Title: How much to spend???
Post by: ancs88 on December 31, 2010, 09:27:42 AM
Hi guys,

More like want to get a general idea on how much u guys are willing to spend on a watch based on your income. I know some can only spend few hundred bucks for a watch and some are willing to spend more than ten of thousand dollars.

Take this example, monthly income RM5k and you're willing to spend 20k on a watch by saving up - 4x of your monthly income.

So hope all of u guys can join in and share your opinion...

Let me start first... i used to think RM3k for a watch is considered expensive or in a way luxury. But now, I'm looking at watches 2x of my income which I considered keeping it for very long time. But till now, I'm still hesitating to pull the trigger!!!

Maybe awaiting for the right time and right piece to come!!!

For me.. I will only buy 1 or 2 good watches and hopefully it can last me a long time. On the amount.. well, I would say not more than 10k for me.

Before I bought my 1st >rm5k watch, i hesitated and thought hard for a long. after that i am comfortable buying watches of that price range. then came the next price barrier, same thing. hesitated and thought hard for a long time before pulling the trigger.

interesting topic...

to me, until today. i still can't break the barrier to hv a watch or to spend on a watch that cost me 1 month of my income. i guess, it is just different people looking at different thing about a watch. justification is just too subjective in this case.

but, i personally hv one very close friend, he is willing to save for 1 year.. to get a watch worth many months of his monthly salary.

as long as you still can makan and tidur nyenyak, did not go max on your wallet, all other committment are accounted, then one can spend on their choice of watches.

spending on watches will only come as an 'entertainment' fund set a side after the above statement IMO.

cheers

always buy the one you really want. even if it means saving months, years for it.

a few treasured pieces beats having tons of watches that does not have much wrist time.

I'm actually very curious about this too. Drooling over the Rolex Submariner, which the AD in KLCC said was like RM25k or so (just window shopping, lol). But I see most of the comments here are like 5k+- for a watch. I see most of the pictures in the "daily watch picture" thread being rolexes, though, and I'm sure they aren't 5k+-. So wondering if I'm missing out something here, lol.

Cheers.

RM25K retail, get a bit of discount...  :)

Actually spend what you can and get the best you can afford. Save and buy the watch that you really want. I use to buy new, but now buy pre-loved. So almost like new, some used but cannot get new and some you get at a bargain.

I agree with Chris

I regretted of getting my 1st expensive watch-Fortis. Sold my shares just for the sake of owning a watch but two months down the road, those shares i own eventually shot up to the price equivalent to a PAM351.
Ever since then,i am so eager to save up n work harder to get more money to buy my dream watch.

I would say that in general, nowadays I would spend max. of abt 10k for a watch.

But I must say that this is a very subjective and individual issue and at the end of the day u wld get different answers from different ppl on why their max limit is such and such. The best is to read , scout the forums, talk to sifus etc and make up ur own mind of what is your own max amount based on the criterias u deem important. e.g. design/brand/resale value/technology/features/etc?

Hi guys...

I think $$ is very subjective. So, spend whatever you are HAPPY with. But never say regret when you already spend. Never look back.

Happy new year.

I think if you still have doubt ... dont buy!  To me, watches are luxury items and should be last on your priority list.  One should get it after all the necessities are taken care of.

1. Buy the watch that makes your heart beats faster...the one that you can't stop admiring...the one that you "syiok sendiri" when you have it on your wrist...
2. And you can afford the watch. I know affordability is subjective.

True fans is not judged by  how many of SC's movies watched...but by how many times they watch it repeatedly..and how much they remember all the dialogues...hahaha!!

Actually, his dialogues are not as `silly' as one may thing...it actually has deep meanings...

Anyway, back to topic.....my own stand is never spend on a watch when the $ can be used for the family.....that is why if its a gift from the missus...its a much sweeter piece...hahaha

I totally agree luxury items should be on last priority... but I need to make a correction for my above statement, I would say I am trying to find more reasons for myself to splurge on a luxury watch and not feel so bad...

I'll tell u guys a short story later on!!!

My short "long" story:

In those days, even though I love watches, I had very with little knowledge (and cash) so my collection was very limited, and basically my watch is just a watch that I like and can afford... I had Tissot (quartz), Breitling (quartz), Casio G-Shock, etc and then comes the Tag F1 in 2008 which I considered already pricey for a watch even though things were getting a lot better for me. I was very happy with that watch as I love to watch F1 too!!! kinda cool too...hehehe!!! I still surf around looking for better watches like the omega, rolex, etc. Come to think of it, that was how it begun...

