wires, tubes, pipes etc, hence the scratches and dings. Same now I guess even though I have long retired. I still use my watch when I wash the car, cook, bathe the dog, hike etc.
My boss, well ex from a long time ago use to have a Breitling Aerospace (hence my facination with and want for the watch) which never left his wrist. The watch has many scratches and dings and whatever else thrown at it. It has been in water, soap, hydraulic fluid, coke (yes it is true, we use coke to clean parts of the aeroplane) and even avgas (big name for kerosene - plane fuel) and the watch keeps on ticking.
The other watch is the Rolex GMT Master. It has been through much and had a Rolex rebuild in the 80s. Well, this is one watch I would not wear on a daily basis and get scratched or dinged, but to me the watch was worn for the purpose it was made, to be worn.
The same for any of the watches I have today (save the GMT Master and the Snowflake). I wear them. The watches are suppose to be tool watches and I wear them as such, even the Panerai. Been through a number of straps with the Panerai.
I am in the process of getting the crown and stem tube on my MKII Stingray replaced as it fell when I was wearing it and someone knocked into me and caused the watch to fall. The crown got dented and is now jammed against the stem tube. Can't get them separated, so have to replace the pair. Did not lose sleep over it (once I found out that Bill still has parts for has parts for the watch, a concern I have with small independent watch guys but that is another story).
I am not saying that you should use your watches like me, I can be a tad careless, it is true, but to me, a scratch, a ding, although not welcome, is part and parcel of owning and wearing and collecting watches. It serves as a memory of what has happen in my life and the life of the watch.

Nicely said..

To all watch owners with dings and scratches...Taking the philosophical route could well be the best option in life...look on the bright side, it could have been worse.
-
small scratches still acceptable for me. But I'm more peculiar about water... like rain water. I always cover my watch with my shirt when walking under the rain even if the watch is WR ;D
-
1200 fine grit sandpaper can do wonders to your brush / satin watch case too
-
I see. I see. So you are an aerospace engineer? Well, unless i have only one watch. Otherwise, i will not do that to my watch. There are more than enough watches which are really to do certain tough and rough works for me. Dont think i will ever wear AP, IWC, rollie or pam to work in farm. :Laughing_on_floor: But anyway, i got your point.
-
imagine the crystal of the watch becomes like this :Startled:

I don mind small scratches but not big and obvious scratches :-[

What is wrong with the watch ? looks ok to me ;D
-
How would one repair a forged carbon case? Cape cod? ???
@Laktos Kid
The bezel at 12 to 1 is severely dented. So are the lugs. Dents all over the bezel too.
-
The better question is how does the fellow wear the watch and what did he use it for? That is an expensive watch and unless he is involved in an accident or he purposely abuse it, I dont see how the watch should be damaged in that sense.
-
now i notice the damage, my god i wonder how the owner damage forged carbon ! maybe hit with diamonds !
-
It irks me if the watch is still new ;)
But after a few dings, i get numb :HammerHead:
