I was just wondering why is panerai so famous? As i look at the brand, most of model look similar with no much different. I can't even differentiate what model is the watch just by looking.
Mind sharing what so special about panerai? :-\
-
Stirring the hornet's nest? Try using the search function here and read a few threads, then you'll know why it's famous
-
Popular or famous?
Can't answer for the rest, but I like them because I like my watches large due to the fact that I have a large wrist (read fat). I like my watch toolish and robust and perhaps even value for money. Panerai seems to fit the bill (at that time). I like the fact that it use to be limited in production numbers, hard to get, and a military secret. Ok maybe not the last one. I like the simple dial layout, minimalist in approach and easy to read at a glance. Sadly, all these are no longer true of the brand. As such, I no longer buy them new but rather preloved and only specific models. I still like the watches they make, but they are moving up the food chain. However there is a replacement in Tudor. They (Tudor) are currently at where Panerai was back in 1997/1998.

Famous due to Stallone wear it
It's a Hollywood thing
All the big guy in Hollywood wear it
So man!
The design play a part, simple, military, highly legible.... N It's one hell of a big macho watch when the world still on small watches!
On top of that, the strong DNA of its luminor crown guard on cushion case... U can tell this is a Pam from 10m away....
So u will fell in love to it.... Or just hate it!
Then when it bcom popular, the demand is higher then supply....
Watch kaki ard the world knowing its presence Bcoz, it never on the display of any AD!
It was like steel Daytona those day....

More at fault would be cash-rich buyers who know nothing about watches and were recommended to buy them by sellers. Advertising is good eh?

Dpkong: No interest of stirring the hornet. Just wondering what make consumer crazy for the brand. It could be either history, movement, design, pricing, limited production or others. I have go through the forum, i found IWC, Omega and especially Tudor have some interesting model but not Panerai. Yet, i still c many Panerai watch posted and wanted to know why . There must be a reason people choose it.
I do agree with chrisyen. The luminor crown guard do look good and is an attention grabber. :) i love that too.

Among the above choices, I'd say it's others
Most people chose it because it's Panerai. Just like how everyone wanted a Pajero in the early 90s..

For a newbie like me,while lurking for my 1st luxury watch the salesman let me tried pam372 and i strictly fall in luv at the first sight...its so simple but yet gorgeous..i dont know n dont care about movement so for me it has the x factor, unluckily i dont grow money tree at my backyard..

Hahaha...it happens to me except i'm not cash rich buyer :HammerHead:

Panerai is sooo famous that it could use unfinished movements in their watches and fans are still happy because it could one day become a priceless collectible. Soo power! ;D

I figure this happens across the board with all brands, no?

Now that we have establish why Panerai is so famous, we now need to establish why it is so popular.
-
unwanted mistakes/blunder is the real "limited edition"
My personal "chart"
back when I'm 20's - I wanted a TAG, (I can't afford)
now I'm 30's, I want a Panerai. (I cant' afford, I mean I could but would require sacrificing many other things)
But when I'm 50's, I "would" want a Rolex.
-
all i can say is, PAM watch is very nice looking, worth it or not is up to individual
to be actual all watch are over priced compare from their cost... :p
-
Oh panerai, watch snob liked it so much

Why PAM famous?
- Due to watch magazines, celebrities, watch forums...etc
Why PAM popular?
- Due to strap changing, good resale value, good looking...etc
-
cos they have a 'support' group so ppl can come out of the closet and dont feel embarassed anymore :P
-
tried on the 16610 the other day & thought it was what I always wanted , until I put on a 176 , totally fell in love with it , tho manual winding n plain jane . I guess it's just the power of attraction :)

I don't think power attraction only apply PAM.. Basically all watch have the power of attraction.. Just a like Tudor Pelagos, when i put it in my hand.. totally fell in love with it.. ;D
Unfortunately, just not enough fund to bring it back. :P

I like it because it is unique.

I guess if you make just one thing and you make it good, customer will always come back for it.
Just like that uncle that has been frying cha kui tiau for the past 30 years on the street, people will drive more than 1 hrs just to eat there.

If you are presenting this as fact, I'd like to see some real marketing research info to back this up. It's just an opinion on your part, albeit a common one held against "brand x" you are prejudiced against. This canard by the way does not reflect on the merit (or the lack of) of the watch itself. I've heard the same applied to Rolex.
In fact, this accusation can be leveled at about just every mass marketed luxury brand.

Whether Donald was presenting his statement as a fact or just his opinion, it does not really matter. He was presenting it as a watch hobbyist and surely that in itself is good enough for this site, which is primarily a site for watch hobbyists. Real marketing research? Ahem, ahem...I think you are on the wrong site buddy.... ;)
In any case, I believe Donald was just adding to what Chris was writing. Don't believe he was referring to any specific brand.

As watch hobbyists we are all better served by real information. Not innuendos, falsehoods, half truths, exaggerations and outright biased opionions masquerading as "fact". But this is the internet, feel free to distort whatever I have stated to serve whatever agenda you have in mind.... Buddy... ( <--- sarcasm pointer for the obtuse)

I seem to have missed the part in the Forum Rules which say that our posts must only be facts based on "some real marketing research".
Whatever, I'm going to take the advice in your signature and stop arguing about this ( <--- sarcasm pointer as well )

Strong emotion is ok. But calling other members obtuse which means stupid is more serious. It looks like any discussion with regards to this particular brand always leads down the same road. We appreciate that there are those who don't like the brand and as there those that like the brand but perhaps we can all take a step back, take a deep breath and answer the OP question and not get personal. We are all adults here and lets not turn this into some playground fight.

