Which one would you collect?
« on: January 27, 2011, 11:15:56 AM »
For Patek Philippe lovers, which of these 2 would you rather collect? In the case of limited funds. I know collectors would want both of course.

5712/1A or 5980/1A

i agree to a certain extent, different people different hobby. some rather spend on cars, some rather spend on watches. there's a guy in KL who owns a RM2.7 million 5002J Sky Moon Tourbillon. i told my dad what a crazy guy, and got scolded by him, he said "you say he's crazy, he say you're the crazy one, no money wanna complain"
:Laughing_on_floor:
i don't understand how he make so much money to spend a bungalow plus a car on a watch

5712/1A ..that is just me because i never did like chrono because i can't find the use for a chrono in my daily life and would not really pay for something i do not use.

maybe that would change if i have some spare cash to spare on a PAM 251

All i can say its all up to you... We can give you million advices but you are the one who are going to wear the watch...... Are you wearing it to impress other or for your self satifaction? Buy the one that you feel better wearing it & not because other like it...

I'd go for the Nautilus 5980/1A. I think the previous one is a bit too cluttered for my personal taste.

I think RM50k and above is generally where the top end watches belonged.  You can say is nonsense to you but that's the way it is.  Value for money is another thing.  Likewise, owning a BMW or Merc may also nonsense because generally they cost much more than a Proton and the later can also take you from A to B.

BTW, I like PP 5712/1A better too.

purpose of owning a patek is for self-satisfaction as well as the status is gives. i just want to get some advice from patek experts which of the two is more collectible. of course personally i agree that 5712/1A would be the choice. but who knows, people might think 5980/1A is more worth it since a large amount is gonna be spent already. It's ok to wear either one of them, only issue is which one is a hotter item that most people buy.

ehhh.....  :-\ self satisfaction = yes

but status wise... i am afraid you get better recognition wearing an all out blinged Day-Date than a Patek from the usual crowd. Not that many ppl knows or recognises a Patek unless you're within the WIS crowd.

but gaining status from your belongings is kinda lame if you ask me. The "Asian Superman" Li Ka Shing only wears a Casio digital watch

also both watch are in current and regular production.. don;t really know what do you mean by "how collectible" the watches could be. Buy retail and try to sell it a day later and see how much you could get for it and you'll know how "collectible" the watch is.

Btw, both watches are fantastic watches and if you have the cash..why not. buy it for the right reasons. have the opportunity to caress James' 5711 and the build and refinement is second to none. a beautiful watch   but too bad..i am not "refined" enough to carry it off  :P

terenceterence: understood mate. haha well status as in "shiok sendiri" and like you said among the WIS group. Its a status symbol of character, wealth and prestige isn't it, the "wind" you feel wearing the watch. i agree it's not for showing off of course, don't wanna get arm chopped off as well.

+1. Buy for the right reason.

Talking about brand recognition, had a friend who has a Patek. He is very proud of it, says it shows how he has made it. Sadly the rest, how he lives and does things do not reflect the fact he has made it. Does not go for holidays, eats at home, does not even go out to restaurants, ever, unless someone else pays and borrows ciggies to smoke. Kids don't have a computer at home. Status?

I have handle a Patek and I can say that they do make very very beautiful watches, but it is way out of my price range.

IMHO, PP5980/1A is nicer and the dial is not as cluttered as PP5712/1A. It'll be a simple, dressy/classy sports watch.

A. Lange is another one you should be checking out.

RM50K now is a lot. 10 years from now it may not be much.
The Proton Saga was about rm18k when it was launched. A Rolex GMT at that time probably about rm6k. A Patek was about rm16k.
Look at the prices of cars, rolexes and houses now. Its sort of relative in price inflation except of course your pay packet never really catches up with inflation unless you move up the promotion ladder real fast. Or strike it big somehow. :HammerHead:

@TheHobbit: Hahaha, i'm sure these cases are not common. Maybe a stingy businessman?

As referred by terrenceterrence, tycoon Li Ka Shing wears a Casio when he spends a luxury on other things. Then again, maybe he's stingy in different areas.

Damn, Lange & Sohne seems so popular in KL and Singapore, never encountered one before ever. Their ads do seem attractive tho. To me seems like choosing between a Lexus and a German made luxury car.

@JPSP Hahaha, too many choices isn't it. If anyone has that much funds, i'm sure they'd buy it all. For price ranges way above 50k, i like the AP "Bumble Bee", Rolex White Gold Daytona and these 2 PPs.

FYI: I do not have the kind of money, actually asking about the PP for my dad because he asked me for my opinion. Since PPs catch phrase is "you never actually own a Patek Philippe, you merely look after it for the next generation" i hope to take over to care for it in the future. And of course, one day hopefully, i aim to attain the wealth to own one myself.

Yeah ... the effect of inflation.  The sad thing is when I retire, being a millionaire just means that you are still middle class!

@peanut It's a good thing, meaning our country has achieved their 2020 dream. Cheers for the journey to a high income nation. We'd all be able to afford nice watches.

Mr Li is the status many want to achieve. Being seen with Mr. Li is a form of recognition. So did it matter what watch he wore? :)
