Title: Is your watch more expensive than your boss'?
Post by: takashi78 on January 05, 2011, 08:28:15 AM
Unless you are your own boss then how or what do you feel if your employee wears something 2x or even 10x of what you are wearing?

Others like me...sometimes i am weary not to show my watch too much to my boss. I have 2 and both wears a Casio and has been for the past few years.
While my daily is usually my SD.
Most times i can hide it under my shirt so when its casual friday i usually rotate to my cheaper watches.

Not that my boss recognizes any of the watch i wear but then again we wouldnt want too much attention also right? :P

Reason i am asking is i might consider my first yellow gold watch but still thinking how often i can wear it.

I believe it depends on whether your boss is a watch kaki or not.

If your boss is a WIS then you had better wear something with less bling than what he's wearing.

If your boss can't tell the difference between a Timex and a Casio then no matter what you wear he would still be clueless.

Just my 2 cents.

Peter,
If you're considering a solid gold watch then you should be worrying more about people with criminal intent rather than your boss's impression of your watch.
Avoid walking in dark alleys with any bling bling watch.

i think as long the material (yellow or rose gold) make does not outshine ur boss, it should be ok

In an office, esp. where staffs are non watch affectionate, my answer is always yess.......

Most of my staffs / colleagues wore quartz watches. Anything (watches) above rm200 is expensive to them. No. Its not that they cannot afford them. Its just that it is not justified to spend $$ on watches.

To them, a watch is just to tell time. Why spend so much?

My boss, CEO of the company wore a quartz watch. Whats more can I say?

Yes, some of my watches are more expensive than my bosses  :Laughing_on_floor:

My CEO = Tag Aquaracer quartz (analog with digital) sorry, don't know the model name.  ::)
My COO = Vintage Rolex 6694

None of my colleague is WIS, and I've spread some virus to few of them.  :Laughing_on_floor:

Why people have the perception that boss is always more wealthy than subordinate?  I have a direct report that married to a wealthy family and his in-law gave him expensive gifts like a Panerai Daylight Chrono, etc. every now and then.  Some of the others have invested wisely and probably have a larger bank account than me.

If you understand this point, then you won't be offended that your staff is wearing a more expensive watch or driving a bigger car or staying in a bigger house or having a prettier girl friend/wife than you   ;D

My superior still wears his 30 year old Citizen dual time. Still drives an old Accord ( really old ). But then again, he lives in a 7 room detach. And retiring with a big fat EPF bounty. Hmm.. maybe I can interest him in a Daytona. ::)

Personally, I dont really bother if my watch is more expensive than my boss'. It just shows one thing, you are willing to spend money on something that they are not willing to do so. It isnt like they cannot afford one, its just that they choose not to.

All very good points.

Danny,
I am always well aware of the environment i am going to be in and wear my watch accordingly.
Example i wont ever wear my SD when i go mamak with my friends at night. Sometimes i dont even wear a watch also.

The solid gold watch Chris pointed out to me price is too tempting to pass but still considering and how often can i wear it.

I think my boss dont care much either cause he knows each person has different priorities and interest in life. He spends all his money on food and long distance phone calls back home and i on watches.
My boss still drives a 1st gen Proton Wira with 240k on the odo and says he will not change until it reaches 300k. Thats his principle. The car is 14yrs old i think.

Yes. My boss definitely noticed my PAMs and did make some remarks. He's always with his Speedmaster. Nowadays, i try not to have my PAM on when I know I'll be having meetings with him.

Just because people earn tons more money doesnt mean they need to spend it on watches.

Theres lots more fun (or necessary) things to do with the money - like sports cars, hi fi, camera gear or just plain old investing in property/stocks

My CEO wears a Seiko quartz, the Chairman wears a ancient Omega.

Who says watches are important for status? Its whats in your brains, not on your wrist

I think it doesn't matter if the watch is expensive or not. I think everybody should wear interesting watches, really depends on how you prioritise.

If you take money out from your kid's university fund to buy an expensive watch..then it doesn't matter what your boss thinks of you because you have a bigger problem.

Your kids now think you're an a**hole!

I think only a WIS would notice what others wear on their wrist.. This includes bosses, colleagues and others.
From what I observed, non WIS outnumber WIS by a huge number in most companies.

Actually, I reckon that if the employee can afford to buy a better watch than his/her boss, it's a real good sign and the boss should be really happy! It means that the boss is paying the employee well and the employee is happy!

I believe only a WIS will pay attention to the brand or model of watches other people wear. And for a WIS, he should understand very well that ones need to sacrifice many other things for that watch.

I consider I met a good boss. In fact,  One of my boss ( ED from holding co.) push me to buy my 1st Rolex. Told her ( yes, is HER) is expensive, not enough fund, bla bla bla ..... She convinced me to start with an Explorer 1 ( at that point, thinking to get a B&R).

Still remember what she told me ..... No watch is bad watch, as long as u like it. But Try to get a proper watch, and u will start open up your eyes to a lot of thing. And you will also have diff point of view on "valuation". Take it as a saving, rather than spending money on your night life , bla Bla bla...

Not saying that B&R is not good, I am still eyeing a lot on pre owned mkt.... Just that , Now I am working my Axx off for my 1st AP...

I mean is not so much about what your boss is wearing, is about what your boss is thinking .....

My expat boss used to wear a Panerai when he started his term here but later on, I noticed that he changed to a Seiko only and never saw that Panerai anymore. He still wears a Carrera Calibre 1887 with a leather strap every now & then, and that Seiko.
Never dared to ask him, maybe he got robbed or something like that...expats when new to our country...

I am the boss. So this kinda 'reverse' opinion la.. 3 of staff wears this Titus brands,  they bought together.  Each cost abt 1k+-. As for me, i put on my Grand Seiko most of the time.  They thinks its juz another Seiko. Not to undermind other Seiko watches (Seiko 5 and the divers are exceptionally well valued), but GS tends to be an understatement which suits me well. I can wear 15k watch with less fear of kena robbed than my Rollies frens. Only use Rollies/JLC for meetings.

Had same experience. 'Just pull the trigger on ##### (without undermining any other brand - just citing the conversation)', he said. Since then, i never look back and seems hard not to pull the trigger pulak now.

Another thing he said, watch is a therapy for him (and same goes for me too). When you are having a rough day, just look at the dial, the beauty of it, the details, the second hand sweeping. Enough to make a WIS feels better to conquer the world.

My boss don't really mind what I'm wearing I guess, she wears a Fossil chrono and I rock my Longines and Seiko to work most of the time.

Lately, she even came and ask for opinion on which watch to get next haha

My boss and me are WUS - everyone in the office thinks we're alike, even though we have a ... tumultuous relationship. Anyways he wears a Panerai, a Deepsea Dweller and a G-Shock...those are the only ones I see him wear. I on the other hand have 13 watches including 2 pocket watches - he has been interested in all of them, and he recently praised me for getting my latest - the Longines Heritage. I bet he must be wondering how do I get the money to buy so many watches, considering I just started working last year. :P