No problem, Harken. Let's not make an issue out of it. After nearly 20 years in my profession, the skin gets rather thick. In fact I did not even realise it until you mentioned it. Perhaps a bigger sarcasm pointer is needed!!
Add: Hey Hobbit, since you appear to be an old hand when it comes to this famous brand, care to recommend a nice model for a sceptic like me? What do you think of the PAM00512 as a dress watch? ;)

Why is Pam famous? I like this thread.
Imo:
1. It fills the gap for ppl wanting somethin rugged & loud w/o having to pay top $
2. It kinda level the playing field - no one can boasts having to know Pam longer than another cos its 're-introduction & re-positioning' is relatively new
3. Mostly metal w/o frills, no stones or solid gold(afew exception)
4. For 20k or rest, beautiful packaging w tools & straps. A enigmatic history.
5. Add-on accessories. So same watch but diff variants
6. A great bonding among fans. Many forums w enthusiatic members.
7. Underdog- trying to take on the Goliaths. E'ry one loves a fairy tale.
8. Mechanism aside - strong DNA and easily recognisable
9. The emergence of gen Y, internet, smartphone n Pam
10. The brilliant minds at Richemont.
Seriously, love loathe or nonchalant, Panerai is the marketing success story.

What do you think of the PAM00512 as a dress watch? ;)
The PAM00512 is a nice watch but it is 42mm. I like the size and the design. The movement is not to bad either. The only issue is if you can live with the lack of minute markers and the ecru lume. And of course other paneristi asking you why 42mm and not the 47mm, not realizing how silly some of them look with 47mm watches on their wrist. I have an 8 inch wrist and at best I can carry the 44mm luminor and the 45mm radiomir. Nothing bigger, I tried.
If you don't like the 1940 case design, and still want to maintain the 42mm size, there is the PAM00337 or PAM00338. Basically same watch, different material, with the PAM00337 in stainless steel and the PAM00338 in titanium.
If you want the minute markers, and at 42mm, you are left with the PAM00523. But it is white dial, with date and 42mm. Not really the DNA of Panerai. But I like it. I started with the PAM00003 and still have it.
As for the PAM00532, I like it, minus the case back inscription, which is rather cheesy. But the rest of the watch is great. Sadly it's 47mm and 9,200 Euro. At the price range, there are other options, other brands to look at.
Hope that helps.

Thanks. Advice noted. IMHO, 42mm is just perfect considering the 512 appears rather thin. Lack of minutes markers is also fine since this looks more like a dress watch. No worries about the Paneristis too; our paths do not converge. You are right about watches being too large. My 46mm 3236 Inge is already far too large for my 8 inch wrist though it's not uncomfortable to wear. Besides the silly look, wearing a watch that's too large also raises the centre of gravity so you have a higher chance of falling flat on your face and damage your brain when you are not careful on the stairs... ;D. OK, best to avoid these.
Hmmmm.....I just read about the PAM532 this morning. Well, look at the bright side. At least someone had the good sense to just stop there and not add "bro, u earn my full respect. I salute u" or something just as meaningless onto the caseback.

I'm STILL really happy the Condor is nowhere to be sighted....phew...... :D :D :D

The short and simple answer to the question in this topic is: Panerai is so famous due to the marketing genius of Richemont since its acquisition in 1997. Prior to that, Panerai was also famous and popular, but to a niche group of watch enthusiasts. Richemont essentially made it famous and popular in the global scene. No doubt, Stallone played his part too. It was Richemont that expanded distribution and product line-up. Lately Panerai is investing in own manufacture movement too to be synonymous with a true watchmaker.
Tracing back its 150 years or so history, Panerai made instruments for the Italian navy, which included wristwatches that can stand the rigours of navy use. But it was never a watchmaker per se. Hence you see some Panerai models where Rolex made the movements, case and crown. Some of its custom and limited production for specific requirements of the navy has now been monetised and reissued as sought after limited editions.
No doubt, the heritage and history of Panerai was interesting and significant, and the reason why a brand story can be built around it so successfully. You see others branding similarly, like Bell & Ross and Bremont, but not to the level of passion and enthusiasm that only one with Italian roots can.

very well said, sum up everything in short

Bell & Ross and Bremont don’t have quick release system or conventional 1.6mm screw driver system… that's why they failed.. :Laughing_on_floor:
no offense to Bell & Ross and Bremont brand and fans..
I like Bell & Ross too but haven’t own one yet because it look too big on my wrist even with those 42mm model..

Very well sum up.. So in the end, it is the good marketing strategic with include some history that make brand what it current today... Even i don't really admirer the brand or its model, but i do understand when you have one of your favorite actor/actress wearing it and it look great... it tend to poison you to get one as well :D

It has a standalone DNA. From far you would already have known it's a PAM.
Its simple, elegant and matured image caters well for working professional's taste. My all time favorite
-
I would say well known instead of famous.
Reasons: all of the above cos people buy for various reasons.
Make no mistake, Say what you want, Pam is right up there.
A case study on brand building and keeping your supporters fire burning.
I am not a Panerai fan though I have one pc (disposed another), it doesnt stop my admiration for their good efforts all round. Lets call a spade as such instead by other names.

IMHO, is all about marketing strategy that's why the supply/demand are growing tremendously.
