Title: I once lost my mind ...
Post by: Manburg on November 03, 2010, 02:23:47 PM
Being new to the forum, I've never started a post regarding my watches in the gallery. And seeing that this has never been done before, I now take the liberty to do so, which is putting the modest collection (if it can actually be called "collection") of my Omegas here. The story goes as this. Some time back in August, I took the decision to start owning an Omega (note the word "an"). Then, after choosing the model that I wanted to buy from the Omega website, but without having the benefit of learning from the wisdom of the Omega WIS community in any of the fora, I headed to the nearest AD and straight away bought my first Omega (the cheapest Speedmaster available), which is as shown below:

It's a Speedmaster Date 3211.31.00. Below are some more photos:

Without its steel leg:
Can you see the red dot there?

With new leg. But the problem is the lug width is 19mm. So it's the case of neither here nor there. This is with a 18mm NATO:

Whereas this is with a 20mm NATO:

Thus, after getting my first Omega, I thought it was wise of me to start 'berjinak-jinak' with a WIS forum, in particular its Omega forum. It turned out to be A VERY BIG MISTAKE!!!

To be continued ...

The reason I said it was a big mistake was because, I couldn't let it go. I spent a lot of hours in front of the PC every day ogling at all these other models shown by all the other WIS, and I became addicted. It became apparent to me that instead of being contented with only one Omega (which was one big giant leap for me at the time), I longed to have another one. I said to myself, okay ... maybe this next model would kill it. So off I went to the AD 8 days after to get my second Omega, which is this:

Thanks! And it's only half of the story so far. Stay tuned!

But I think cheapest Speedy is Speedmaster Reduced.

Well, as I said, I was a novice. But I wasn't interested in the Reduced anyway due its small size. Even the Speedy Date, with its 40mm seems a bit small to my liking.

The story continues. I thought two was enough, but as they say, three is company, and I was damned!!  :HammerHead: I think I kinda lost it a bit at this time, and was still looking at other Omegas. The urge was so strong, and the poison had seeped deeply into the vein that everyday was spent thinking of my next Omega. Mind you, not even 3 weeks had passed since my first purchase. But I was only human, and human is weak, very weak. Thus, I became the new best friend of the AD, and made it three in 3 weeks.

Here is the Seamaster Professional Planet Ocean 2208.50.00:

The poison has seeped in deeply and badly. No known cure at the moment....

For some, it may take years to recover..........

Good luck to you.

Hi manburg,

I guess you can call yourself an omehgah-maniatic.

FYI: the cheapest speedmaster is actually piggybacked movement (2824 with module if i not wrong) as opposed to 7750 movement (which is an actual chrnograph movement itself)

Well, it's got to be mentioned that during that period, in an attempt to deflect my attention from any more Omegas (which was destined to fail anyway), I did one inexplicable thing - buying a Tag, and a quartz at that!  ???

Of course it backfired, as I was thinking, "why did I buy this piece in the first place?" Needless to say, it went back to the AD within days, and as a replacement I got ... what else? Another Omega!  :Dancing_banana: And this time I went for the iconic Moonwatch and thus it became the Omega quartet.

Some people would immediately cabut at the sight of 4.  :Startled: But for me it's a bliss ... Omega bliss.

As to the perceived addiction, I'm very much sober now - you can say I'm currently on the wagon.  One strong factor towards redemption is the realization that I'm now much poorer compared to before the mindless splurge. That's definitely a strong cure.  :Praying:

The moral of the story - don't ever buy an Omega.  ;)

Thanks for reading.

So a definate cure is a poorer pocket....well said. Thanks for sharing.

Nice pair of Omegas. How is the accuracy of the Co-ax movement?

Well, I'm quite embarrassed to say that I've never tested it conclusively.  :-[ But what can I say is that, the loss and gain are much fewer compared to the other 2 non-Co-ax, it's almost unnoticeable. But of course, as I said, I've never really put it to a test.

Sifu? Nolah, lots more to learn. Need to get one of the moon watch. Got the book (A Time Capsule), but not the watch.

Besview,

Love the 35th Anniversay watch. I gave that one a miss recently and got a MacBook Pro. Sigh... not meant to be. Another came up and still did not get it. One of the best looking Speedmaster IMHO. I love the case back.

Manburg,

I was lucky to get the X-33. It is Gen 1 and early Serial number, placing it around the launch date. Got it at a good price. Comes with the titanium bracelet, 'local' long canvas strap ala NASA version and a Taikonaut NATO strap. I got the Kevlar strap to make it 'more like' the watch used by the astronauts.

Title: Re: I once lost my mind ...
Post by: TheHobbit on November 10, 2010, 07:06:00 PM
Manburg,

The bezel is polished. The brushed bezel only appeared in Gen 2. The difference between Gen 1 (mine) and Gen 2 are:

1. Bezel: polished vs brushed.
2. Gen 2 has a lumed pip at the 12 o'clock position. Gen 1 has the red arrow.
3. Unidirectional bezel on Gen 1 vs Bidirectional on Gen 2.
4. Crown, easier to pull on Gen 2 as the crown has groves parallel to the case as opposed to Gen 1 where the groves are perpendicular to the case.
5. Brushed buttons on Gen 2, polished buttons on Gen 1.
6. Engraving on the case back. On the Gen 2 you will find 'Flight-Qualified by NASA for Space Missions'.

