A colleague asked me if he should get a brand new Datejust 2 SS (for around RM18,xxx, with higher discount from grey dealer) or a pre-owned Submariner 16610 for approximately RM17K - RM18K plus. He's also contemplating a pre-owned Sub 16610LV.
Basically he can't make up his mind coz he's torn between getting a brand new Datejust 2 SS for RM18K plus or a pre-owned Sub for only slightly less or just as much (the LV model).
FYI, he said all 3 models "sing" to him; it's only a matter of whether he should spend the moola on a brand new or pre-owned watch that's bugging him.
I told him I'd pose the question here to seek the sifus comments.
What would you tell him?

Dear tancho
I have this situation too. Finally I decided to get the older discontinued model as the new ones he still can get it later.
But really have to be confident that the preowned ones are in good condition.

Imo- save money until he can buy new 16610, dont rush or he will end up with something less or he didnt like much...
-
I would get the LV. Or the 116610LN. :D

the Datejust and Sub is 2 different watches. 1 dressier and the latter being more sporty. it's all depends on his personal preference... ask him a few questions then it might be easier for him to decide what he need (to get first, we know it's not going to be the last )
1. what's the occasion? is it a daily beater or weekend watch or dinner?
2. what's his usual dress code? semi-formal, shirts or jeans with t-shirt etc..
3. how old is he?
if he is into a more classy/dressie look, i would say go for the Datejust.
if not, I would say the Sub is more like an all rounder.
hope it helps

Even submariner can be all round watch. You can make it as dress watch by put it on with leather strap
Like other mentioned Profession and age is key info for us to answer your question..

Thanks to all who gave their insights
He's in his late forties, professional and is quite laid-back and casual. From my perception, both the dressier Datejust 2 or the Sub would suit him as a daily beater. He's basically undecided on getting the new piece or the pre-owned one as both are quite close cost wise.
Not necessarily a bad dilemma to be in, though

If it is a first Rolex purchase, I would go for the DJ II. It will go with suits, jeans and shorts as well. I would rather buy new as compared to preloved. I understand that a discontinued model is more "special"...I would rather go with peace of mind since the watch is new...just my two cents...

Very sensible

Does he want a dress watch or a dive watch?

I think he doesn't mind either. Going by logic, he should get a dress watch as he already has a dive watch of a different make (that's what I told him). But apparently he doesn't mind another. However, he did say he was going back to the AD to have another look at the datejust 2, so I reckon he's leaning towards the new piece.

Well said man..

Perhaps he should try both at the shop. I have recently done so and found the DJ2 to wear quite larger than the 16610. And I am inclined to the DJ2 instead, or rather my wrist haha..

My 2 cents.
Since your friend is considering pre-owned for both Sub and Sub LV, it seems his heart is keen towards the Sub. The only obstacle is pre-owned issue and $$ for brand new Sub.
Why not wait for a few more months, save a few more thousand and then go for a BNIB Sub. BNIB SubC Date 116610LN cost around RM23,xxx.
If he get the Datejust now, he'll still yearn for the Sub and will end up buying the Sub in the future. In the end, he'll end up spending more $
Cure the bug now and go for the Sub.
(although the bug will eventually come back in the form of other more fine timepieces, ie PP, ALS, AP..it never ends)
If any fellow WIS has a cure for the bug, please share the vaccine :)

What is the difference with all the terminology used by grey dealers ...... Brand New In Box (BNIB), some list as NEW ?? What about undated warranty cards ?
-
I'd get subby.

AFAIK, BNIB are watches that are parralel imports or bought by grey dealers. The warranty card will show the watch are sold by overseas ADs, ie Italy, HK, Japan etc. The warranty start date maybe one/two month earlier.
However, all Rolex carry international warranty.
Example of the watch sales cycle.
New vs BNIB
New: Rolex> AD > customer
BNIB: Rolex> AD > grey dealers/bulk purchaser> customer
Again this just my2cents.

new dj2!

tell your friend there's a possibility he'll end up having both....so maybe this dilemma is just a matter of which one he should own.... ;D

haha...  what a fortune teller.... :D :D :D ;)

IMHO, Datejust looks better in two tone.. so a pre-owned Sub would be a better choice between the 2. However, bear in mind that if the pre-owned Sub is more than 5 years old, you might want to factor in an additional overhaul service by RSC which cost around RM2k.

The age old 20million dollars question; This or That........
Have fun while you're at it

Not getting either is also an option. If your friend needs advice on what he wants to get with his hard-earned money, he is not ready to make that choice.

Nice dilemma to have ;D

definitely the sub...the dj2 just doesnt represent the dj family well imo...rather get a normal dj...but if ure looking at a 40mm watch go sub cant go wrong...
-
Hate the datejust 2 i feel the size is too big for what it should be...i love big watches but the dj shud stick to its 36mm imo...go for the submariner i would say