Last year, I bought a Omega Constellation for my wife and was offered a pre-owned 36mm Rolex Datejust 16234 and I was so happy to own that shiny shiny bling Rolex!!! I love that Datejust but somehow it was too small and too formal, so I was still searching for a bigger sporty watch even though I do not plan to own another expensive watch anytime soon.

So I surf around planning for my next watch, found the Omega PO Liquid metal!!! I was wow!!! The watch looks great in picture. So, when test drive with my wife but well, it didn't sit so well on my 6-inch wrist... it was nice but somehow just doesn't clicked!

One day, I went shopping and tried on the Sub and GMTIIc, well, I was impressed but I was unwilling to pay that sort of price at the time. On the same day, tried on the IWC, Breitling, and then one of the sales guy convince me to try on the PAM359. Holy sh*t!!! I was so impressed with the 44mm 1950 case and got goosebumps on the 359... I went crazy and started researching and reading more about Panerai... I started making plans on getting a PAM from then on.

The unfortunate happened!!! On 11-11-2010, my rented apartment in Shanghai was broken into. The Datejust and F1 was stolen including my wife's jewellery. It was sad and it took me some time to recover... I was very down that time so my wife gave me the green light to get a Panerai. Went to the boutique and the sales guy recommended me the PAM177 and PAM111 and put on a waiting list for a PAM366 "Fu" China special edition coz the price is still within our price budget. Luckily, I never make any haste decision so I went back and still considering my next purchase.

At one time, I was about to just get a Base version PAM as it was within my price budget, bit somehow it just doesn't feel right. I prefer the 1950 case PAMs and the choice were 312, 351 and 359. Therefore I'm still unwilling to pull the trigger until I can make up my mind and make the great price leap and feeling comfortable. When I found out there will be a 386, I tell myself "This is it!!!", this should be the one. So, I called the Boutique here and put a queue for this piece as it will probably be available by year end.

So I better start saving now as I do not want to use existing savings to buy it, I want to make my next purchase more worthwhile with effort and probably I will hugged it in my sleep and dream about it too, hahehehehahh!!!

The End!

We spend what is within our means and not just about buying watches. No point getting a personal and / or credit card loans to buy a watch. If you want to make a commitment with a bank, make sure it is a worth while investment.

I used to save up to buy expensive items. And by the time I have saved up I am not willing to let go my months of saving hence the hesitation I mentioned earlier. So now I just spend what I am comfortable with and do a worse case scenario what if I needed the cash. Can this watch turn into cash (or something useful) and how much will I lose?

My riches consist not in the extent of my possessions but in the fewness of my wants. -- J. Brotherton.

Nice story there. Thanks for sharing. My short input is to expect the pricing of the 386 to be around USD9k but be wary that for PAMs, you need to put it on the wrist to see how it is. Like the 339 looks so gorgeous in the pix but for me, when I had on on my wrist for the first time, it just didnt work for me.

I've tried the 312 on my wrist and it looks great!!! So, the composite material just added the extra "uumphh" and uniqueness on it!!! By the way, I also take a fancy on those boutique SE pieces with PIG dial.. which is a classic, eg. 411, 412, 414, 419, 420 but unavailable to me!!! So far, Shanghai edition is already fully booked.

Btw, u're still waiting for your 412, right?

Yes. I am on the list for the 412. Waiting eagerly for it as its the most affordable SE around (the boutique editions are all resonably priced vis-a-vis other SEs)

It works fine on my iPhone 3GS. Maybe you're in a place with a bad connection and it can't maintain the connection. Try again when you're on your home Wi-Fi connection or somewhere stable. Just guessing, of course, lol.

My fling with the Rolex GMT.

When I started working the price of the Rolex GMT was about 2 months of my wages. Over the years, the GMT price kept pace with my pay packet. After 5 years, the price of the GMT was still 2X my monthly pay. I moved on, acquiring more affordable watches, including a relative's preowned Oyster. Along the way, got hitched and family commitments followed. Only recently got the Explorer 2 for an anniversary. The Daytona was an impulse purchase for Xmas. Got stuck in Europe by the snow last month and the joy of the season got to me.

My advice? Start saving, be disciplined about it and have a target. Start saving Jan 2011 and target Dec 2011. 2012 and the prices would have gone up again.

