Title: Need opinions help me please :'(
Post by: syamieclaws on February 22, 2016, 11:51:35 PM
Hi im a student currently and was thinking of buying an automatic watch that i can use long term. but the thing is i dont really understand much about the movement qualities and stuff. ive been through some articles n research in the net and from what i understand that swiss made watches are like the best in the market but costs a fortune too.

and recently i have had an eye on some ingersoll watches here in shah alam, i really like the design actually but im not sure about the quality eventhough from the outside, it looks like it is very well built. but i still cant tell whether the brand is a good quality one or just some overpriced watch brands in the market.

my budget right now is about 1000 to 1400 ringgit only and i think that with this amount of money i cant really get swiss made automatic watches.

but still, to watch experts here in the forum please help me. at least help me guiding on which one is better in quality for the long term so that i can put a smile on my face wearing a good quality timepiece.

sorry for the long post. THANKS! :)

Hi! Movement is the engine of the watch. You'd want one that is reliable and  established. I don't think I can give you a full explanation in a short paragraph. But there are plenty of articles out there.

Watches are really subjective objects. If you like it means you like it. While I personally would not go for a Chinese made watch but to each his own.

For your budget, I would instead look at seiko. They make good watches from budget to luxury (Grand Seiko). Maybe you can pick up a slightly used Sumo but there are plenty to choose from at sub $1500 range  (SKX009 is one of my fav)

Hope this helps.

perhaps consider japan movement such as orient, citizen, seiko etc.

Hi Danheng1! So according to your comment, i would say that the ingersoll watch is not preferred right?

So how about citizen? Is it okay or others might be better than that? I only know some common brands though. Still new and its actually gonna be my first watch before really getting into collecting others.

Still, thanks for your opinion though! Appreciate it very much. :)

Go with common brands. Seiko, Citizen and Orient have beautiful watches in your price range. Take a look at Seiko SKZ and SRP series. Commonly known as "Stargate" .

I'd lean towards a pre owned Seiko sumo rather than a new ingersoll. Tis is an iconic seiko which is sought after and well made

When my first purchased for a proper watch, I was initially eyeing on Ingersoll watches because they offer many unique design with very attractive pricing. Not 100% unique but undeniably quite a dressy watch. But after much researching that they uses china made movement, I've then decided to up my budget to mido multifort and gotten my first swiss ETA movement. I think if I've gotten one of the Ingersoll I would not be as satisfied as getting a swiss watch.

From all the replies here, I would like to add on that Seiko is the way to go. Google Seiko 007 or 009. It is well within your price range and it is something that stands the test of time...

Seiko SARB series is definitely a must look at this budget.

Orient Bambino (dressy) and Orient Mako (Divevy) also worth a look.

Yeah i was thinking about seiko SARB too since many suggest that particular brand. Is 1400 enough for a brand new watch or a pre owned?

Hi...i agree with most of the forummers....Seiko is indeed a good bet for that price range...Monster is a rather cool watch that is also iconic ....however...personally ..the only drawback is that it is of mineral crystal ...a watch to me, once it gets a single scratch on its glass, would not look so nice anymore ....just my opinion...i'd rather go for anything with Sapphire on it (i.e. tissots, micro brands, tissot)...

Yes ive researched bout sapphire n mineral too. But do entry level tissot offer watches with sapphire glass? And do i have to raise my budget to get one?

If I'm not mistaken, all Tissots are of Sapphire....Some would say that you can easily polish off the light scratches off the mineral glass but Sapphire is a better choice i feel...the tissot autos are prolly in the range of RM3k

I think very important is for you to state the purpose of the watch, I would assume it is for daily usage. Then the next question is what kind of watch u like as your first watch. Dive watch? Dressy abit? Chronograph? By answering this, you can then narrow down your search.

I bought two system 51 swatch. As a watch, not so good. Mine running fast while my wife's running slow. But I digress. Don't jump the gun. Just go hunt around. When I started there's no forum or Internet to get advices. I have a lot of junk automatic watches in my drawers. Add them up and you can get a decent Swiss watch.

Just go look around (new and pre-owned). Impulse buy always ended up with buyer's remorse. At least for my experience. Good luck hunting.

yes i agree well with your idea about impulse buying. if you guys dont mind, do you guys have any suggestions on where to find pre owned watches? and by that i mean stores that i can actually see and feel the watch itself rather than going through online. for now i only know shops that sell brand new watches. :(

Lots of choices, for brand new swiss watch, tissot, hamilton, certina etc all suitable for your price range, just have to hardcore bargain.. lol.

My suggestion would be Seiko. Theres a new prospex model, the re-release of the vintage turtle. You can go check it out. SKX007, 009, a monster or a baby tuna would do.

Wait what bout citizen? Is it ok? Found one at sunway for 774 with sapphire glass. But its still good right with a 40hr power reserve

Sapphire Glass and power reserve sounds good.

Buy what look nice on your wrist and comfortable with your wallet.

The Japanese trio of Seiko, Orient, Citizen usually give tremendous value versus their price and they are usually available locally and you can always try them on your wrist.

Alternatively with your budget, you can take a look at German Brand - Laco (although if you have higher budget, i would have poison you to get Stowa), they have watches with Miyota auto movement (Citizen) and price around 322 to 362 EUR (excluded VAT), which is quite well price for its brand offering. Off course you may have to buy online from Germany and have to bear the shipping + GST, still you should definitely take a look. (I am not sure Malaysia have Laco AD or not)

Alternatively, you can check out one of the online AD of Laco from Singapore (pm me for website)

For example: Laco ROM is only USD410 (shipping included)

Movement: Automatic movement Laco 21, 3 hands
Case: Stainless steel, brushed finish, sapphire glass, case-back with sapphire glass, 5 ATM, case diameter 42 mm, domed crown, 20 mm lug width
Dial: Black mat with Superluminova indexes C3, execution according B-Uhr Baumuster A
Hands: Hour, minute and second black mat with Superluminova inlay C3
Band: High quality stainless steel band with curved endpiece, stainless steel folding buckle with logo "Laco / 1925", 20 mm lug width
Packaging: Black gift box, incl. cardboard box
Made in Germany.
