MIH or keep the $ for my next grail?
« on: May 07, 2013, 07:31:45 PM »
ok guys..another "what do you think" thread.

i just sold my cartier santos 100 XL Chrono (glad i did because it's been a white elephant and it looks like a pair of cuffs on my tiny wrist). with this cash in my wallet...the itch starts again and i'm thinking of finding a replacement.

i chanced upon a pre-loved MIH watch (i can get it tmr) and i'm kinda interested in it. it's a simple and unique watch with a lot of complications (annual calendar being one of them). it's not often that this watch appears in the forum. oh, i also lack an annual calendar watch in my collection. here's the review: http://www.ablogtowatch.com/mih-watch-review/ or
http://www.mih-watch.ch/index.php?page=167

oh, i'm also a bit concerned about where to service this MIH watch after i buy it...eventhough it's using 7750 movement...it's complications that seem pretty complex to me...not sure if any local watch repairers can do the job or i've to send to back to HQ (and i'm a bit wary of sending watches overseas...skali it get lost on the way there/back....how??).

and many of you also know that i've been wanting to buy a RG dress watch so maybe i should set aside ths $$ for it? i kinda like the following watches (and torn between them):

1. RM10 (always been my grail)
2. Laurent Ferrier Galet Traveller
3. Hautlence Destination 2
4. Harry Winston Midnight/Midnight Big Date

For watch 1-3, my only concern is who can service it if they go bust? Like Alain Silberstein/Wyler...not only servicing is a problem...the timepieces literally depreciates over 80% or more when they go bust (i don't think it's appropriate to use the word "worthless" here). I would like to try to own a timepiece from an independent but do i've to resign to the fate of this possiblity? the cost of any of these watches is not cheap....

advice and comments please....

cheers

james

Get the MIH.
As the MIH if you read the links you yourself provided, even the annual calendar complication was achieved with very little extra parts.
The production might stop anytime when the funds needed has been reached and your money would go to a "worthy cause".

1- RM aint gonna go bankrupt in any foreseeable i predict.
2- LF is a very new brand and the asking price is over 100k. I seen the tourbillon model when i was in SG past 2 weeks.
3- Hautlence already been into some financial trouble before.
4- HW being in a big group if you like the design i would say go for it.

What is the price of the pre-loved MIH?

Might as well get the in-house movt / MIH complication Zenith Captain Winsor....

One who loves the MIH likes it for its simplicity and looks.
So IMO to suggest another brand and model defeats this purpose.
Thats just me though.

To me the MIH will be remembered as one of the icon of our time.
For the design, idea, execution and meaning of this project.

sometime for me function is one thing, i still prefer to have a nice looking watch instead of function watch such annual calender etc, the more complicated the more headache u will have in future, unless you really need it

MIH for me is a bang for bucks not so perfect annual calender watch and yet simple looking, 1st sigh at the watch it tells me of Fortis watch looks alike, but equip with hidden treasure function into the watch where many do not knows

i'd say go for it if the watch hits your heart, for me i'd go for more unique design watch if i have extra bucks rather than function  :)

I admire Ludwig Oeschlin's horological work whether in the earlier UNs or the MIH and now his ochsundjunior range...

Ludwig's greatest work to me has to be this....

The only similarity between the MIH and Zenith is only the inventor of the extra added module.
I would not call them brothers as both uses a completely different movement.

Brand new - CHF5500
Pre-owned - it's hardly available in pre-owned market but it should be 45%-50% off thereabouts (depends on negotiation)?

I would say good luck finding a used MIH for 45% off retail.
Those who sell that i have seen at most 15-20% off ori price.
That watch holds its value very good.

I found one at 35% off retail now...am still trying to push down the price further. if seller is willing to let go at 40%-45% off original, it'll be another good bargain.

I won't wait. Maybe I will. I own the MIH for a few years for now. It's a superb watch in terms of value for money and horological design

The MIH is hand assemble by Paul Gerber while the Zenith is ... ... well ... I don't know  ;D

Being a 7750 movement service parts are cheap and easily sourced. Making the MIH the lowest maintenance independent piece I personally aware of.

Just learn about MIH today. The more I read, the more I like it.
And around RM11K for an annual calendar, that's a surprise.

The month disc is also repeated. I think it should also change twice. maybe once every 15 days? Tyler, can you please confirm this?

Hmm, that's odd, because I'm pretty sure that the month disc is also double printed, as is the day disc.

Does anyone know how accurate the MIH is n which grade of 7750 was used as d base.
There's quite a huge difference in quality ,finishing between the entry level and the chronometer grade 7750
