Title: Suggestion for watch
Post by: saru04 on April 24, 2014, 02:08:38 AM
Hey MWF,

I need to get a new watch for younger brother. My budget for it is around 1k - 1.5k.

What I'm looking for:
1) Automatic
2) For office use (so sports type is fine)
3) Prefer Swiss made (If possible with my budget)
4) Long term
5) Size of casing around 40mm

Don't plan to get Seiko cos he's already using one but its quartz.

Hope to get suggestions here as I do not have much knowledge on watches.

Thank you in advance!

Nah, it doesn't need to be swiss made.

I just prefer it to be swiss made.

choices are very minimum due to the budget. steinhart is a good choice, or maybe orient, orientstar?

Whats the difference between Orient and Orientstar?

Whats the pricing range for Hamilton watches?

I like the design of SEAVIEW DAY DATE AUTO by Hamilton.

orient star movement can hack and handwind.
usually with sapphire crystals and better case.

hamilton i doubt there are any below rm1.5k...
a good start though is the ever popular tissot visodate.

Orient vs Seiko vs Invicta diver.

Which do you think is better? since their price range is similar.

Seiko Shogun is it pricey?

Orient diver is nice but I'm looking for something with date only.

My suggestion is Tissot PRS 516 automatic. A bit higher than your budget but that watch is very nice. The one with leather strap is cheaper than on bracelet, good movement , nice lume  plus it is Swiss Made :)

IMO, Orient and Invicta would be no match to Seiko.
Thought you didn't want to get a Seiko, thus didn't mention anything from Seiko.
The shogun a little pricey for your budget, but you can have a look at the 007, the Monster or the Baby Tuna. All are very well known divers by Seiko, and in your budget too.

There is no AD for Steinhart in Malaysia. I believe most of the Steinhart owners in Malaysia buys it online, from the Steinhart webpage.
Note that the 19% VAT will not be charged in Malaysia, but an additional 30 EUROS will be charged for shipping.
It takes up to 3 weeks for the shipping to complete.

Nope, just 30 Euros and the watch will be shipped to your doorstep.
If I'm not mistaken the webpage only allows payment by PayPal.

Search hard enough and there is an AD for Steinhart down in SG which I believe will cut short the delivery time much as compared to 3 weeks, for a slightly hire price... Just search for Steinhart in Singapore... but if you can wait, the just order directly from Germany...

Not to mention buying from Singapore ADs will be more expensive than from the webpage itself.

Nah no worries.

Most likely ordering direct from their website.

So far anyone tried ordering straight from their website?

Any reviews? Like watch condition when it arrives.

Our bro Andy (andytagheuer) has an Ocean forty-four. You can ask him a little about it.

And what if the bracelet is too loose how do you reduce the link to tighten the watch?

Cos theres no AD here in Malaysia.
You don't have to go to the AD to adjust the bracelet, go to any watch dealers or service centers, they do it for you for free.

I have one more question, will Steinhart Ocean 1 be too big for my brother's wrist?

His wrist measurement is about 6.10" - 6.12".

Steinhart Ocean 1 size is 42mm without the crown. Is that too big on a 6.10" - 6.12"?

Sorry his wrist size is about 6.7" - 6.9".

Now I'm afraid that 42mm without crown is too big.

Will it be too big? Or looks weird on his hand?

6.7"-6.9" will look alright on a 42.

Oh ya he has flat wrist too.
Title: Re: Suggestion for watch
Post by: Everdying on April 26, 2014, 12:31:50 PM
any skinny wrist will look flat la.
and for steinhart its not so much case size, but rather its 50mm very flat lug to lug length that will almost guarantee the lugs will either overhang or float above the wrist.

Does the lug overhang happen for most diver watch?

It doesn't happen because of the type of watch, but the size of the watch.

G shock is much much bigger than 42. The one I have, DW6900 should be around 50mm, and it sits fine on my wrist (my wrist is around 7.3")
