Watch hunt in KL (4-6 Jan 2013)
« on: January 07, 2013, 07:56:57 PM »

There are a few watches that have been on my mind but in order to finalise a "2013 wishlist", I had to find them and try them on for size and view them in real life before deciding on a target for 2013. When the opportunity came for a trip to KL to attend the MWF anniversary dinner, I knew this was the best time to kill two birds with one stone. Below are pictures taken at the various ADs and boutiques.

I find myself strangely attracted to chronographs. The 26320 is too large for me mainly because of the lugs. I find it overly large on my wrist although the larger dial makes the chrono counters less cluttered. The panda dial 26300 is really nice in pictures and the silver surface is even more enticing in person. It really sparkles as the watch is moved in the light. The downside is that the "bling" makes the dial somewhat difficult to read. But who wears a watch to tell time right?  ;D

As I've never been a fan of black dials, I was quite surprised that I somehow liked this dial over the silver panda. The white hands on the black dial was a perfect contrast.

The letdown was the old style clasp on the 26300.

This black dial 15300 had the upgraded clasp, similar to the ones on the 15400. The SA told me there is one blue dial in the safe on hold for a customer but if I wanted it, it's first-come-first-served. Very little discount. He offered to show me but I declined as I am still undecided. The SA gave me a nice catalogue to bring home and let the poison sink in.

Next stop..

The 5167 on bracelet. I had wanted to try one with the rubber strap but they didn't have it. The dial is beautiful and my heart skipped a beat. Somehow, this almost felt like THE ONE   But I wanted to try the 5711 first. The SA also gave me a nice catalogue as well. This was at the Fahrenheit AD and the SA told me they're closing down the PP section and moving it to Suria KLCC by the end of the month. I asked if there was a closing down sale  :P and she said no..  :(

So off I went to KLCC and tried this..

They did not have the 5711 in stock but they had this. I was told it was the same as the 5711 except it's slightly thicker to accommodate the chrono movement. The dial is the same minus the chrono counter. I know everyone says the blue is the best but somehow, I am seriously attracted to the white. And this has the chrono which I like in a watch, but I feel the plain 5711 has a more balanced dial.

Now the problem is that I really would like an AP first, but the PP wear so much better on my wrist size...

Thanks for reading and I still haven't got an answer on which one  :HammerHead:

I have both ROO and nautilus. I bought ROO first and nautilus later. Honesty you wont go wrong with either. offshore is very thick and masculine. RO is kind of good. Nautilus is very comfortable wear. Trust me, you will end up buying both somehow later  :Laughing_on_floor:

White dial with nautilus is fine. But I will prefer white dial on 5711. 5980 has to be either black or blue. 5726 has to be black.

Anyway, just grab either APRO or nautilus. You wont regret. Personally, I like offshore slightly better than nautilus i must say. But nautilus is something i have been eying for quite some time and feel very happy to own it eventually.

Good luck hunting.

damn fine choices Donald.

After the GTG that night i was looking at a few AP as well! i swear our taste is quite simliar. I was going for a Panda dial AP but i prefer the 26170.

I think from talking to you and seeing your past posts you have a love relationship with the Nautilus and maybe i suggest go for that bad boy! Looks good!

If you're going to the KLCC branch and you want some company, give me a PM, would love to join you in your purchase for that beauty. I have to go back there to collect something anyway from one of the SA.

(after many comments on my username, i decided to shorten the name so as not to mislead anyone)

Wears better, has a nice display back.

Although I love the AP RO (not ROO) and Nautilus, I'd take the Nautilus anyday over a AP RO, unless the Nautilus is > twice the price..

I will go for PP Nautilus between the 2, it will tone down your bad-ass image  ;D

That's exactly the reason I told Primus & co that night why I never dared step into the PP boutique....
I only have a vague idea...
I assumed that since Primus's PP is solid gold and has complications, it shld be way higher than the simple 2 handed Nautilus.. (I asked Primus the price of his)...Isn't the Nautilus just slightly over the base 6 figures..