There are pro and cons on the design difference.

Local Omega scene as in Malaysia or in Taiwan? I am not familiar with the Omega scene in Malaysia. If Taiwan, it is pretty good.

So you're saying that you reside in Taiwan actually? ??? Well, I thought you're in Malaysia. :-[ That being the case, I guess it's too much to expect you to know the Malaysian scene. My bad! :HammerHead:

Hi Manburg,

No worries. I think the scene in Malaysia should be ok. Don't know if there are that many pre-love dealers in Malaysia, especially Kuala Lumpur. There may be lots but I only know some. In saying that I am not sure if they are still around. There is one in Central Market. There is another in Sg. Wang Plaza and they have a branch in BSC or maybe they have shifted to BSC. There is one in BV (from Singapore), but I think they have shifted to the new BV wing. There is another in Bangsar who also sells cars.

I don't know if they carry Omega per say but I am sure there will be some in their stock. As for prices, watches are cheaper (generally) here in Taiwan, although the Tudor Heritage Chrono was priced well in Malaysia.

Bro, you forgot one fact - I'm the budak kecik here! :Dancing_banana:

Well, I put them all in cabinets. But to my horror, I just discovered that some of my nephews/nieces (not sure which one :HammerHead:) had gatal tangan and played them as if they're hot wheels/matchbox, etc. Thus some are in hancur lebur condition now.

Of course you can! (AS Obama said it ... yes we can!) :Laughing_on_floor: Because inside every man, there's a little boy. :Dancing_banana:

FYI, Millenium Falcon is my grail Lego (I thought only WIS has a grail). I've been drooling over this for a very long time :Praying::

Manburg,

Have you tried the shop in Tropicana Mall, on the 1st floor I believe. Or it is still available in UK, try Harrods or Centrale in Croydon (i could be wrong). There is a model shop there that has the model.

Hobbit,

I'm actually a member of Brickboy that has outlets in Gardens, Sunway Pyramid (which has unfortunately been closed) and as you said, Tropicana Mall. I've never however been to the one in Tropicana. The last time I visited them (which was way back before Sept 09), the MF set was tagged at about RM2000+ (I can't recall the exact price). But I'm not sure whether it still holds that price seeing that the model has been discontinued. If it does, then it's a miracle!

When I was in the UK, my interest in Lego had however waned so much that I never even visited the Lego stores, such as the one in Bluewater, Kent which is not that far from my home. I did visit some of the toy stores, e.g. Hamleys, Smyths, Harrods, Toys r Us, etc. but even if they stocked Legos, the MF set is never there. I guess it's really a collectible now. How I wish I've got it then. :'(

By the way, if you're interested in witnessing how each of the 5195 pieces of the MF is painstakingly assembled in 3.38 minutes, please click here:

Or here for a lovely demonstration:

Or here for a very amusing and funny inside story of how the MF was originally built (even Lucas didn't know about this!)

Manburg,

Thanks for the links. Actually the MF is the only Lego set I would collect (Well I have the 2 feet long Ferrari F1, but that is a different story), the other being the walking 80-80. I will check if the local lego has the MF (this guy collects and also sell and teaches kids on Lego). I think Lego is slowly re-gaining popularity more so after James May's Toy Stories series where he built a house (life size) and lived in it. I do have the 2 feet long MF from Revell (I think), but not with me at the moment. I also have a 3 feet tall (voice control) R2-D2 and a 3 inch tall R2-D2 with a light sabre controller. I am into rc robots (I try anyway).

Hope to see more variety in that side of the forum.

But I think cheapest Speedy is Speedmaster Reduced.

Well, as I said, I was a novice. But I wasn't interested in the Reduced anyway due its small size. Even the Speedy Date, with its 40mm seems a bit small to my liking.

great collection. lucky is omega but not panerai o rolex o iwc where they got plenty model and more pricy to follow. hahaha. thx for the sharing...it is really ausump

Well, should have chosen Seikos - a lot more models to choose, relatively cheaper (sans the GS of course)

Anyway, just an update. I made my first visit to the Omega boutique in Pavilion today to have one of my Omegas examined. On being handed over the completed Order Form, I saw that in the Model No. space, the lady wrote the name of the model instead, and in the Bracelet Reference space, she wrote the model no. ??? That just shows how clueless some of these people are.

Bro... you still remember what is the retail price for your Speedy and Speedy PRO?

That's not a problem at all. The RP at the boutiques are as follows:

Speedmaster Professional - RM12K+ (can't recall the exact figure)
Speedmaster Date - RM10K.

You can drop by any AD selling Omegas, and I doubt the RPs are any different.

What is of uppermost importance is to know the model number. Speedmaster Professional (or more affectionately known as the "Moonwatch") numbers 3570.50.00. Do not be confused with another version of it, known as Sapphire Sandwich, which numbers 3573.50.00.

Me thought prices in M'sia pretty good except for high end stuff. Discounts off RRP normally offered with few exceptions.

In order to claim your VAT, one of the conditions is that the item must be brought out of UK within 3 months after the date of purchase. Since I bought all of them in August/September and left UK in September, I was entitled to claim all - they amounted to about 12% to 15% of the purchase price. When those percentages are added to the discounts that I got from the AD, the prices were cheaper than here, even after discounts, if any.
