haha... very sound advise from all here..

I myself is a newbie to this hobby. I bought my first wrist watch when I got my first work's bonus. Nothing fancy, just a quartz Tissot. As I progresses thru life, I picked one or two along the way, just to be able to choose and change according to mood. Still, not big into watches, yet.

But my perspective on watched changed. I wanted a watch to fit the occasions that I will partake in.
A dress watch, swimming, jogging, hiking, car track/driving, lepak-ing etc..
As I surf and learn the mechanics and passion of watches from the internet, I was totally attracted to watches more now than before. The readings fueled my passion for watches, but still I stay true to my first intention for getting watches.

I even got a plastic-type Addidas digital watch that I used when travelling in and around China on business trips. Beats the hassle of needing to take off my watch at the scanners.... ;D

I was newbie before, and I did share this experience with DC. No matter how "Gang Ho" the advise is. It is better to let individual go through the mentality cycle;

1) Let them think watch is for investment, after a few round of burning
2) Let them have impulse buying, so some of us can acquire cheaper price in the 'Sale section"
3) Let them try different brand, so they will value more on the Grail

Simple rule, if you tell the kid not the play with fire, they will never understand. Let them try once, they will never argue with you...

Just my 16 cents of worth, my cents keep increasing... :Laughing_on_floor:

True, true for most people who doesn't want to heed seniors' advices.
For me, the advices from the "watch sifus" here is as precious as our "grails". It is just that human nature and incessant "poisons" that may make one sway from his/her original intention to pursue their "grail".

I must add that it is Good Advices from G.Mac & Gigi for most newbies like me.

Any advise from sifus here is much more personal and from experience. Not so much thou for shops out there...( not all..).
After all, they are in the business of making monies. But I do respect some who really and sincerely wanted to teach you "the rope" about watches.
Final and most common sentences for "what is the best watch to buy?" the answers are usually -  "depends on how deep your pocket is...." haha...

Hmmm......Is this one of the 'tricks of the trade' to watch collecting? ;)

My dream for my 1st grail is a good rolex - sub or explorer.

After surfing thru this forum a bit, I find myself opening up to other makes as well.  Too much poison in the forum!?! :-\

problem is sometimes u have a target and as you are searching for your target something else comes along and sweeps you off your feet...so you have to up your budget a few times higher than your initial target and then poof your other half sees a smaller version of the watch which sweeped you off your feet so you have to double that upped budget as well :o

so my advice is...if you're looking for a watch, make sure you set aside budget at least 6 - 8 times the price of the target watch  :Laughing_on_floor: :Laughing_on_floor:

Yes, too much "poison".

For me it is the other way around. My 1st grail target is a Seiko. Along the way came Russian watches, military & pilot watches. Still taking "antibiotics" to negate whatever "poison" has been absorbed.

Still the "mother of all poison" is still taking effect and the next grail for me will be a Rollie (maybe a year or two from now).

yo gigi...you said it well here

Lastly
Enjoy the hobby and PLEASE don't judge people by what watch are they wearing like what those people in watchshop does :)

A person who may owned a few humble seiko vintage diver can be more WAY MORE PASSIONATE than a person who bought gazillion ringgit watch but do not know anything about it.

Enjoy the hobby and smile like the girl in my avatar... lol  :Laughing_on_floor:

newbie...u wanna good investment....buy shares, land, houses, property, gold, oil, or even buy cash in other form of currency....

u buy watches, you appreciate the world of horology.....sometime u get away with good price when u need to sell but that is just bonus....stay within popular demand could help in maintaining a good price...even folk here selling PAM and Rollies at lower than market price when they want to get quick cash....yes some make money but not all...

so if really u have that money for investment...invest on other thing first....

Hope I'm not breaking any rules with this post.
Since this thread is for newbies, and I am new to this hobby, can I ask the Sifus here this.
There are many shops that sell pre-owned watches. In your experience, how do you check or find out if;
a) the shop / seller is honest with his claims.
b) the authencity of the watch that you are interested in?
Thanks in advance for the advices

My rule is simple, invest your money into property & gold. Profit gained from these investment can be used to buy watch :) Do not use your hard earned money to buy expensive things like watches. People always say watch is not an investment but think twice as with US currency going down, some people actually buy watches from the states at lower price and sell it in Malaysia at higher price :) Some smart people are actually making profit from buying and selling watches.

For me whatever it is, as long as you dont go loaning from Along to buy watch & your monthly expenses is ok ( all the necessity paid & have savings every month ), the extra dosh is yours to spend.

hm...maybe one that will accept and give you back a decent trade-in price if you decided to sell the watch back to him.
Authenticity - shop that declares it in writing. If they are coy about this, walk away.

If you walk into those shop, most of them are business man, they need to take care of the rent, stocks, and all the running costs. If they sell you at low price, sure something fishy. If sell you at high price, then you walk away. Unless you know some of them, or tag along with some sifus here when we organize GTG, then explore a few times before you pull the trigger, now of course, there is no free lunch la, you got to pay to gain ma. Sifus also human being, need to eat and drink ma... :Laughing_on_floor:

Alternative, buy from MWF's Sale section, some are reputable seller here, some with huge discounted price and it is authentic. This one is FOC, no need pay to gain...

Just my 16 cents

Ai ya ya siodee, ............. dun start a bad preceedance lah, newbie will shy away from future gtg woh, how ah?

To be honest and frank, most of our gtg....where foods and drinks are concerned....its AA style...where how much you have (eat.drink) is how much you should pay. I hope this will do away the shyness from many of our members attending the gtg...unless you're are buddy x 2 with a fellow members and buy his/her drinks/dinner, etc.

Having said that, I can also accept drinks from anyone who is willing to do so...as a token of appreciation, if any......