Last I was quoted for PP Nautilus at Taipei 101 Boutique is NTD839k = RM86000 give n take a little... And of course... no discount.
I asked how much is the discount? The sales person said that for ppl looking for the Nautilus, they dun ask about discount... they ask if they have stock... Wow... right... out the door I go.

I would tell them that if you want to make commission from my sale, you have to play ball or someone else gets the commission.

JOS2012, the SA at the Suria KLCC is a very "dangerous" person.

She insisted on me trying on this 5980 even though I specifically said I only want to see the 5711. After I succumb to her offer, she was then trying to persuade me to look at the Annual and Perpetual Calendars that she has in the safe  :o ... which I luckily declined. I don't need more temptations and diversions now  :-\

It's quite safe to visit if you keep your credit cards and cheque book at home..

 :Laughing_on_floor:

Now that I've tried the 5980, it lingers in my mind...

Actually the Nautilus is more than double the RO price.

I think list price for the Nautilus 5711 is just under double the list price for the AP RO and about the same as the AP ROO but discount levels make the actual selling price for the AP ROO lower.

The Nautilus 5980 in steel costs more than the Annual Calendar in WG or YG   ???

If it was me, and since the ROO and Nauty are about the same price new, i would go for the Nauty.

Wears better, has a nice display back.

Yes. The display back is what attracts me more to the RO and Nautilus and not the ROC or ROO.

both are must have  :Laughing_on_floor:

ap ro is on my to get list for 2013.

the nautilus is the next logical step.

That would be the natural acquisition phase but I'm thinking why progress one step at a time? Why not do it the "Primus way"? Less pieces to flip later.

I will go for PP Nautilus between the 2, it will tone down your bad-ass image  ;D

me?? bad-ass??  ???   :mooning:

And the poor Aquanaut got no mention at all? No one likes it? I did think the hands look a bit off with their sharp corners. But the idea of buying it on a bracelet and then getting a rubber strap option to change around is tempting. It does have the display back as well. Did I mention it's at least 10k cheaper?

It seems opinions are stacked in favour of the Nautilus. And seeing G.MAC pictures just further nudges the vote. The light is beginning to show at the end of the tunnel. Now will it be 5711 or 5980.... ??

The thought does float in the mind to acquire the PP first and then see if I still think of the AP RO or ROC  :HammerHead:

Great meeting w you at the gtg.

Come what may, the name PP evokes master craftmanship in the watch industry. How can one go wrong w an advertisement that PP is and shall be a part of the heirloom. With an astronomical price, it makes the brand all the more desirable.

Go PP anytime, ie if you have the means, afterall it is an investment!?

It was great meeting all you guys as well.

And I forgot to add, one requirement is that the watch has to be suitable as a daily beater and the occasional pool dip. Hence, the preference for a rubber strap after my experience with the steel and steel/gold bracelet on the Daytona.

Wow Donald

Having taken a serious look at both your models, i'm shocked to find out the 5980 and 5711 in terms of pricing is absolutely far apart!  what choices!

I know you'll hate me for this, but if you are considering the 5980, at that price for stainless steel, why don't you take a dip into the Complications Range as well and see what turns your fancy. May i be so bold as to recommend the 5396, which i know the KLCC branch has in stock. Its the same price for the 5980. Just something for you to consider.

Joseph the Nautilus has base models that is lower priced than the Complications models, starting from RM84k+++, but don't let that fool you, the Nautilus has models that goes up to RM160k (with complications as well offcourse), well within the mid upper range of the Complication range. I think the Nautilus is a fantastic classic PP look. And its hard to compare the different collections within Patek Philippe, i personally prefer the round complication collection designs over the Nautilus design but i know alot of people absolutely love the Nautilus collections.

I've never dared even think abt getting a new PP up to now.. :Blue:

All this PP talk suddenly cropped up very recently by pure coincidence after your post and also the MWF Dinner where you brought your PP for all to drool over… ???

Since I dare not step into the PP boutique, perhaps u can pm me the US site where d prices are listed for me to get a feel of the damage to be expected....u were saying multiply d listed price by 3.5?
