Hi all,
just to survey around about your experiences about servicing or repairing a watch. As I browse through those official Facebook page of watch brands, I could always see customer posting and commenting that they send in their watches few weeks/months ago but their watch is not done yet and commenting statement like "I've paid this amount of money but I've to wait up to 2-3 months to get it repaired?!"
My experience is that even for a simple Fashion quartz watch, they are would ask me to wait for 2-3 months as they have to order spare parts. So does the waiting period shortened when the amount you paid for the watch is higher?
-
Did overhaul on my Longines LLD at Swatch Malaysia. 3 weeks.
-
Service and bezel replacement for my Seiko diver auto at the KL Seiko service centre took 6 weeks, they said it was a busy period, however, they delivered the same on time.
-
One of my IWC had a loose cannon pinion, and was told needed to be replaced. Local service center had no parts, so was sent Schaffhausen and back. Turn around time was approx. 3 months (which was close to their estimation), with regular updates on the progress. This was still under the warranty service. They've also added on some additional services such as polishing and cleaning as well.
-
Hi sidestreaker, did you send your iwc to richemont? I was actually planning to send my mark xv for a service + polish next week and was wondering what the total time required is.
Any members with experience servicing their iwc at richemont?
-
Never had any issues with RSC either in Malaysia (long time ago) and in Taiwan (current). Always deliver within 2 weeks but in recent months longer due to work load. But no more then 1 month.
-
RSC KL - two weeks complete service on a TT DJ. On the dot, a cheery lady's voice called to collect the watch. Not cheap tho! 8)
-
I had my Rado sintra skeleton send back for repairs(under warranty),they send it back to Switzerland.......came back 3 months later!!
-
Just sent in my Mark xv to a local merchant for servicing and polishing (The shop at The Weld, I believe he has a column at the Merchant's corner). Highly anticipating the finished product!
Hopefully by end of the week!

This is slightly off topic but recently I contact RSC since I flipped my Coke to a friend of mine & he wanted to bring it to Menara Dion to verify the authentication of the watch. To my surprise they told me over the phone that they will do the " authentication" @ a price of rm 248 (I think so, not very sure about the exact cost) but the confirmation is only verbally...No confirmation paper from RSC whatsoever!! So instead of going to RSC I told him to go to any "gray" or AD that he wants to verify it..Imagine paying 200+ only to be told that yr rollie is genuine verbally without any supporting papers/documents to verify it..Anyone knows why coz last time I believe RSC did provide some sort of "confirmation" paper that yr watch is not a knock off stuffs..

maybe too many fake cases, and they can't afford to verify all of them .... still i would feel RM200 for non-chrono should justify the charges.

i always thought a 'confirmation' paper is never provided.
thats why its recommended to send it for a check-up, then at least you get a 'confirmation' of service done, as they of course will only work on it if it's not a fake.

I did this just last week. Asked for service and they took the watch for 25 minutes. I 'decided' not to have it serviced, paid the RM240 and got a receipt, complete with serial number. I took the watch to a store nearby for service, as RSC rules are not sympathetic to vintage watches.

Rm 240 down the drain for 25 mins "viewing"?? :o : Even a full package massage is within the same amount but with longer "time" available!! Hehehehe... :Laughing_on_floor: :Laughing_on_floor:

Quite. It'd be easier to explain my interest in that hobby to my wife too. Or at least to her lawyer.

I can just imagine it now..
"Why is there RM240 short in the pocket money I gave you for this week/month?"
"I err... I umm.. I sent my Rolex to RSC to check for authenticity..."
Soon women will be joining the forum to ask if it's true that RSC charges RM240 for verification but no receipt is provided.

Well, I just got my watch back earlier this week. In conclusion, I can only say I am utterly disappointed.
The watch came back with dust on the dial and runs slow by 10 sec per hour (yes you read it right, per HOUR).
Tomorrow sending it back again for a checkup.
-
Hi,
Actually you just pipped me on getting this piece from John..
Its really a pity that this lovely watch ended up having dust on the dial and the rate has been affected. If this had happened to me, my day would have been spoilt and I'd really be in a foul mood. The shop would no doubt be in for a hard time.
Do keep us all updated on the progress. It may be a good lesson for all of us too.
Did they acknowledge the error and agree to rectify? I believe you had earlier already indicated which shop that you sent it into.
Rgds...