So as long one does not go into debt and still live a decent life(style), the quantum of price against my pay should not matter too much as I enjoy the cheapest of my low end Seiko/G-shock as much as my recently acquired Sub LV.

in 1999, i was in college, but i know friend's dad who had a Sub Date with blue and red bezel. i wanted a watch like that time. IIRC, the price was abour 11 or 12K. being in college, i can only dream of it.

in 2001, i was in uni, but i was lucky i had good summer training job and it paid really well.

i was holding cash and the sub date that time costs about 2680 pounds sterling. i remember this price very clearly because i was eyeing for it in the UK. i blew the cash i had on holidays and parts for my car.

When i came back to malaysia, i could not afford it with my low salary and can only see the prices going up yearly.

last month i managed to buy my BNIB V series Sea Dweller after looking for a few months. I just had to have it because i do not want to repeat the same mistake i did 9 or 10 years ago.

purely speculative as far as the public concern. the price is increased, when u see a more expensive price tag. ur ball example is a good example. they can planned all they want and pulled back last min. if u really "worry", get it now. for bnib, the only way is up... either less discounts or increased retail price.

bro.. When can show your Bnib?
in 1999, i was in college, but i know friend's dad who had a Sub Date with blue and red bezel. i wanted a watch like that time.

I just had to have it because i do not want to repeat the same mistake i did 9 or 10 years ago.

for me i buy what i can afford and what i like..and save up for what i love..for me its best to own a few good timepieces that actually bonds with you than have 30 or so timepieces that get more or less zero wrist time

Hewitt - I always like to read stories like yours....

Good choice to settle for a SD, as they have stopped productions and its prices are inflating yearly.

I was told that the ND and the LV had stopped production and is now selling at premiums.

I always believed that one should have at least a rollie (sport)  in his / hers collections  - than have many 'other' timepieces to make up for the presence of one's collections.

my 2 cents

i wasnt really particularly interested in the SD initially, just that it looks best on my wrist.  i tried the Sub, it looked thin to me and also tried the DS, too big for me. so i went for the SD.

Hi guys...

I think $$ is very subjective. So, spend whatever you are HAPPY with. But never say regret when you already spend. Never look back.

Happy new year.
Yeah, never regret once money is spent. Never look back.
I have friends that is into Handphones. As we all know, electronics get cheaper with time.
They will never buy a 3-4k watch, but a new handphone costing 3-4k, he can drop that amount in no time.
Whatever floats his boat.
I myself overpaid for a pontos rectangulaire chrono 2 years ago.
Until i stumble into forums and found out about Zeetan.
Looked at his prices and I was like  :Startled:
But, we need to pay for our education sometimes. "Kao Hok Fai" in cantonese... if you know what i mean.
But I nvr regret the past purchases coz I wear and loved all the watches...
As for how much I am willing to spend, depends on my year end bonus.
I am willing to splurge half. But not for the sake of it... will still look for a watch that I like. even if it costs less than half of my bonus, even happier... have money for other things.

I must admit I probably fall into that category. 3-4K for an iPhone, tablet, MacBook, 27-inch display etc etc (I don't have all of those, btw) isn't too much of an issue. But 4k for a watch must think quite a bit, hehe. RM14 for McD also no problem, but RM8 for fried rice at food court is a no-no :p

Expenditure on a timepiece is definitely affected by one's income. It is interesting because different people have different views on how much should a watch be worth the buy. If you're a multi-millionaire who have no interest in watch collecting or the habit of wearing a watch, you might not pay RM110,000 for a Patek Phillipe 5712/1A while a millionaire watch enthusiast would.

From a personal point of view, i think if you want to make your money worth while, spend at least RM10,000-15,000 to get a watch that's worth keeping, for example pre-owned Rolex Submariner, Explorer II, GMT-Master II. Either save up or spend that amount if you are well off enough. But again, like i said different people have different views, so some might be willing to fork out RM10,000-15,000 to buy a brand new Tag Heuer Grand Carrera or Omega Planet Ocean because it suits their taste and style.

A decent watch should be worth at least the amount i stated. It is actually a good amount to start with if you're a beginner watch collector, then slowly upgrade to more expensive watches as you learn more about watch market.

there are many good watches below rm15k. omega speedmaster and seamaster are good examples.

If I had to begin with rm10k, i think i would not be into collecting watch. my 1st decent automatic watch is a speedmaster triple date which is less than rm10k. it sparked the my curiosity to know more about mechanical watches.

sshark: for 10k budget onwards those Omegas definitely should be considered in the list, and they look great too, never had any doubts about the beauty of those two you mentioned.

