Complication or Brand?
« on: February 09, 2011, 11:19:04 PM »
So my question is this,
Would you pay more for a brand? Or more for a complication?

For example, you have 3 choices

a. Expensive brand, simple watch
Maurice Lacroix, Pontos, PT6227 Black Dial
Baume & Mercier, Classima Executive, 8689

b. Not so expensive brand, more complications
Oris, Artelier Complication, 01 581 7592 4054-07 5 21 71FC
Seiko, Premier, SNP005P1

c. Minimal value brand, high complication
Chinese Tourbillon from SeaGull (chinese brand)
Or any Chinese Tourbillon from ebay

Assuming all 3 choices cost the same, which would you buy?

your survey is too wide and not specific enuf. i suggest better to put a price range on each catogary. diff ppl with diff income have the diff terms of expensive and not so expensive.

all of them ARE roughly similar in price

ML pontos is about 5000
B&M classima is about 6000

Oris artelier about 5000
Seiko premier about 2000?

Chinese tourbillon is about 5000

Hm... none of the options fits my profile. I think it has to do with individual direction assuming one is a:

1) Serious collector
2) Enthusiast
3) Hogger - Volume of watches being a priority (if this category even exist - i know there is)
4) Pls fill in if there's any more...

I am generally skewed towards Japanese brands overall and as for complication, not a big issue with me as most watches - assuming mechanical - which has high complications are mainly dress watches. Im more a sports watch person and like my dress watches to be simple 3 hand or with date/day complication (if you can even call it that). Well, high complication models beyond, day/date, chrono features are usually way above what I can afford anyway and I dont like mechanical perpetual calendar variants - too much fuss although i can appreciate the art of it.

I dunno if I'm right but I think what you mean is that if the price is similar say rm6k,
Will you get an entry level luxury brand watch with no complications.
Juz 3 hands for seconds, minutes and hours... or spend the money on an unknown brand with more complications.
I might be giving some bad examples coz I'm not too sure what complications can 6k get you... maybe a chronograph?
But If it were me, I would go for what I want within the budget allowed...
At one point, I wanted a mechanical chronograph but I will still want a piece that speaks to me and fulfill my own criteria, rectangular shape, rubber strap, mechanical auto chrono... and I got that in the Pontos that I have, within my budget...
If unlimited budget... Zenith Port Royal Open without any 2nd thoughts...
But until then, I will have to make do with my Pontos at the moment...  ;D
I own a ML as well and all I can say is their watches are of excellent quality and eventhough I overpaid for it (according to many ppl) I still love it to bits...
The Pontos that you're looking at is actually almost the same as mine minus the chronograph function if I'm not mistaken.
But I can see why you like it, it's sleek... stand out frm the other watches in your list. (shape wise)
I answered the middle one coz I am currently looking at mechanical alarm and a minute repeater watch.
Both is abit pricey but if I can get the complication with an OK brand (dunno what constitutes OK)
I will buy it without hesitation if it fits my budget and the design is of my liking.

Terrenceterrence "seriously, i think buying a watch for it's secondhand value is like getting married and thinking about divorce at the back of your mind."

I would go for the first option. A simple movement is reliable, easy and cheap for maintenance.
Good brands still have acceptable re-sell value.

i would choose the simple watch but expensive brand as oppose to the other two watches.its like you can buy a bmw 3 series,or a full spec'd toyota camry at similar price point..but for me the 'feel good' factor still lies with the bmw.maybe its just me,but higher/more expensive brands have nicer designs/total package..and minimal brand like the millionsmart tourbillon is of horrible build quality but amazing complication...however,the last option of the tourbillon i dont think i will opt for it because of servicing/parts seems hard for such chinese tourbillons