Yes, but let's not be too quick to judge yet. He is coming to personally collect the watch from me at my office tomorrow to send it for checking again. As for the dust in the dial, I actually brought it back earlier this week and he fixed that for me. Now it's just about the timing.
But yea, I am in a real foul mood but I've told myself not to blow my top just yet.
I've even lost my love for that watch and might just sell it after it's fixed. You interested? I'll give it up at a good price if you are.
Oh btw, the watch was just fine when I got it from John, minus the case which needed some light polishing which was the reason why I sent it to polish in the first place, in the end I decided to service it at the same time.
-
Sorry to hear it bro.
Hope everything turn out well.

I'm really having a real tough weekend. I have been so upset with what happened with my watch. All that hard earned money and anticipation down the drain. I just feel so cheated and taken for a ride. In fact, I also swore that I will never ever buy another pre owned watch again.
I also had an impression that the merchants on this forum were at least capable of doing what was advertised but I really doubt that now. My watch can be 1k or 100k but when they take it for a service, to them it is just another piece. I can swear that when my watch was returned to me the first time, the technician did not even check the timing of the watch.
Now that the watch is back with him, I am worried that he will scavenge my watch for parts and put in some lousy parts. How am I to tell, I am no watch maker.
I can only say I totally regret my actions sending my watch to this so called "expert" on MWF.
Sigh, may this be a tough lesson to me and all those reading in.

You must feel absolutely gutted.
That is why I always send watches back to the respective brand's service centre.
You might pay a little more, but with the added security and legitimacy... i'd be worth the extra money paid.
Now regarding this "expert" on MWF.
I am just wondering if there is any open endorsement by MWF?

I too feel for gunsnroses. It is very sad. But in saying that, MWF only provides a platform for merchants to advertise their wares and services. This is done in good faith. MWF do not at any time endorse any of the merchants on the forum.

I fully agreed with TheHobbit,
And the way MWF is operated,I'm very sure that ultimately MWF is a place where watch enthusiast mingle and share each other's joy (or frustration) in our interest without any endorsement to any party or merchants.

any idea how much it will cost to send in e.g. a sub to RSC for regular service?

I m thinking to relume the dial too as the lume on it is not bright. Wonder if anyone here knows a good place or shop in Klang Valley area?

The 6306 was a JDM model so I am not 100% sure if Thong Sia will service it, but you can try. BTW, I just PMed you the contact number of a guy who used to repair most of my vintage Seikos (6309, 6306, 6138, 6105). You may wish to contact him also.. ;) Good luck.
I'll prefer to keep the vintage dial as it is. Once relumed, the collectability of the piece may drop.

It's now RM2,120 for a regular service for a Sub, without replacing any "major" parts. Comes with a complimentary polish and a customary green Rolex pouch and cleaning cloth. They accept credit cards without surcharge.

For the 1st service, just before the end of 2yr warranty, this should be a valid and RSC will service the watch as if regular service right?

During the 2 years warranty period when the watch is first purchased from an AD, RSC will not service your watch unless there is a manufacturing problem with it.

Huh I was told from a watch boutique, you can bring back your watch to service just before the warranty ends. Not sure is this a marketing gimmick so I can buy the watch and save a bit on the maintenance cost. But what if we inform them over the 1-2yr period the rate is not satisfactory e.g. like average 7s per day, will they take back to regulate for free and without any other service?

Regulate the time yes, and any other manufacturing defects.
But not overhaul, unless it has been agreed upon.

Sorry to hear about your experience with the service. I sent an old datejust to the same place for servicing and I've kept it on my winder for the past 12 days to monitor the timekeeping. Fortunately it is keeping time within COSC standards and the polishing job was sympathetic to the age of the watch too. I'd consider using them again, at least for Rolex servicing.

Just wondering how the authenticity check is made; do they check the serial number only? What if its a fake using a real serial number; or it's a real case but the movement has been replaced with an inferior one
-
I don't know about checking serial numbers against a master list. It may be that they simply verify that everything is as per the original spec. I'm sure someone on here will know the full story. Having bought the watch used I was happy to know it was all Rolex.

wow, really not cheap to maintain a ROLEX ... RM2,210 easily 10% of the market value or more for the Sub. My goodness ... so those who are saving to buy a ROLEX or pre-owned, make sure you know the cost involved for the maintainenace as well

Servicing an Omega will cost approx. RM 1,600 without parts.
If that scares you, you'll freak out if you service an AP.... its 5 figures.

