I think for peace of mind, you can do that every 4 - 5 yrs. If you are not afraid, can bring to service when you noice the watch accuracy is really out!

think your mechanical watch as your car. your car need to send to service center when it reached certain mileage. like wise the watch.

Then again, many people in msia do not service their watches. An informed source once told me watch companies just want to make money and that the 5 yr service interval is an overkill.
Having said that, my dad's 25 yo Datejust was never serviced and still runs well

i do agreed ;) Not many ppl will send in their watches for regular service..

the old sub i had was working for 10 years (last check was +1 sec/day... 1 sec gain a day, never been service for 10 yrs), it stop after my krabi trip (i used it in some water-activities) and the service only cost me around MYR860...

I have to admit that rolex is one of the most reliable watches i have so far and i do have confident not to service it every 5 yrs until it stop one day ;p

Or, if you find your watch start running slow until a limit you can't accept, then it's time to send back too ;)

p/s: i only have such a good experience with rolex, as for other brand, it's really depend :p

Collectors i know do not service their watches evry 5 yrs.Their rational is that they rotate among so many watches so much so that wear and tear is minimal hence a service is redundant and a waste of resources which could be channeled to new pieces. However, periodical usage is good which is why i have a winder to keep the juices flowing.

Having said all that,I belong to this group ;)

I wore my Rolex SD almost everyday for 6yrs and only on the 7th year of owning it i sent it in for service.

For me its a piece of mind, to me prevention is best and if you wait for something to go wrong, you might not be so lucky in the cost.

no need to keep spare parts... they keep whole movement
got problem just change the whole movement, fast and cheaper this way! labour cost more expensive actually

What if let say you wore the watch for 1 or 2 years before keeping in safe for next 3-4 years. Do I need to go service again when I wan to wear it again?

Basically u do. The oil in ur watch will degrade with time.

They won't keep the whole mvmt either. For digital watch, the spare part is the mvmt i.e. they dun chg the IC without chng the board.

how long does it take for the watch to be serviced if we send our timepieces back to the manufacturer?a month?

and as far as i know, servicing a movement by a watchmaker should take a day or so..in KL,which shops do u recommend sending a watch to be serviced if we do not want to send back to the original manufacturer?to me its not about the cost, what concerns me is the duration of getting it done

hope u guys can chime in!

Most standard service takes 2-3weeks assuming no major work is needed or backlog of watches are within norms. I would personally be doubtful that a movement servicing takes only 1 day if I were to pay someone hundreds for it. Im in the opinion of letting them have as much time possible so long it is reasonable and job is done to satisfaction.

I will also assume that the watch is serviced locally in Malaysia and based on mechanical movements only and not quartz.

i have a friend who is a watchmaker, sat down with him in his house...service a eta 2824 auto..it took him a good day of servicing it..oiling ,cleaning the bridges etc ..probably his volume of watches to be serviced are low and face no probs :P

Perhaps and that is possible. Just my preference to not have them do it too fast with all the parts involved. Cheers!