Well, it's just personal opinion that on average you got to spend 10-15k to enter the entry level into branded watch, but as long as the person likes the brand and its design, it is most important. You can spend 10-15k on Tag Heuer Grand Carreras, but a Tag is still a Tag, can't really be on the same level with a Rolex or Omega. The next level would be 30k onwards on Rolex Daytonas, AP Royal Oak, IWC, Zenith. Top level would be Patek Phillipe for sure, wearing a BMW 3 series or even 5 series on the wrist is definitely satisfying and extremely overweight on the wrist. Either that or AP Royal Oak Offshore or Solid Gold/White Gold Daytona.

I have yet to buy any yet but hoping that within the next few months there shall be one.

I reckon after you manage to buy your first 1k watch anything below is easy peesy and the moment you get to 5k, anything below that is easy peesy again. I think, at this point the most I'd spend would be for a Rolex :) As dc keeps on mentioning it here i.e. in MWF, a rolex is a must for a collector even if just one and I am in agreement :)

Sid - thanks for the comments.

Go easy on the first try, may could start with a new airking and later in life, upgrade to a sport model.

As you mentioned, after your 1st rollie...anything below is 'easy peesy'..

May I wish you good into your first rolex acquisitions

i'm not sure about you guys but personally i would never sell my 1st rollie because it is my 1st rollie...if i fancy another watch i'd save up for it. same goes to my oris because it is my 1st auto...not selling it for any reason (unless life threatening, touch wood).

as i am typing this i just realised there are other 1st(s) came to mind...1st panerai, 1st PP, 1st AP, 1st GS, 1st skeleton, 1st gas tube, 1st dress, 1st roselor, 1st GMT, 1st chrono, 1st sonnerie.... mati la wei!!!

hahaha, that's a good one omnipotent

I got my first russian watch which is mechanical konon konon to practice if have the desire to wind each day so when I get a Rolex (which I assume is hand wind) i will know what to do so not look like a fool (my own thinking)

2 years down the road, this winding thing is quite cool, also no fear of battery leak which destroyed my first swatch  :(

I relate to Hewitt somewhere down this thread on his story and my personal story with this rolex is that it just keeps getting more expensive. Someone here had mentioned that by the time you reach the target, it goes up again and hence I think it is time to act  :Praying:

Hahaha...soon soon, if not middle of year sure year end....hopefully

Just to relate to my experience.... Hooked on Rolex heritage and simplicity.... Started with replica Rolex (submariner, explorer)... Later feeling uneasy and guilty of tempering with Rolex intelectual property... OK go for original swiss made watch... Oris... Oris... Ball...  opss... learned that I can get preowned Rolex with the amount I spent already. Met a nice jeweller, willing to trade his Sport Rolex and the rest is history... If I can do it all over again... I will look for preowned Submariner to invest on.... enjoy them on my wrist and look for other good deals on preowned GMT Master & Daytona. People will argue that Sport Rolex watches are over priced, but I still think that they are the cheapest (if not Free)... You pay RM1x,xxx, wear them and down the road, you can trade or sell for RM1x,xxx.

ahha talking about servicing.. i took my K series sub to a former Rolex technician in SG. guess most ppl from SG would know who he is..

so i asked him 10 years already, so need servicing or not?

he replied.. 10 years only ar? aiyah comeback in another few years. took my watch and check the timing. said still within the specs and no need to service unless I really "work" the watch.

according to him, sports series can take all the beating unless something really major happen.

Interesting point of view. Playing the devil advocate, suppose you come back after a few years and find out that there are parts that have worn-out that would not wear out had you serviced the watch earlier? What happens then? Can you tell him that you said no need to service. My take on this is that really 'work' the watch is very subjective. Perhaps it is my training as an aircraft engineer, where service is due based on time and/ or usage.

I completely agree with Hobbit.
I practice preventive maintenance habit. Sure you can still stretch few more years but why risk it.
If you dont have rm1.8k to spend to service a rm20k retail watch after 7-10yrs of ownership then you're better off with a ETA watch that cost rm150 to service.
Thats just me though.

I dont need to spend money cause i share watches with my dad. Basically if you have similar wrist size with sibling/father, pour in your portion to get higher end watches, at least a rolex. In that way both of you can share a classic time piece!!