I presume the RM1,600 is for SS Omega.. Few months back I took an old Titanium Prof Seamaster Chrono using Valjoux 7750 movement for overhaul service, was quoted RM2,900 plus. A replacement Ti link for the bracelet costs RM312, probably more now. :o

My IWC inge went for service as it stopped working. Its an few years old watch so i just dropped at richmont service center in KL.
Waited 3 mth plus for the whole thing to be done. They insists the watch itself to go to switzerland to service instead of Singapore. Maybe it is because the movement is the IWC inhouse movement.
Anyway the service cost me RM1500 and i think they changed stuff inside the watch as i noticed the watch is more firm when manual winding. No idea what they did to the watch as they dont list out in service paper. On the other hand, My watch was given 2 years warranty.
-

Seriously!!! Would that be a regular 2 to 3 year cycle maintenance service or a 5 yr cycle complete service?
That really defines 'Pay to Play'
-
When you buy a watch, you also gotta think of the cost of ownership as well. Same goes to car but then it is not as expensive as car in long term.
-
I can totally understand that reality. It's just that I'm curious on the service rates of these ultra luxury brand.
Off topic: Makes you think, that if your children do inherit that timepiece that we keep for the next generation, it ought to come with the correct amount of inheritance to keep it in the family (and still running).

Watches are bad inheritance. Better just sell 'em all off, enjoy the money and they can whatever cash is left after you check out.

Quartz, is cheaper to change battery every 3 to 5 years... Its more accurate... But then its not as appealing n as nice

most swiss quartz watches are advise to change battery every 2 yrs.
battery will leak after 2 yrs... the chemical leak from battery will damage the movement.
-
Yea, and its much cheaper compared to servicing mechanical watches.
-
Quartz watch are not cheaper because my wife ebel bought in 1999 changing
was only rm30 at hg and others. In 2010 changing bat.. cost rm100 to rm120
now the watch change new bat..... last a few months only. Last went to ebel
ebel centre in kl, the technician say it very old movement not worth repair.
Ask other watch service can around rm700 - rm1000 the watch bought for rm1200
with a 5 years warranty repair one time under warranty change circuit board at LV
service centre.

It's now RM2,120 for a regular service for a Sub, without replacing any "major" parts. Comes with a complimentary polish and a customary green Rolex pouch and cleaning cloth. They accept credit cards without surcharge.
wow, really not cheap to maintain a ROLEX ... RM2,210 easily 10% of the market value or more for the Sub. My goodness ... so those who are saving to buy a ROLEX or pre-owned, make sure you know the cost involved for the maintainenace as well
My 1601 stop sent to rsc in 1998 they qoute estimate rm 5000plus
At that time maintaining service was rm1250
My sent to third party service cost me rm400, part change/returned to me
the winding spring broken to 3 parts.

I personally would always sent to the authorized service centre. I would rather have that peace of mind the parts being replaced are original. Sure other independant service centre may be cheap at least 50%, but I will always have this nagging feeling of "ori or not"?
As for the frequency of servicing, my Rolex 16233 was previously serviced in Singapore way back in 2000 after that it was serviced again at Wisma Dion sometime Sept 2013. Cost me 1950 to overhauled it plus replacement of a new crown (as my old crown has a dent on it) + the usual polishing. Hey!! not bad after 13 years of usage. Can surely last for another 10 years ++. My Rolex 116613LB would probably run for the next 5 years before its due for servicing. Now it all depends if the owner can last that long... :Praying:
Oh, when they checked my watch, they verbally informed me that my last service was done in Singapore in 2000. Impressive.
Peace...

You want to send the watch back for service before the warranty is over it would not cover full service.
Knowing there is lubrication and all inside, close to the warranty expiry date, go and use a hair dryer and blow the case back until hot, then you compare the timing with your clock and see if it deviates or stops before the power reserve is up. Don't put it in the oven because that will melt the seals, hair dryer shouldn't be hot enough for that. :Laughing_on_floor:
Or you can also rub a really strong magnet to magnetize it, then the timing will run. Complain and get full service. :-X
